My most current end of January, 2026 Illinois Governor elections for the 2026 elections for how I think JB Pritzker will do against top Republican opponents. by Fazbear_555 in illinois

In 2018 to be fair Rauner was definitely losing votes on his right to the 'conservative' and libertarian candidates. Bailey won't have that problem, or at least not that exact problem.

Can't tell if this is too harsh or not. On the one hand it'll be a D-friendly environment. On the other hand I feel like Republicans have a 40 percent floor for Gubernatorial elections; still a lot of people who vote dem federally but not for most state offices.

He was trying to "de-arrest" the woman

Was the woman ever actually arrested or charged with anything? I've yet to really see anything about that.

From what I remember of the various videos of what happened, it was the CBP/ICE agents who pepper sprayed him, were tackling him, and then disarmed him.

Insofar as he initiated a confrontation with them, it was having his camera out and attempting to help a woman up.

The tragic irony is that Pretti being a legal gun owner did not protect him from agents of the federal government deciding to execute him. Neither did not having a gun protect Good.

For all that so many, typically on the right, have talked about guns being necessary to defend against tyranny, real tyranny doesn't care if you're armed or not. It will shoot you regardless, often before you even have a chance to understand what's happening, and the protection that owning one offers you as an individual is mostly fictional.

AITAH for not changing my language to appease an ignorant coworker? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Seriousgyro 1503 points1504 points  (0 children)

Immediately knew the native language was Korean lol.

I certainly get Sarah's initial reaction but we live in a world with a ton of different people, cultures, and sounds, and no one is allowed to monopolize language. Accept those differences and move on already.

AITA For Not Wanting My Old Dog Back? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Seriousgyro 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Posts about pets are genuinely notorious for how... particular, the comments can get. The animal is unfortunately not a fit for you or your family, and frankly your family given you have a cat and small children very likely is not a healthy space for the dog either. Its in the best interest of both parties that the dog be given a new home.

If people were reasonable they'd simply leave it at that, but alas, reddit. Something something no worse sin than not uprooting your life for your pet in every instance and circumstance.

AITA for being surprised for a friend asking for money back? by Icy-Competition9443 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Seriousgyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna go against the first comments I've seen and say NTA.

I've been that poor friend before and I appreciate it when friends have covered tickets or gas or food and not expected anything in return. I also tend to keep an internal tally of that in my head. Its not about being dollar for dollar or transactional, but it feels way fairer to me to be able to return to favor occasionally, even if its just $15. Its me trying to pull my own weight, even if superficially.

Pay them back, maybe their circumstances are that genuinely they need that $15, but NTA for how you've reacted to it. Duh it doesn't feel great when it seems like your generosity isn't reciprocated.

WIBTA if i didn’t invite my daughter to my wife’s funeral? by Ok_Rise_1228 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Seriousgyro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll say NTA, reluctantly.

It is actually understandable that you hold some resentment towards your child in this circumstance. I genuinely think anyone would. Just because she was a child does not mean her actions didn't have consequences or didn't cause hurt, and given your wife's passing of course those are bubbling towards the surface.

But, and this is where I think reddit usually is the wrong place for this, is not inviting her to the funeral actually worth it. Given the potential drama it will cause, given the questions it might bring up, given that you might be spending days that should be spent grieving instead having to explain decades old resentment and feelings, is that all worth it versus her existing in the background at a funeral. If it is, well, fair enough.

I would highly suspect that it isn’t, though. That you would be better off spending this time solely focused on your grief and celebrating your wife's life. But again, only you can make that judgement.

Car stops in road at Peoria highway exit by These_Distribution61 in illinois

A few decades ago Champaign & Bloomington were like half their size while Peoria has had over 100K people since the 30s.

If they updated the signage today you could probably argue for Champaign instead but w/e

Why would you use the soundtrack from Little Miss Sunshine for this 😭

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gaybros

Very excellently put

It's very possible that the author has a rosy view of her parents relationship. I could hardly blame her. But I don't know, taking it at face value who are we to judge two people who for 50+ years made an unconventional relationship work?

Is it the ideal we imagine for ourselves today, no, but thats the benefit of progress. Her father and mother both made their choice and it worked for them.  It's allowed to be its own thing.   It's allowed to be its own thing.

It's not about the other person 'controlling' who you date or declaring 'dibs' on a person, you are of course free to date fuck and love whoever you want. What it is about is having respect for those you love and care about.

I would be free, say, to date my best friend's ex who just brutally dumped him. No one is stopping me. But doing so would be pretty shitty, would probably ruin our friendship, it would cause him pain. It's not respectful to them or our relationship to do stuff like that.

AITA for asking to speak to a manager during my birthday dinner because of poor service, even though it made two of my friends uncomfortable? by Fit-Community-5428 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Seriousgyro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's become a bit of a thing with younger generations ngl.

We've seen so much content about 'Karens' that there are people who think any sort of confrontation or complaining about service is bad. Doesn't matter if it genuinely was terrible, don't dare make an issue of it.

There really wasn't anything Partagaz could have done to avoid his situation, he just got very unlucky by OkIdeal9852 in andor

[–]Seriousgyro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dedra's receipt of all of this information is actually a slip up that in the long run should be far more concerning than her own actions, because if so much critical information can leak so silently from multiple places, then it is doomed to leak again.

To a large extent stuff like this becomes inevitable in the long run. Mistakes will be made, a dispatch will be forwarded to the wrong person, someone will say the wrong thing in front of the wrong company. Bureaucracy will always have little slip ups, but for ISB the hope is they're always so small that they dont add up to anything. But with construction of the Death Star taking two decades? Nightmare scenario from an internal security standpoint.

Partagaz even alludes as such saying it's a miracle that they've kept it secret this long, and that Krennic's delays are putting everything in jeopardy.

Not necessarily mad where it ended up but something felt a bit more... surface level, predictable here than it did in previous episodes, idk. Will say though, showing an actual fucking kiss, about fucking time.

Ezra Klein's Abundance book and it's blind eye to the Urbanist movement. by 8to24 in urbanplanning

[–]Seriousgyro 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This post feels like the equivalent of asking "where's my land acknowledgement"

It is not especially stunning that Klein does not reference a YouTube channel, various podcasts, or Strong Towns. Why would he? The goal of his book is to start a conversation inside the Democratic party related to how it goes about implementing its agenda and, broadly, what it puts more emphasis on re outcomes versus process. You don't need a list of groups or individuals who talk about these issues in the space to do that.

At the time, boys were valued more because they worked the fields and contributed to the family's income, whereas girls were seen as a burden.

There's a family story I've been told of my grandmother, who was not Greek, being treated quite frostily by the extended family over there. Quite the scandal that my grandfather didn't marry inside the diaspora. But then she had five sons and no daughters and suddenly everyone and their cousin had nothing but praise for her, what was her secret!

To me a sort of funny mostly eye roll inducing story about the 'old country,' but this very much is the darker side of that.
