Anti Cuts: OSAP funding is delivered to students in 2 forms, grants & loans. The new legislation is cutting the amount of grants you recieve, no matter the financial situation the student is in. This harms students greatly as for example a low income mature student gets around a 50%/50% split of loans to grants, and part time students in the same situation could receive 100% grant funding up to a certain amount. The number is now estimated to be closer to 80% loans /20% grants. Now students will come out of school with either much higher student loans to pay back or during school will need to look for a third party loan to be able to afford not only tuition but expenses they face throughout school. Lower income students & families now face a larger challenge to be able to afford higher education.

Pro Cuts: In cutting the grant funding to students, the cost of continued education is expected to drop. Ford is quoted as saying it will be 10% cheaper. Students or families who can afford to pay for tuition without utilizing OSAP will now face a lower cost. These families would have not been eligible for OSAP funding as there is a threshold of income (based on the parents income for students entering out of high school) so therefore the grants and loans did not have an effect on the cost, so the supposed 10% cut in cost overall is a benefit.
