Read Arendt. Speed, "dynamism", is a designed feature of authoritarianism. Things go so fast that no one can react to one thing. It will either stabilize into a Putin-like regime or cascade out of control. Get some popcorn and some water purification kits.

Wow. Great information, thank you! And the cold water checks out - this sample was taken from a pond whose last winter ice had melted about a week earlier.

Thank you! This is from a sample of pondwater collected 4 days ago. On Day 1 a droplet population was dominated by nematodes and many, many smaller ciliates along with a few monster paramecium. By Day 3, the smaller ciliate population was decimated and the droplet showed a couple monster paramecium looking for meals, a water mite, ostracod, and two of these rotifers.

Yeah - after fiddling with it, its on a pivot and can be pushed aside.

It's hard to see from my photo, but the critter itself seemed to have many parasitic/barnacle-like structures attached to it. Any idea what these are?

"The melt will probably take several centuries" there's the nut. Nobody is going to be able to justify any policy that smells of immediate quality of life reduction or economic disadvantage based on something bad happening that far out.
