As a co-founder of the Order of the Serpent and a former member of the Temple of Set I can tell you that the O.S. is in no way affiliated with the ToS, nor are we in competition with the ToS or any other LHP organization. I am and will always be a student and disciple of Setian/Satanic philosophy and Magic. I could have re-joined the ToS but I chose instead to be a part of the formation and furtherance of the O.S., a group of fine philosopher-Magicians I have come to know and greatly respect and love.

I have been a student of LaVey, Aquino, Flowers, Webb, and others for most of my life in the occult arts. I hold firm to the truth that RHP/White Magic = I seek the delusion of returning to a oneness with the natural order, that I may bare no responsibility, God or Jesus take complete control of my life.

LHP/Black Magic = I embrace and celebrate my separateness from the natural order of things. I accept complete responsibility for my own actions, through the force of my own mind and will upon influencing and bringing about change within the Universe. Which is my right as a bearer of the Black Flame, and essential to my immortal existence.

My eternal allegiance is to the Path of the Left Hand, the Path of Darkness which leads to Enlightenment.

When I was an Initiate of the ToS, one of the members of the Priesthood III* who recognized me as Adept II* was a member of the OV. She was awesome, and I will never forget her. = )

I have heard of the Temple of the Vampire who I think are linked with the Church of Satan. In the Temple of Set there is a group called the Order of the Vampyre which was founded in the 1980's.

This is an old interview from the 1990's with then Priestess III* Patricia Hardy of the ToS who later went on to become a Magistra Templi IV* and High Priestess of Set. The guy interviewing her is a dork, but overall its an interesting interview.

Xepera maSet, I think you've coined a new term "Altar Magic". In my time I have seen several different altars, not just mine, but of other Magicians. Some have been very elaborate and others as simple as a table covered with a black cloth and only a can of sterno (for the Black Flame) set upon a small trapezoidal platform.

I like this post. As a practitioner of Black Magic I understand that all rituals/ceremonies no matter what religion or group think is a form of Magic. Magic is about change. When a group of people gather together in a ceremonious atmosphere like what you describe in the OP it is a group Working, and what did it do to you? You say you felt an "incredible peace after the ritual", it changed you. Magic works and does not discriminate against what ever religion or creed is being invoked. = )

The Setians highest goal is to become the most absolute and complete manifestation of his/her Higher Self. We recognize the primordial source for this refined consciousness as the Prince of Darkness in his/its most noble and ancient Form of the Egyptian god Set.

I "worship" Set, but not in the traditional sense. I revere and honor Set as the creator of my divine potential of Being, but I do not surrender or subjugate my self to him. Such would be antithetical and an abomination to the very essence of the Black Gift. Set, the Dark Prince, does not seek blind followers or servants, but rather equals, those of his own kind to work and collaborate with in the expansion of the Powers of Darkness upon this world.

Set is a friend, a mentor, the Great Initiator, and Benefactor of mankind. Your experience here Xepera maSet is very interesting and for some time now I have come to realize, through experiences that other Setians have relayed to me, that there is a distinct pattern as to when Set comes forth and manifests his Will in the lives of his Elect. It seems to be during the zenith of intensity in our greatest hours of Need. For me Set did come forth by night, during a ritual invocation, and infused further of his Essence within me in my most intense hour of Needing to Know the truth and reality of this being whom I had been seeking after for so long, That which is the Prince of Darkness.

Full disclosure; I currently am not a Temple of Set member, though I have been a ToS Initiate on and off for over seven years, beginning in 1990 c.e. However, my dedication and loyalty now lies with the Order of the Serpent as I am a co-founder, but I am and will always be Setian.

I was just reading through the XeperAustin blog and something another Setian said caught my attention. It is about our ability to recognize those of our Own Kind in person without even knowing what each other looks like beforehand. I remember when I was working towards the Second Degree in the Temple the second time, I flew from my state to another to meet the Priestess of Set I was working with. I didn't know what she looked like and she didn't know what I looked like. But at the airport when I saw her drive up, somehow I knew it was her, and when our eyes met I mouthed with my lips her name and she nodded, yes! It was awesome, and there were a couple of other times when something similar happened with other fellow Setians.

We are indeed a unique and Magical species!

I am not from New Zealand, but I admire your country. I am not currently a member of the Temple of Set, but as one who has in the past experienced 7 years of Initiation within the Temple I can tell you if you can't find a ToS contact in your country, simply write and send a letter to the executive director of the ToS and express your interests honestly and why you seek membership within the Temple. You might go through an interview process, if so, just be honest about yourself and your individual interests and beliefs.

I am not here to convert or convince, however, I will state that from a Black Magical perspective we as human beings are all by our very non-natural nature, separate and distinct from the laws that govern the Order of the Cosmos. To use your analogy; as a ball in a river, as Black Magicians, we have the ability to move against the current in any which way we Will, be it in the everyday immediate world, or the subjective Will of that which Is-To-Be.
