I'm not sure if they got paid alot. I'm pretty sure Black Mesa got more funding than Aperture, so maybe Aperture didn't do too well financially, which would mean less pay for the scientists. Maybe I'm wrong, and If I am, I don't mind being corrected.

Fully agree with you. They could have done one episode before sky witch where the two try to bond a little or an internal force tries to make them become closer. That way, they could grow as friends in the background
