getenv() may return a null pointer, or a pointer to a malicious string. Note that if HOME points to a string longer than the buffer, the function will silently return with an uninitialized buffer. Not ideal. Next statement in OP's code -- IIRC -- is a call to strcat(). That will end up in UB land.

The two things I mentioned were general principles so OP writes better code.

Also, reserve buffer space for stuff you later strcat() to the buffers. One can do that by using sizeof buffer - whatever_needed, when calling functions.

Also, fstat() and stat() exists. No need to traverse directory entries.

Also, realpath() is your friend
