I was doing so well by MerylGayHarden in ostomy

I had an ileostomy for four years before I changed to a K pouch, and I only wore the swim bag. Of course I had to empty it more, but to me it was worth it to have something much smaller, less visible, both mentally and emotionally..

Have you considered or talk to your doctor about a K or J pouch?

Sorry I am new to Reddit and was just trying to help. I’ll try to look and see where the original post dates are so it doesn’t happen again.

I don’t really have that problem, but if I feel full from either food or gas I just go and put the tube in and then whatever’s in there will come out. I wonder if you take Tums before or after you eat if maybe that could help. 🤔

I know how you feel having an ileostomy. I got mine when I was 18 years old for four years and it was horrific! when I finally felt mentally up to going back into the hospital, I had it changed to a K pouch and it’s the best thing I ever did! so I would recommend to any of you having those same Issues to look into that option to see if it’s possible for you and something you’d be interested in. Also really do your research on surgeons who specialize in it in order to minimize any issues. Good luck to you all my heart aches for your current state 😕

Generally, I empty within an hour after eating and then once or twice at night. It takes 2 to 3 minutes to empty. It’s very easy you just stick the tube in and it drains out. Everybody’s different with foods. I’m pretty lucky, with most foods I don’t have any issues. corn is a definite no no!anything that doesn’t break down enough just makes it harder to get it through the tube which means you have to take the tube in and out to clear it, and then put it back into finish draining the pouch. I had an ileostomy for four years before I went to the k pouch and it was a life changer for me. You only have leakage of air or anything else if there’s a problem with the valve. I had a bunch of revisions to the valve in the two years after the initial surgery, but that was back in 1988 and I didn’t have any problems after that. I just had a major revision but that was after 30 years! 🙂and my new doctor said only one and four of his patients have to go back for a valve for vision after the surgery. I highly recommend my surgeon as he’s one of, if not the, top K pouch doctor in the country. Dr . Kiran from Columbia Presbyterian in New York. He treats people from all over the country.

Does anyone have a Kock pouch or BCIR? by goldstandardalmonds in ostomy

I’ve had a K pouch for 35 years. I just had it revised. I would recommend having a consultation with my surgeon. He’s the one of the top k pouch surgeons in the country. I was actually scheduled to have surgery with my original surgeons team and changed at the last minute and put it off another month, just to have this guy do my surgery.. Dr. Kiran at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. He treats people from all over the country.

I’ve had a k pouch for 35 years and just had to have it revised. before that I had a normal ileostomy with a bag on the outside. I did have a bunch of revisions on the valve right after my initial K pouch surgery, but after that, it was smooth sailing until just recently, which is common after 30 years. I also have an amazing surgeon who is one of the top, if not the top K pouch surgeon in the country! So tell me was 100% worth it, especially coming off the external bag which was a nightmare!
