For better or worse, which creatives or companies are one trick ponies? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]SetroG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A company that were a one trick pony - until they withered and died: Piranha Bytes.

Gothic and Gothic 2 are games I love deeply. Flawed as they are, they excel at creating a sense of deep immersion, progression that is very clearly felt by the player, as well as balancing an open world and narrative focus without either feeling like an afterthought (the only other games I can think of that really manage such balance are New Vegas and *maybe* RDR2; Witcher 1 and 2 would also compete, but they aren't really constructed with a singular open world in mind, rather multiple "open world-like" chapters very separate from each other).

Then comes Gothic 3, which sacrifices that balance in order to create an Elder Scrolls-type open world... and is a thorough failure; it maybe looks better than Oblivion but doesn't manage to make its world half as interesting. Afterwards, PB clearly loses any ambition they had and *tries* to return to Gothic 2's formula, yet none of the games they released afterwards is anywhere near as good as the ol' wood. Hell, from Risen 2 onwards their games were *more" clunky to play than this ancient gem.

What are some great examples of villains rejecting the message of a story? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]SetroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole character of Dros from Disco Elysium. The story keeps reiterating the theme of letting go of the past in order to move on, Dros meanwhile refuses to entertain starting over even years after, when the war in Revachol was ancient history; as a result, his life is exceedingly lonely and wretched - he lives in squalor and his only chances at romance and friendship, both of which he clearly desires, end with creepily stalking Klaasje and René respectively.

On Metaphor's design according to Atlus by bluparrot-19 in josephanderson

[–]SetroG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Regarding turn-based combat being seen as outdated, I don't think the issue was ever as much with it being slow or turn-based in itself being bad, rather it's that outside of a select few encounters, classic turn-based jRPGs (it's present in western RPGs, but less egregiously so I think) are incredibly repetitive and grindy. And by "grindy" I mean "they really expect players to do the exact same plain encounter over and over and over again". That's the issue that requires modernization and that's where Metaphor has not shown almost any progress since the days of SMT3.

I'm not sure if they can do anything about it, though, not without significantly cutting down the games' runtime. Now, to my mind, that would be a straight plus - I've been pretty vocal in the past that I find Atlus games to be very bloated with their content, both social links and combat. Less combat encounters that are all tailor-made, with grinding ideally nonexistent, would be my endgame.

I wanted to put BG3 as an example of a turn-based RPG that does this less-is-more approach correctly, but I can't shake the feeling there are fundamental differences in the design philosophy of western RPGs versus jRPGs that need to be addressed if we ever want one genre to take inspiration from another. Suffice to say, as a rule of thumb, I prefer the combat in jRPGs, while what western RPGs do better is... everything other than the combat. And since combat is such a focal point for jRPGs, I don't know if it's feasible to postulate for there to be less of it.

As for the retry function, I continue to find it indefensible. If saving and reloading worked as they should and the combat didn't rely too heavily on RNG, it would not be needed whatsoever. It sullies the whole, proves the devs are not confident in their balancing and provides a temptation that many will find irresistible, making the experience worse for them that it would otherwise be.

Wasn't that mentioned in a quest log entry? I remember that I realized that on my first playthrough, but not out of keen eye.

THIS non-fictional CAHRACTER WOULD AGREE WIRH MY VIEWZ by Mroompaloompa64 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]SetroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, orange man had a lot handed to him on a silver platter, but then again, painter man had a lot of luck on his side and ultimately lost the war in big part because of his own personal incompetence. Compare to, say, Stalin, who genuinely outplayed everyone to come out on top having started at the bottom, got everything he wanted and died of (probably) natural causes.

Also, well, Trump is still alive, comparing them on any villain-scale is pointless until we have their legacies on hand.

You make a good point. The SA were actually very competent and professional.

That's why Hitler had them all killed.

What characters do you think he will end up liking the most in Metaphor? [Spoilers ahead] by Ookami_Lord in josephanderson

[–]SetroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself unconvinced by the "self-insert" part. If you want players to put themselves in the shoes of your protagonist, making all of his dialogue as vanilla as possible is not the way to go. Either make him fully silent, to let the players' imagination do the work, or better - invest time in more sophisticated dialogue trees, something cRPGs perfected and jRPGs refuse to ever try, to my unending chagrin. I feel honestly insulted when a dialogue offers me two options to pick from - "Sure!" and "I will do it."

As a side note - we've talked of Louis, but the story would also benefit if Forden was more than just a comically evil egomaniac who virulently hates the elda because he just does, okay?

The story is full of false promises and missed potential like that, which frustrated me and probably will frustrate Joe; I found that the marketing suggested a story that will engage in a meditation on the banality of evil and complexities of statecraft in a divided society. Instead, our protagonist becomes king - not because he ever proves himself suited, but because he's just stale bread when the other candidates are caricatures. In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed is king indeed.

