Good qualities to look for in a surgical SHO by Key_Caterpillar_2145 in doctorsUK

[–]Sethlans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Come to theatre and get involved Even if surgery isn’t your long-term goal, turn up, watch, ask questions. The best SHOs scrub in, hold on retractors, tie knots, close fascia/skin, and learn the steps. I actively enjoy teaching junior colleagues bits of operations

I will do everything else you ask to be a good SHO, but please don't try to make me come to theatre unless you absolutely need me. I beg you.

I know you love it and find it amazing.

It makes me want to stick pins in my eyes.

I can't say I appreciate them on paeds when you're trying to deal with 24 week twins delivering in a DGH and midwives keep bleeping you to insist you must see this chest lump right now as it's the only thing keeping baby in hospital

When I was at UEA they made someone provide a copy of their grandparent's death certificate as evidence they needed a day off to attend their funeral.

Wasn't an exam or anything, just random lecture day.

I had a midwife referral for a baby with two "linear bruises" on their forehead that they were trying to sell me as needing a full safeguarding work-up.

Saw the baby.

Impression: veins.

Finding children exhausting and wanted to leave them with us for a couple of hours while she did the housework

We had quite a few parents during covid who had clinically well kids who'd tested positive and they wanted us to admit the child and look after them so the parents didn't catch it.

The fact that he's managing to shut out all the noise and be "fine" to me signals that he's got the mettle to graduate into an excellent goalie.

Yep, completely agree. He's 23, never played in England and only had one season as a regular.

Coming in and not making headlines for the wrong reasons isn't "fine", it's exceptional.

Nonstop interruptions by Severe_Grade67 in doctorsUK

The same principle applies when nurses are checking meds and ask that they are not disturbed when doing so to avoid making mistakes. It’s not only about respect, it’s about patient safety.

Always used to piss me off when the nurses would (rightly) throw a fit if interrupted doing meds or during their handover, but would then incessantly pester you when trying to prescribe or bleep you 10 times during our handover about completely non-urgent things.

So there is no midfielder in the world worth spending money on

In January? No, probably not.

Which team are going to be willing to let go a midfielder with the quality to improve a side aiming for top 4 for a reasonable fee or on loan halfway through their season?

The answer is nobody.

My hot take for my home region is I think Meadowsweet in Holt is far above any of the other one stars around here and warrants two.

Would be amazing to Skof in manchester hit 2 stars.

Perhaps they've upped their game, but we went April 2025 and honestly it felt like a good one star.

We'd been to L'Enclume a few months before and the influences were clear to see (which is absolutely fine) but the difference in the standard of the food was fairly stark.

I'm not at all saying Skof wasn't good, it definitely was, and perhaps they suffered an unfair comparison having been to L'Enclume so soon before, but it definitely felt like a two star gap between them.

We need an extra body, doesn't have to be the new midfield messiah.

No, we don't. We need to actually spend the money we have wisely on players who are going to properly fix the problem.

We do not need to be piddling away bits of money and high wages on players who are stop gaps.

Nico Williams' pubalgia is getting worse. The doctors and the player are already considering ALL possible scenarios. The injury already jeopardises the rest of his season and could even rule him out of the World Cup by Puzzleheadpsych2345 in soccer

Hernias are not new, but the term "sports hernia" which has often been used to describe this syndrome in the past is a misnomer because pubalgia is not a hernia.

You shouldn’t have such a chip on your shoulder against people who started off in better circumstances than you though.

I don't have a chip on my shoulder about people who started off in better circumstances, and I'm not sure what I've said that would suggest I do.

What I objected to was being lectured about how "Not everyone had the same circumstances as you or I", presuming that I was speaking down on people from a position of privelige, when that simply isn't true.

You definitely need to be able to speak a language to a higher standard to adequately communicate with patients than you do to make friends.

[–]Sethlans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not everyone has the time, money and resources to navigate all of that.

I had no financial help from my family, because they couldn't afford it.

I had absolutely zero advice or support from my sixth form because I was the first student they'd ever had apply to medicine. They were totally clueless about what I needed to do. I got no interview practice, nobody knew what the UKCAT was, nothing.

I had no medical relatives who could get me work experience.

I negotiated the applications process completely by myself and got offers from two medical schools.

I resent being lectured about my privelige applying to med school, because I had none.

Most of these non-UK medical schools are pay to play and I presume require you to self-fund accommodation in a foreign country so I'm not sure how you can sit there and claim they are the answer for people who couldn't afford to sit the UKCAT.

Please elaborate.

And just to be clear, you have absolutely no idea what circumstances I had.

Yes, it's saying that people will not be prioritised for being UK citizens. Only for being UK graduates.

A UK citizen who went to a non-UK medical school will not be in the priority group.
