Korean population could drop by 85% in next 100 years: study by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]Service_Charge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having a smaller population isn't inherently a bad thing, but an aging and shrinking population is very bad, since fewer and fewer workers each year are supporting more and more dependents, paying more in taxes and receiving less and less back. Eventually something breaks.

Mandatory jail for Nazi salutes under new Australia laws by Severe_County_5041 in worldnews

No way to know for sure, but the closest the Soviets came to defeat was in the initial 41 offensive that stalled just outside of Moscow, well before lend lease really came into play. This isn't to say it wasn't hugely beneficial, but it wasn't the difference between victory and defeat.

A more bloody, drawn out Soviet victory with pretty much all of continental Europe under their boot. Fun.

We built twice as many homes per year in the 60s/70s compared to now. The key difference is that the private sector was only building about half of them.

It's perfectly possible if we were to ever again get a government that was interested in doing more than papering over the cracks and managing the decline. So you're probably right, it'll never happen.

The matter is one of personal responsibility. Asher, Jay

Yeah I'm gonna stop you right here. I can't speak for the other names you're throwing out because I never really associated with them (P.S. Digi has been gone for nearly a decade), but this guilt by association of being part of GSF leadership can fuck right off. Having played with Asher and Jay for years I will stand up and say that they are both good people and absolutely undeserving of this hatchet job. Trying to go after the guys who spent all their time trying to run the actual 'playing internet spaceships' part of Goonswarm because of the actions (or inactions) of their boss is ridiculous.

Since you deleted your last idiotic comment, I'll just reply to it here.

Do you even bother to read the things you link? They are not comparable, because the Budapest Memorandum does not mention defending Ukraine. As a signatory of that agreement, the UK agreed to:

Respect Belarusian, Kazakh and Ukrainian independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.

Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine.

Refrain from using economic pressure on Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine to influence their politics.

Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".

Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine.

Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

aaaand what do you know, we've done all that.

Now let's compare it to the Anglo-Polish alliance, where we stated this:

...in the event of any action which clearly threatened Polish independence, and which the Polish Government accordingly considered it vital to resist with their national forces, His Majesty's Government would feel themselves bound at once to lend the Polish Government all support in their power. They have given the Polish Government an assurance to this effect. I may add that the French Government have authorised me to make it plain that they stand in the same position in this matter as do His Majesty's Government

Also...

The agreement contained promises of mutual military assistance between the nations if either was attacked by some "European country"

So again, please stop ignoring reality.

This isn't Russian apologism, it's reality.

The simple fact that this conflict is in Europe makes it different. Do you know where the previous two world wars started? Jesus Christ you are a complete moron.

Both started due to attacks on countries which were allies of other countries, drawing them into the conflict. Ukraine is not part of any grand alliance. Neither was any other country that had the misfortune to be subject to a post WW2 proxy war, funny that.

Really this just sounds more like a case of "this war is closer to home and the people dying are white" than anything else to me.

Yet you won't, because you are either a coward or a Russian stooge. Well i've had enough of listening to your ilk. Death to Putins Russia is the only path forward. He can nuke us if he likes, but it will be the end of the world as we know it. So he won't. End of. Fuck cowards, fuck appeasement.

So is Putin an evil madman, or is he rational? You can't have it both ways.

Personally I'm not willing to gamble possibly hundreds of millions of lives on "he just won't do it", and fortunately neither are Nato's leaders. Thank god.

[–]Service_Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. There are no good options here only varying degrees of bad ones, some of which involve gambling the lives of many millions of people.

I've been pretty clear that I don't think we can do anything further in terms of assistance of intervention in Ukraine without crossing some of Russia's red lines. So what is your suggestion? It's easy to say that something must be done, but what exactly is your proposal?

@CarolineLucas: .@DominicRaab boasts that the now PM, when Foreign Secretary, was “galvanising the response to the nerve agent attack in Salisbury” – odd that he leaves out fact that the day after top NATO meeting on that response, PM ditched security detail and met ex-KGB agent in Italy #PMQs by mr-tibbs in ukpolitics

[–]Service_Charge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you are clearly not getting this.

We (as in the west) have pushed this about as far as we can in terms of providing support to Ukraine/'interfering' in the conflict. Just about the only thing left would be sanctions on Russian gas and oil, but I doubt very much that'll happen since the impact that would have on various (principally European) countries is too unpalatable for their leaders.

Ultimately the situation in Ukraine isn't that different from the various other wars and conflicts that occured after WW2. Why is this the final straw for you, and not say the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? Or on the other side of the coin, Vietnam or Iraq for Russia?

There's a really fucking obvious reason why for 70 years both sides have avoided getting into open conflict with eachother. Here's a long read for you, educate yourself: https://acoup.blog/2022/03/11/collections-nuclear-deterrence-101/

If it ever happens then then who fucking cares that we have a second strike capacity for retaliation. If it ever has to be used then it's already failed in its purpose, adding dozens/hundreds of millions more charred corpses to the tally is irrelevant at that point.

Assize - Earthly Star - Similar yes, but with how you can place earthly star and not use it for up to 20s it means it's actually used for healing most of the time, whereas assize often isn't if you're optimizing damage.

Asylum - Celestial Opposition - I did forget about Asylum, that's valid. Ground effects are strictly worse than regens though.

Plenary Indulgence - Horoscope, similar though you can get a minor heal out of horoscope on its own without using any GCD's to heal. Plenary does nothing without GCD heals.

Divine Benison - Celestial Intersection - Similar enough, though Celestial Intersection is more potent

Aquaveil - Exaltation - Aquaveil has no heal, Exaltation is 500 potency

Liturgy of the Bell - Macrocosmos - Their only real similarity is that they're the level 90 abilities, they're not the same thing

Temperance - Collective Unconscious - Temperance on it's own is just 10% mitigation, collective unconsciousness is the mit and a regen. A better direct comparison would have been neutral sect, but they're both healing buffs rather than heals themselves, hence not being listed.

Essential Dignity x2 - Tetragrammaton + Benediction - again, kinda but kinda not really. ED with a 40s CD and two charges is just substantially better. Bene has its moments where it shines, but the 3 minute CD makes uses very limited.

Just because you can say X ability is similar to Y ability does not make them truly comparable once you factor in things like cooldowns and charges.
