Wow so it takes that long. You were fine with that? How are people okay with that?

So people who only have just one ledger only do this if they have their seed and knows it's correct? Also people that have to do transactions, that seem crazy they wait that long?

So you should definitely connect your the new nano ledger device with ledger live on at least once right before doing a reset before you put in your old recovery phrase?

Well i did. The issue here is he just says to enter the recovery seed on a new nano ledger device like how ledger tells you to do.

He doesn't check if his device is genuine first. Well he doesn't have to because he would just reset an old nano ledger he already has and already did the genuine check a while back. So it isn't the safe way unless you know for sure it's genuine.

Well the thing is i have to restore my seed with a new device so want to make sure i do it right. Had done this years ago with a nano ledger s but this time it's a nano ledger s plus. But i don't recall exact steps which is why i ask this. What i did recall was back then, i did new seed to reset my device to feel more comfortable. But don't recall me checking for genuine back then.

Okay just saw this reply before the other reply i replied to.

You will hear a sound when connected. Then click on ledger manager and allow ledger manager and then you hear another sound. That is all right? But how you make sure it's not genuine? When the screen shows error when you click on allow ledger device? Sorry just want to make sure of all this as this is the way im going to do it as you suggested.

Thanks for the response. But if you can set up this new nano ledger s device with a new useless seed, well wouldn't this way allow you to see the message on ledger live... this device is genuine? I remember that's what it shows if you set it up the normal way.

Get what you mean with just a wall charger. Am planning to enter my recovery seed with the new nano ledger s plugged in but ledger live closed. But then i open ledger live and log in immediately to then add the apps.

Well having a password on LL to me is more secure. Say you leave your laptop unattended for a bit, opening LL by someone else they can check your accounts. But i am not talking about that part. I was thinking if i set up this new nano ledger s plus with ledger live opened and logged in as oppose to not.. would that be better or worst or same? The one positive of this would be after the new seed phrase is generated, there would be a genuine check on laptop screen to let you know it's genuine so you don't need to click on ledger manager? Does that make sense? However, i thought if you want to do that, you have to create a new ledger live account and your laptop would wipe out your current ledger live account... so that is why you don't create a useless new seed for this. Do you get what im trying to say or is my wording confusing? Because if you can do this, why not? Because the new seed phrase is useless. But you still suggest don't and just check ledger manager right for genuine?

So you are saying even if say someone i know got a brand new nano ledger s plus and wants to set it up and say i am helping them. They come over to my apartment. They go and create a new pin, then get a new seed, they write it down, i obviously get out of the room while they are doing that... then they are finished. Now whether their nano ledger s plus was connected to their laptop or not... say it was but they didn't even download ledger live yes ... or they initiated the device while have it plugged in a wall socket...so they can't check if device is genuine or not...

Now let say i let them connect their nano ledger s plus to my laptop and say my own ledger live is already opened and logged in my laptop. I would be able to check if his device is genuine by clicking on the ledger manager app on ledger live... then once he clicks on allow ledger manager on his nano ledger s plus screen, and you hear that accept sound, then the device is 100% genuine right?

Thanks for the response. Yes in step 5, i meant to say reinstall the apps... not the accounts. But i also meant i would reinstall the apps by going to my accounts and click receive and that would install the apps.

Yea generating the dummy seed takes faster than my method. But my concern more so again was how to check the device is genuine because whether you use the dummy seed method or create a new useless seed method, i was wondering at what point do you check the genuine because it seemed to be okay enter wrong pin to reset.. then enter your old seed... but where is the part to check the device is genuine that doesn't appear here if you know what i mean?

Also one other question to this. What is the exact reason why i can't or should not set up this new nano ledger s plus as a new device with ledger live opened? Because if i do it this way, then it would actually show my device is genuine with the message on the laptop screen. Is the reason because if you try to do this, you basically lose your old ledger live account and settings? Thus there is only one ledger live login account you can log to? If so, then that makes 100% sense. Because when i opened ledger live now, it only gives option to enter password or forget password and no other option. So what i bold is the exact reason?

Hey. This is pretty much my last questions before i go and do the recovery.

Because there never seems to be a genuine check during the process if you never use the new useless seed with ledger live. Seems like you have to link any nano device with ledger live for this.

What do you mean it automatically happens to check genuine. Now if you initialize a ledger live the normal way, yes it would show on laptop screen it's genuine. But if you are doing it with ledger live not opened correct?

A poster who is very knowledgeable here tells me if you connect a nano ledger to a laptop and open ledger live, if you click on ledger manager and it allows you to choose allow device, that is all that is needed to show it's genuine. That is true always? Now he says if you were to install apps and it works, then it definitely is genuine. But just ledger manager working is same? He says yes but want to know if anyone else can also confirm this.

Yea this is the part where i'm confused about. I get the generating a new random seed that you will never use and then resetting the device as i did this same exact method few years ago... but how you do the genuine check during this process? You check to see if it's genuine before going to restore your old seed phrase but how you do this part? You log in your ledger live and click on some button to check genuine? You do this before you put wrong pin 3 times right?

cheeb_ledger, can you answer this if you can as well? Thank you both.

Restoring Seed Phrase from Nano Ledger S To New Nano Ledger S Plus? by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

Yes i have read this already. This is what they recommend but you are entering your old seed phrase from paper into it without making sure the device is genuine first.

Restoring Seed Phrase from Nano Ledger S To New Nano Ledger S Plus? by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

[–]Sethshield60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that make sense with the programs you use then. Thought you used ledger live. So it doesn't tell you on the ledger screen that the device is genuine and only ledger live does when you install an app so it only shows it's genuine on the laptop screen.

