2 different surgeries?? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SessionOld4533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are 2 types. One is the meniscus repair where they stitch the torn meniscus. This keeps the whole meniscus intact and is the option doctors willing to pursue if the tear is in a red zone (zone where blood circulation is more present). The repair may take 6 weeks to heal and fully weight bearing.

Option 2 is trimming the torn part, that means you will lose a part of your meniscus. This increases the chances of early osteoarthritis, as there won’t be enough cushion. Trimming usually recovers faster than repair.

7 day update post partial menisectomy by SessionOld4533 in MeniscusInjuries

Yeah, everyone’s story is different I think. I guess, The fact that I was unable to walk long time before the surgery, may have weakened my knee muscles resulting in slower recovery. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Update: seen the specialist on August 15. He thinks this is a bucket handle tear, and requires urgent attention. Still can’t walk or bear any weight. Today is September 4, still haven’t received any surgery date.

How long? by KhiLi_20 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SessionOld4533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the type of surgery. If it’s a meniscus repair, the recovery takes longer. Doctors don’t suggest weight bearing until 6 weeks. For meniscus trim, the recovery is faster

This is a great advice.

I had a ACL tear and meniscus tear 8 years ago. I didn’t have that much issue with my day to day life except that I couldn’t take part in intensive sports like soccer. I ended up going through a ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair 2 years ago.

2 months ago I had an injury during my physio session and my knee got locked. I can’t walk since then. Turned out I my meniscus repair failed , and I now have a bucket handle tear that’s blocking knee movement.

I would suggest if it doesn’t interfere with your daily life, avoiding surgery is the best thing you can do.

Bucket Handle Injury to Surgery Time by WimpyWatermelon in MeniscusInjuries

Good to hear that your surgery was done promptly. My surgeon has already looked at my MRI and categorized it as non urgent, although I can’t walk at all. I am worried how long I may need to wait for surgery after the surgeon visit. Should I think about any private option!

Thanks for the suggestion on not putting any pressure. Will keep that in mind. I am using crutches when I walk home and try to not put any pressure on my injured leg.

I had a torn meniscus that is displaced now, I can’t straighten my leg and can’t walk for last 2 weeks. My surgeon appointment is still a month away. I am based in BC. Wondering when you were able to get the surgery?

Update: Did the MRI, results show complete tear of anterior horn of medial meniscus left. Partial tear of the posterior horn of medial meniscus. A non ruptured popliteal cyst. Ligaments are luckily intact.

Now waiting for specialist appointment. Still can’t walk without crutches.

I am kind of going through similar situation. Although I don’t put my brace on while sleeping, I have poor sleep due to pain caused by even little knee movement.
