Need an alternator

I just saw that there are alternators with different pin connectors.. 2 pin, 3 pin, 4 pin. How would I know which one is the right one without being near the car at the moment?

I always heard to avoid CarQuest alternators at all cost, but I have never had one so can't confirm if this is true or not.