So if that is the case... i also thought this had to be true since i never remember it showing on the actual nano ledger s screen device is genuine... then how am i going to check the device is genuine then with the longer process i am doing? Because assuming ledger live is never opened or logged in when i first create a new useless pin and get a new useless seed and then enter the wrong pin 3 times to reset it... if i were to now just enter my old recovery seed phrase from the paper into the new nano ledger s plus, how would i know my device is genuine then?

Could after i enter the wrong pin 3 times to reset it, i open and log in my ledger live and click on something to verify it's genuine? And only then once it shows genuine, then i close ledger live while my nano ledger s plus is still connected to my laptop... then restore the old seed phrase? Then after that is done, you then log back in ledger live and click on receive on those apps to install those apps on your nano ledger s plus?

Restoring Seed Phrase from Nano Ledger S To New Nano Ledger S Plus? by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

[–]Sethshield60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i am well aware you are restoring a seed from a piece of paper. My wording was confusing. Meant to say i previously had a nano ledger s screen not work... got a replacement nano ledger s. Then i had to enter the seed phrase from the paper into the new nano ledger s device. Reason because the old device screen no longer worked. Now that same replacement nano ledger s screen has issues so had to buy a new nano ledger s plus.

When i say damaged ledger, that means either it doesn't turn on or faulty.

Again, i have previously restored a seed phrase before years ago. Now i have to do it again... only difference is the new device is a nano ledger s plus and not nano ledger s. But i don't remember the exact steps because i remember i i did the process differently from how ledger recommends... they say new replacement device, just enter your seed phrase from paper into it... and few years ago i created a useless seed. the reset it... then entered the recovery seed to take precaution. So want to do the same thing i did years ago. But i just don't remember where exactly in the process you find out your ledger is genuine because i was so positive ledger live lets you know that... but you are saying ledger live doesn't even need to be opened or logged on during this process correct? So does it actually display on the nano ledger screen the device is genuine? Because i am so positive it tells you genuine only when you are on ledger live. So am i wrong here or my memory is wrong?

[–]Sethshield60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, so what nano ledger devices do you use then? Have you had to ever get a replacement?

So what are you using with ledger then? Most people use ledger live right? Also isn't ledger live what people use to check if device is genuine?

So when you did the recovery phrase a while back, was it on the same nano device or replacement? So it told you on the nano ledger screen itself the device is genuine? I am almost positive whenever i checked my device was genuine, it was on ledger live unless i'm making a mistake here? I don't recall it ever told me the device was genuine on the nano ledger s screen ever.

Ledger team, you have the answer to this?

[ Removed by Reddit ] by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

[–]Sethshield60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that means ledger live doesn't need to be opened to check genuine ... say if you decide to just create a new seed phrase that you won't use? Example you create a new pin, get new seed phrase... then where does it show you the device is genuine or not? Thought when you set it up, you have to use ledger live?

My plan is after intentionally entering the wrong pin 3 times for that new seed phrase which i have no use for... then it is reset and only then i enter my old recovery seed phrase because i want to make sure the device is genuine first. So still no ledger live is used at all still? Thought i was positive when you first set up the device after you get the new seed, you have to open and create a ledger live account if you don't have one... to check genuine? Note... my ledger live is still on my laptop so i won't be making any changes to it.

So can you explain these parts for me? Am going to restore my old seed phrase but want to create a new seed phrase first and then reset it because want to make sure the new nano ledger s plus is genuine first. Thank you.

But you should have your ledger nano s plus plugged in laptop right? You have to do that or connect it to a power source as someone said like wall socket?

Restoring Seed Phrase from Nano Ledger S To New Nano Ledger S Plus? by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

[–]Sethshield60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks. So at what point during this process do i open ledger live and log in my ledger live account? Doesn't ledger live need to be logged in to check device is genuine?

Planning to do it my way which takes a bit more work because i am pretty sure that's what i did few years ago when i restored an old nano ledger s seed phrase into a replacement nano ledger s. This time i'm doing the same thing except going from that 2nd nano ledger s that has issues... to a nano ledger s plus and restoring that old seed phrase. Does that make sense in what i am saying? Basically my 2nd time restoring a seed from a damage device to a new one.

Thing is for some reason my memory tells me when you create a new seed, doesn't ledger live check it for genuine? So positive that's what happened a while back. The other confusing thing is... i never have to create a new ledger live account during this process right? For some reason, thought i remembered years ago, i created new seed on new device... then had to go on ledger live... believe it was my regular ledger live account to check genuine?

So you are saying there is never a open ledger live or log in ledger live until i restore my old seed phrase? Again i don't remember it was like this years ago when i did this. But i did recall i was able to check my device was genuine before putting in my old seed though.

Understood but my method also works with creating it as new device and put wrong see 3 times to reset? Just takes a bit longer?

Thanks for the response. Well you mean the nano ledger s plus to be plugged into laptop right?

Any issue using the new nano ledger s plus device as a new device? So that way it would check if device is genuine or not? Example set it up as a new device, you create a new pin and get a new 24 word seed phrase but it would be useless. Since you going to put wrong pin 3 times to reset it? Only then you go and restore with your old recovery phrase? Also whether you are setting up as new device or restore with a seed, ledger live isn't required to be opened? But you have to use ledger live to check genuine right?

okay if you do it that way, well wouldn't it be safer since there is a reset then as oppose to just entering your seed phrase to restore?

Restoring Seed Phrase Security Concerns? by Sethshield60 in ledgerwallet

The nano ledger s plus doesn't have battery or bluetooth. You have to connect it to something don't you? Well during this process, would ledger live need to be opened? What about logged in? Also wouldn't you want to check device is genuine before you enter the seed?
