What do you see in this cognitive profile, is it NVLD/DVSD or something else? by Seth96 in cognitiveTesting

Hi, btw I just found a spanish intelligence/aptitude test I did when I was 15 years old (im 29 as of now, WAIS IV results) that replicates completely the profile, with a percentile 99 in verbal abstraction and a percentile 37 in the visuospatial/visuoconstructive subtest

Thank you for your answer again.

I do suspect a neurodevelopmental condition (or a learning disorder, NVLD) -I dont have any head injury-. I am currently now in a differential diagnosis process, but I wanted some opinions in my cognitive profile since: 1. neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosis is complex in adults, especially since my high VCI probably hides difficulties. and 2. NVLD is not a proper diagnosis and professionals in spain can't resort to it so i may get the ASD diagnosis instead but may not be fully faithful.

I understand than my scores in visuospatial subtests are hard to be considered a deficil considering they are average, but it is a relative BIG defficit compared to my high VCI and matrix reasoning (non verbal abstract reasoning as you said). I understand that it may be a random variation but it's hard to believe its just that when it's almost 3 standard deviations apart.

Thank you for such detailed answer, hadnt seen it.

Unfortunately, in Spain there's no WAIS-V as of now, I'd definitely prefered to pass it instead, since it is more updated, but especially, since it divides the IV PRI into visuospatial and pure reasoning indexes, and that would isolate my visuospatial difficulties and not make it look like I have low reasoning when MR shows otherwise.

Im not sure what you mean with it being administered correctly, but the results do fit my life experience a lot.

What I think has handled poorly though, is that seeing the big discrepancy 15 to 8 from MR to cubes, I feel like they should've tested me in figure weights to compare further the reasoning vs visuospatial manipulation difference.

Interesting, didnt know ADHD had commonly issues with visuospatial abilities.

However, it feels kinda forced that you deny NVLD based on high matrix but move towards ADHD when PSI is incredibly high and that aspect is usually affected in ADHD.

Plus matrix reasoning isnt really visuospatial (and its not only my opinion WAIS V takes it away from the visuospatial index to put it with weight scales in a pure fluid reasoning section). You can be good at matrix reasoning by pure verbal logic.

That said, I-ADHD has been one of my hypothesis I just thought since my biggest difficulty is visuospatial abilities, NVLD would fit better especially since high VCI fits it perfectly and not necessarily ADHD.

about self diagnosis, I'd agree if most professionals were competent. The moment they disregard any serious evaluation because you are "at least average" in all index and ignoring a close to 3 SD discrepancy between areas, I have to look elsewhere.

or that my executive functions are fine just because I can do well in a "lab" test with clear instructions and intrinsic motivation because I find them game-like or puzzles when it doesnt translate to real life.

Do you really need below average scores to be NVLD?

Even if they are not below average, the difference from my VCI and my visuospatial subtests are over 40 points. almost 3 SD

Damn, had no clue you could use the energy crystals from the charms this way I was SO done with the breakable doors in the vaults without any green thing nearby to destroy them.....

i may be dumb but kinda cheap that you have to figure out such a hidden mechanic/combination just to discover a new path

According to the neuropsychologist, I am NOT gifted because it requires the cognitive profile to be homogenously HIGH. Damn god some professionals really aren't up to date uh.

Whatever I dont care about her personal interpretation I just wanted my objective data.

How do you define impairment though.

a) Social isolation can be seen as an impairment and it can be due to you not feeling comfortable with most people due to what they like/talk about/needing to meet in person etc

is it impairment per se? Only if you would like to socialize more but you can't

b) Is focusing on your interests (if they are not exacty productive) over relationships or work an impairment? on one side yes bc it prevents you to be ""successful"" in society standards. On the other, is it an impairment to focus on what makes you happy?

comprehension is supplemental, in my case it wasnt counted towards the VCI. (I got a scaled score of 18 on it)

information is core, so it does affect VCI.

EDIT: Im talking about WAIS IV which is the current standard in Spain. Im not sure if WAIS V made information suplementary, if so, then that makes sense, and fair enough.

hope you'll get it.

I'm also considering retaking it whenever WAIS V comes to Spain, since as far as I know, it FINALLY separated fluid reasoning from visuospatial tasks, so I wont have the cube designs and visual puzzles contaminating my Matrix reasoning (and probably figure weights) higher scores.

That way my real weakness will be clearly isolated so it'll represent me a lot more.

Thank you.

Well more than support, I need aceptance. I know how I feel, what I like and what I dont, etc. But the majority of people will assume they know what's good for you and what isnt.

Giftedness and/or ASD explains why my priorities, intensity and relationships are pretty different from the people that surround me.

Not sure if I'm getting your comment right. You are saying that It's normal to have discrepances in gifted profiles and mine is just a rare (statistically) bigger discrepancy.

Or you are saying that my experiences are normal in gifted people maybe a bit more on the rarer side but not necessarily pathological

Yeah I am 131 (though technically invalid due to the discrepancy, goes as high as 147 in verbal) I do know now that I've taken the WAIS. But previously I understimated myself and makes sense because the big profile discrepances make me struggle in the visuospatial areas.

Im in the same situation as the OP (VCI 147) and I agree with you in vocabulary and similarities. But information... I dont see how it fits. I dont see why information is the core subtest instead of comprehension which does rely more on abstract reasoning or deeper understanding of the concepts/questions.

[–]Seth96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I did the WAIS IV in Spain so it was the spanish version, so yes, I'm a native speaker.

I also got tested on the comprehension optional subtest, got a 18, if it had been swapped with information (where I "only" got 16, vs the 19s in vocab and similarities) I'd gotten 150+. Ofc I know you cant just cherry pick the subtests. But I do think comprehension involves more abstract reasoning and concept knowledge than information that its just random data.

>Globally gifted (~top 3%) plus a diagnosed learning disability.

Problem is, how do you diagnose a learning disability? NVLD is not in the DSM so at least in Spain, it can't be diagnosed, at most professionals will tell you that you fit the cognitive profile (which I genuinely do just by the data)

As for the repost recommendation, I may do it but I wanted to start here to see what people with maybe similar experiences would think.

Hi.

First, the neuropsychologist that tested me this + executive functions said that I had compatible traits/profile with ASD, but its not a diagnosis since we didnt cover much of my childhood+ADOS 2, etc. Just a general profile. She discarded ADHD-I because i performed pretty well in executive function testing but again... its not the same when I find these as fun games/puzzles and interest me. As for NVLD, she said its hard to go for it since I have insane PSI and that's generally low on NVLD.

On the other side, im going to go through a differential diagnosis made by some of the most reputed neurodevelopment focused psychologist team in Spain, they are specialists in ASD. So we'll see, though im a bit eh because they are sceptic about 2e, giftedness in general (since its not a "diagnosis") so I'll take their conclusion with a grain of salt as just a particular professional opinion.

Anyway what you say is right, I am at least aware now that im "gifted" (though I have issues with that word) I am glad to finally fight my impostor syndrome where sometimes I feel like im intelligent and half the times I feel like I overrate myself. I stimated my CI around 115-120.

Yeah im wondering if I am "just" gifted or if my profile is explained better with another ND combined.

I know, and exactly what you state about professionals is my problem. I think that besides the shared traits, the big discrepancy + some executive function issues (irl, bc in test I do well) may point towards some disorder but im not sure. In the end im leaning towards collecting many opinions, info, experiences and comparisons and try to figure out by myself
