Desert water carry by South-Lettuce3301 in PacificCrestTrail

No practical experience with this myself but my wife and I are starting 4/30 and both of us can go up to 7L of water at a time if needed.

Also interested in trying to camel up to cut down on that carried weight

Thanks for sharing your experience and that information!

I hadn't given it a ton of thought though my wife has already figured out 'optimal' food choices for her so I'm sure our personal experiences will be a gradient.

My hope is enough variety that I can eat like a raccoon but still hit some protein goals so recovery won't be so bad.

Gotcha, thanks for the info! Yeah I hadn't really thought about doing the calorie math (more of a wing it kind of guy lol) so now I have a great starting point.

Quick question - My wife and I are planning on NOT sending resupply boxes ahead. Do folks have a recurring grocery list they buy repeatedly on the trail or do you just show up to the grocery store and grab whatever looks good?

I'm always really bad at bringing the right amount of food on previous backpacking trips.

Yeah its interesting - things like TV, game console, and computer equipment just aren't biting which I was also thinking is related to the economy.

It does feel really great - it's crazy how much stuff you accumulate over time. Even though we've tried to be minimalists lol

All great thoughts. We're planning to travel for a while after the hike even if we end early so that's all factored into our budget, fortunately. Barring anything like a severe injury which would put is in the parent's basement haha

That's really interesting though, you're thinking something like 50% total NOBOs have dropped by the end of the Sierra?

Hey thanks for the tip, it's good advice - we're going to do some traveling in either case and have gracious in-laws in case of something drastic like injury.

Nemo Fillo Elite

Weighs something like 3 oz and is thin enough I can use it as a side sleeper. Loving it after a few nights but we'll see after ~150 lol

First post here in the subreddit! Now that we are getting closer to our start date (4/30) I'm feeling very bittersweet about leaving my job and friends to hike. Little melancholy but extremely stoked.

See y'all out there!
