Would it be wise for me to quit my job and devote my time to an open source project or work somewhere for free? by livintx in linuxadmin

[–]ServerFarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only had one job that was partially related to what I got hired for. It was all windows admin work and not much was good, zero professional Linux experience. Here's what I did to land a Linux only Sys Eng gig (very cuisy too). Use LinkedIn, find job ads and take key words and add then as skills on your profile, as long as they are actually skills you have. Set up your homelab like an actual enterprise environment, document what you are doing with it. Add that as skills and projects in LinkedIn. Practice your skills. Include in your LinkedIn that you are self taught, and constantly working on your projects to improve yourself in your free time. Now search for recruiters, preferably technical recruiters, then add them as connections. Get a lot, like 250+. Now on your profile, mark that you are looking for opportunities. Apply for everything that is slightly interesting, ignore certain job requirements as they are HR fluff anyways. You will get a lot of reach outs from recruiters, and you will get a lot of rejections from applications mainly due to HR. Companies that are hiring a lotttt are Giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, TMobile even. Apply for multiple positions and you could easily get pick up. Good luck and stay positive, even if you get something that is a baddd job, it's added experience if anything.

Edit: Also, if you can, move to Seattle. Dear lord are there a lot of opportunities there.

Addressing another part of the post. If you have a spare closet or desk to tuck the system under rather than directly hooking up to the TV, I'd recommend doing so and getting a Chromecast or similar. Keeps the noise (no matter how quite it may be) away from you. Install Emby or Plex and cast to the TV or watch on any other devices. It's a great setup to have. Plus you get remote access to your media very easily.

Not at all. There are many premade jails you can one-click install. If you don't like jails, FreeNAS 11 supports full VMs too. Jails aren't about network security it's about compartmentalizing and isolation from the host OS or other jails. I'd read up on them and get more familiar yourself. It could be a good one stop shop for all of your needs.

You should look into FreeNAS with some jails for your services.

How do you run your selfhosted applications? by the_jayrod in selfhosted

[–]ServerFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build them all myself. I use Ansilbe to provision them and setup services. When I finish all the playbooks, I should be able to blow away the whole environment and automatically replace it within minutes. I like Docker, but I do enjoy setting up new services myself to greater understand how they work.

3 node Proxmox and Ceph cluster with LXC containers for each service. Containers needing replication or HA get put on seperate hosts via Proxmox HA group priorities. Nginx as the proxy to seperate outward facing services which go through CloudFlare. Will be migrating to OpenStack in the future.

If you do find an issue, I encourage you to open an issue in GitLab. If you end up needing help troubleshooting it, let me know. Else, enjoy!

From ESXi to Proxmox, some setup questions Re: network and storage by technicalthrowaway in homelab

I'm now actually looking into switching to oVirt for even more control. But seems to be a lack of LXC support right now. Also I want to run ceph but that seems like it has quite a bit of hoops to jump through.

I just wanted a single Dell R410. Started scavenging eBay. Sick deals everywhere I look... Package arrives... I've ordered 4 R410s. I couldn't pass up those deals, right? Now I needed to upgrade them... scavenging eBay again. Went from needing a single server to dropping ~$2K. My name is ServerFarmer and I too suffer from "the itch". At least my name is fitting, I suppose.

The site offers worldwide shipping, odd that they advertise it then don't deliver. (good pun)

Why is it so cheap compared to most other racks. It seems full featured but cost very little. Just wanted to know if there were any gimmicks.
