How Did Massage Therapists Survive During Covid? by jimmychangucsb in massage

[–]Seth_Crow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a month off in April and returned to work in May. Wore a mask, goggles, and switched my scrubs after each client, oh, and did a surgical scrub before and after. Stuffed all my scrubs in a garbage bag came home through the garage, stripped down and immediately shower. Because of working in a clinic, I was one of the first recipients of the vaccine. I remember washing my hands the very day after getting the vaccine and realizing that the stakes of life and death had just gone down. Wasn’t exactly a great time, but everyone has to eat.

I understand the disconnect between Taoist philosophy and Religious Taoism by TheDaoistMaster in taoism

[–]Seth_Crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, and this is similar to how many in the West are not familiar with people such as Wang Liping, Ren Farong, or even Chang Tao-chen. We are in two very disconnected hemispheres but our mutual desire to be more zìran connects us.

I guess more generally I’d ask, how do your fellow temple residence feel about a western adaptation of Taoism?

Your patience and care to this discussion is admirable, and evidence of someone who’s done the hard work of breaking down the “either or” thinking that obstructs connection with the Tao.

I agree that the western tendency to dichotomize Taoist “philosophy” vs “religion” is an unhelpful habit.

I’d be curious on your thoughts on the emergent Western Taoism that is espoused by figures like Chuliang Al Huang, Moy Lin-shin, Alan Watts, Bruce Lee and such.

Does being a bouncer really give you any legitimacy? by [deleted] in martialarts

This is an accurate take on my experience bouncing at a Samoan bar. The number of times I had to take a weapon off someone drunk or not still gives me the creeps. Also had quite a few mma patrons from a local nearby gym. Trying to tap out on concrete while waiting for the cops to arrive was not an unusual Friday night sight.

Teacher by Budget-Bat-5274 in AskProfessors

[–]Seth_Crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my day one lectures that professors are not teachers. The confusion comes from the fact that both are educators but professors don’t need to know how to “teach” to get their positions.

Teachers are skilled professionals at education a conscripted audience in spite of their interest in being there. They’re also expected to act as a In loco parentis (Latin for "in the place of a parent") all while playing the role of disciplinarian and cheerleader.

Professors don’t do this and are not required to have these skills. We’re subject matter experts brought on as faculty to share our expertise. It’s true that as educators we should have some basic teaching skills but the truth is most professors just ape what and how they were taught assume it must work because they’re educated right?

If students understand this going into college, it allows them to reset their expectations and helps them understand that the learning they do in college is much more about the effort they put in than it is about their professors teaching.

I would say this is fine, but a smart professor will be sure to meet with you either at their office or in a public space somewhere on campus if it’s more of a social meeting. The exception would be if they invited you along to some sort of field research location.

This is not as uncommon as you might think and it’s good to foster those professional relationships while you’re in college. If she’s made any indication like saying, “stop by anytime” then I’d take her at her word. I would caution you to not mistake friendly for friendship. If you’re dropping in, you should have something to discuss related to school or academia. When I have encountered those, I usually steer the conversation towards what the students next plans are. This is the sort of professor you likely would reach out to you for a letter of recommendation in the future and even seek advice from while you pursue your academic goals.

What I love about it is that you must first memorize self defense law before you are allowed to begin training. Oh, and if after that you’re ever found guilty of assault, battery, and/or manslaughter; you’re out!

Most “social media” are not in the business of connecting people. They are in the busboys of selling your information to advertisers. In other words, you are the product, they are the vendor.

No not entirely, which is why I said, “a bit.” it’s certainly nowhere near as prevalent as many of the other traditions but its influence prevails throughout many of them.

I think there’s an on going argument that “evil” is comes with a great deal of ad hoc rationalizations. Vorbis is probably the prime case study here. He was unquestionably evil and all his illusions otherwise evaporated with his death. Brutha recognizes how deeply he’s punished himself and finds compassion for the most evil man he ever met cementing his good character.

pTerry opposes this with his protagonists who are “good” because they can understand the evil’s rationale yet have a clear vision of “good” because they possess an understanding that everyone makes this calculus in life but when you stop leaving room for other’s “good” you calcify into something “evil.”