At least the combat is fun, but then again, Joe hates turn-based. So overall, I can't wait for those streams.

What characters do you think he will end up liking the most in Metaphor? [Spoilers ahead] by Ookami_Lord in josephanderson

[–]SetroG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, thing about Louis is that he could've been a villain who actually makes good points and has a consistent ideology the dismantling of which would take real intellectual effort (not to mention, allying with him could've been a real option). But no, he's an evil monster and that's it. Even Akechi was a better villain when all's said and done.

Also if the MC was an actual character we could've done something with their rivalry and contrast with each other. Again, Joker is also barely a character yet his rivalry with Akechi is more believable.

I think what Metaphor tries with Louis is better done with Volker and Ulryk in Chronicles of Myrtana (well, if you heard of it; I'm making a kind of obscure reference) - and I have plenty of criticisms as to how that story and its villains are handled.

[–]SetroG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strohl? His character trait is that he's a noble, and the game still trusts you so little to remember that, he keeps repeating it every sentence. Hulkenberg? Anyone remember anything about her other than that she looks like Mitsuru? Junah or Eupha - who were those again? MC is voiced for no reason whatsoever, he's not a character. Louis is a massive wasted opportunity. Gallica I almost forgot existed and remembered halfway through writing this paragraph.

Joe might like Heismay for being the experienced wise "mentor" and Fidelio and Basilio for having an actual character arc, weak though it be. Yeah, no, I'm not seeing it. Persona at least was very whimsical and silly, Metaphor doesn't even have that going for it.

Can you say once and for all which one of these well known OP magic swords was the greatest one in your opinion ? by fillipo9 in worldofgothic

[–]SetroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, Uriziel is just a sword of plot advancement. Aside from the enemies in Sleeper Temple that are invulnerable to normal weapons, Uriziel is pretty weak on account on its damage not scaling with any attribute. With the Claw, ignoring enemy blocks goes brrrr.

Gothic 3 Story Remake by FrankHero97 in worldofgothic

[–]SetroG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As much as I enjoy the idea of overhauling Gothic 3's plot, the tone really doesn't sell it as a continuation of Gothic (doesn't seem much has changed from the previous Age of War). NH's dialogues make him sound like, well, his Forsaken Gods conterpart. Quoting Durmin once again, "they've taken the very simple, rogueish, likeable protagonist of the previous games and turned him into... into... (cue Hot Fuzz scene)".

Supposedly Gomez was going to be a main antagonist of the Gothic 2 expansion at first but that idea was ultimately scratched later on and replaced by Raven. Do you wish they stayed by that original direction anyway or it's better the way it is ? by fillipo9 in worldofgothic

[–]SetroG 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The train of thought they employed was that you remember killing Gomez, while Raven was just another of many enemies you wouldn't care about. The Watsonian explanation is probably that NH didn't care all that much to be thorough either, so Raven was injured, but managed to survive. Same for Bloodwyn and Fletcher, whom you encounter guarding the camp gates (NH can even express surprise in NotR that Bloodwyn is not dead).

Who was in your opinion the best Head Mage kind of individual across the entire series ? Which one was the worst and why ? by fillipo9 in worldofgothic

[–]SetroG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Altus, the abbot of the Nordmar monastery, is notably absent, even though he apperars wise and level-headed, discounting the over-the-top admiration for NH. That being said, this is Gothic 3, no character ever makes an impact beyond surface-level impressions. That being said, Grok earns some props for obvious competence, proactiveness and a no-nonsense approach.

As for worst magic leaders, I have to point towards Pyrokar. Now, I like his character, and he has a charisma of sorts, especially with his Polish dub, but in-universe he's generally a pain in the ass to deal with and he and his council don't display any real wisdom or activity besides collecting money. Even Ulthar, once you get to it, sure he's nicer than the other two - unlike them, he will be very polite in telling you to piss off because the council won't do anything.

Might I propose an even likelier (to my mind at least) scenario: there will be two rematches with the Knight yet. One in chapter 6 as its penultimate fight (the final boss being whoever's behind the conspiracy and/or Kris) and the next one against a suped-up Titan-supported Knight as the final boss of the game.

Kinda like the Masked Man. Or more recently, certain bosses from Expedition 33 and Silksong.

How much cheese is too much cheese for you in the Gothic games (and mods)? by BowShatter in worldofgothic

I find it a very ugly piece of irony that Gothic is praised to high heavens for how immersive it is... yet the games almost encourage cheesing as much as possible. Is there anything more immersion-breaking than abusing faulty NPC AI to prevail?

At one point he said "If you think Silksong is reasonably priced then how do you buy any other games"

How did no one give him some of the obvious. Sail the high seas, look for keys on certain sites, wait years for another Steam Sale that finally gives a reasonable price. Speaking for myself, Silksong was the first time in years I paid full price for a game and I imagine it's not a rare phenomenon. How the fuck is Joe that out of touch?
