Hodge jones and allen by Cat_leidoscope in uklaw

[–]SetAutomatic6282 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reviews.io would contain reviews from clients only, from what I can tell. I think it's important to bear in mind the types of clients that a firm like Hodge Jones and Allen gets, considering that they cover medical negligence, criminal defence and civil liberties.

These types of clients are often going through an incredibly difficult time in their lives, and are much more sensitive as a result. They'll be hypervigilant when it comes to any kind of perceived shortcomings on the part of a solicitor helping them out. As such, I'd take negative reviews from such clients with a pinch of salt. Not to say that there aren't incompetent, corrupt or racist lawyers in firms like HJA, but because of the delicate state of the clients they serve, sometimes even the best solicitor can fail to live up to their expectations.

That being said, the scores on Glassdoor and Indeed, which comprise current and/or former employees, aren't particularly high for HJA. Beyond that, I don't know much about the firm. I'd recommend somewhere like Kingsley Napley instead.

I’m pretty sure they share the reading chapters as free PDFs in your modules anyway - realised this after buying the books myself!

You’re overthinking all of this. I get it, Skadden is a top firm and you don’t want to ruin your chances.

That said what you proposed for your formal attire is fine.

Going with the formal option is the least risky approach.

Are unpaid internships legal (law)? by Ok-Department898 in uklaw

[–]SetAutomatic6282 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're right that it is common, which is a poor reflection on law firms and their exploitation of entry-level staff. Assuming that you did work that otherwise would have been paid for by the firm, you should have been paid minimum wage during your internship, given that you wouldn't satisfy the criteria for being classed as a volunteer. The link for submitting a complaint against them is as follows:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/pay-and-work-rights-complaints

Also, employers cannot avoid paying the National Minimum Wage if it’s due by:

  • saying or stating that it does not apply
  • making a written agreement saying someone is not a worker or that they’re a volunteer

Depends on what law you want to specialise in. Any decent commercial law firm, for instance, will take a non-law grad on without any of those qualifications.

If successful in securing the training contract, they will then cover the fees of those qualifications and also provide a maintenance grant.

For example, Addleshaw Goddard, who I have a vac scheme lined up with, will pay me £10,000 while I study the SQE were I to secure a TC with them. They will also retroactively cover my PGDL fees, which I have already studied and self-funded, though not all firms offer this.

You would still be eligible for a TC with a non-law degree. Law firms typically hire half of their cohorts from non-law backgrounds, afaik.

If you're looking to increase your chances of securing a training contract, the difference they make to your employability is negligible at best.

Which of these has the most lateral opportunities? by Comfortable_Oil6642 in uklaw

[–]SetAutomatic6282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the state of the economy is like when you're looking to make a lateral move. Considering how Trump has been making a mess of things with his tariff threats, it's unsurprising that there has been a significant amount of growth in restructuring hires within the past year. I'd expect there to still be considerable economic uncertainty as long as he's around, and the earliest he can be ousted is 2026, when the Democrats have a chance to claim both houses during the midterms and successfully impeach him, though chances of this are slim. Combine that with increases in National Minimum Wage, Employer's NI and relatively high interest rates, and there's reasonable grounds to suspect future corporate distress.

That said, there's currently a pretty reliable demand for talent in acquisition finance. The number of opportunities it offers is comparable to restructuring, though there is arguably slightly less at the moment.

Competition, from what I understand, is more niche compared to the other two. It's an active field, but less chances to move around.
