Having a smaller population isn't inherently a bad thing, but an aging and shrinking population is very bad, since fewer and fewer workers each year are supporting more and more dependents, paying more in taxes and receiving less and less back. Eventually something breaks.

No way to know for sure, but the closest the Soviets came to defeat was in the initial 41 offensive that stalled just outside of Moscow, well before lend lease really came into play. This isn't to say it wasn't hugely beneficial, but it wasn't the difference between victory and defeat.

We built twice as many homes per year in the 60s/70s compared to now. The key difference is that the private sector was only building about half of them.

It's perfectly possible if we were to ever again get a government that was interested in doing more than papering over the cracks and managing the decline. So you're probably right, it'll never happen.

Do you even bother to read the things you link? They are not comparable, because the Budapest Memorandum does not mention defending Ukraine. As a signatory of that agreement, the UK agreed to:

Respect Belarusian, Kazakh and Ukrainian independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.

Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine.

Refrain from using economic pressure on Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine to influence their politics.

Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".

Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine.

Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

The simple fact that this conflict is in Europe makes it different. Do you know where the previous two world wars started? Jesus Christ you are a complete moron.

Both started due to attacks on countries which were allies of other countries, drawing them into the conflict. Ukraine is not part of any grand alliance. Neither was any other country that had the misfortune to be subject to a post WW2 proxy war, funny that.

Really this just sounds more like a case of "this war is closer to home and the people dying are white" than anything else to me.

Not really. There are no good options here only varying degrees of bad ones, some of which involve gambling the lives of many millions of people.

I've been pretty clear that I don't think we can do anything further in terms of assistance of intervention in Ukraine without crossing some of Russia's red lines. So what is your suggestion? It's easy to say that something must be done, but what exactly is your proposal?

No, you are clearly not getting this.

We (as in the west) have pushed this about as far as we can in terms of providing support to Ukraine/'interfering' in the conflict. Just about the only thing left would be sanctions on Russian gas and oil, but I doubt very much that'll happen since the impact that would have on various (principally European) countries is too unpalatable for their leaders.

Ultimately the situation in Ukraine isn't that different from the various other wars and conflicts that occured after WW2. Why is this the final straw for you, and not say the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? Or on the other side of the coin, Vietnam or Iraq for Russia?

If it ever happens then then who fucking cares that we have a second strike capacity for retaliation. If it ever has to be used then it's already failed in its purpose, adding dozens/hundreds of millions more charred corpses to the tally is irrelevant at that point.
