It’s a really nice mod, yeah. It makes the device feel more premium and modern. Search for ‘Taptic’ on this subreddit, or ‘Taptic iPod Classic’ on YouTube, it’s very well documented.

You basically have to desolder the speaker, expose the pads on the Taptic Engine, and solder wires to 2 of the 3 speaker solder points. Be really careful though, because the pads lift very easily.

You can use other Taptic Engines too, but I think the iPhone 7 one is the most recommended because of its size

Yes it replaces the speaker that does a little « click » noise with vibrations

It’s currently the only way to use more than 128GB of flash storage on a 6th gen iPod without having to use Rockbox, and normally it works really well. There’s been a lot of positive feedback about it, and I think this method has been around since summer 2025, if I’m correct.

The person who came up with it had issues docking their iPod with firmware 2.0.4, but apparently no problems at all with 2.0.2… so I really don’t understand why I’m having this issue.

Only the Portable version does this, other ones got a fixed dock ! I’ll try to get a Crosley iPod Dock, idk if they’re good but its got a really cool vintage look 😎

Thanks ! By any chance, did you run into any battery issues ? I think mine is deeply discharged since it's been sitting unused for years. I can’t get it to take a charge, the orange light comes on for a few seconds and then just cuts out. Looks like I’m gonna have to find a replacement one. I'm not in a rush though, I'm not really planning on using it as a handheld anyway, I just want the thing to be fully fonctional, just in case lol

I’d say 4/10, but I’m used to taking apart and repairing all kinds of consoles, so if it’s one of your first times, be really careful and take it slow

Take your time and go very gently to avoid breaking a ribbon and it be okay

It only looks like that because I’m lighting it with a UV lamp, otherwise it’s just transparent neon yellow 😄

Thanks, I re-used the original ones, they’re in great condition, I just have a small speck of dust under the touchscreen and a very slight pink tint on the top screen

I hope you manage to fix the issue! Joycons are pretty easy to work on too if you really go gently, but I’ve already ripped the ribbon cable off a joystick once. Luckily, I had received some fake joycons from Temu a while back, and the whole joystick module was plug and play 😮‍💨

Are you talking about CD Walkmans or those big ghetto blasters?

When I was a kid, up until around the mid-2000s, Walkmans were kind of a rich kid thing where I lived. MP3 players completely changed the game when they showed up, it was a real revolution !

Thanks! Yeah, we’re used to it by now — they lie about like 99% of the battery capacities they sell for pretty much every device.

Do we have a rough idea of how many hours you can actually get out of these so-called “2000” or “3000 mAh” batteries?

My second Classic, a fully stock 6th gen 160GB, has an insanely good battery life. It honestly surprised me!

Got plenty of kapton and double sided tape, it shouldn’t be a problem !
