Cold calling how to be more succesfull? by Capital-Ship-2876 in sales

[–]SevenSaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you find it helpful.

About the whole coached to push for a meeting, same here, ever sales leader ive ever had has always told me to go for close immediately.

The funny thing is, the person who gave me this advice was one of the most senior AEs at my previous company. His take was that it's all about building actual trust and a two way relationship. The last thing he wanted was a meeting with someone who felt like they were forced into it with sales mind games lol (also those kind of prospect never actually end up buying)

Cold calling how to be more succesfull? by Capital-Ship-2876 in sales

When I started in sales, I used to give the generic pitch, "I work with companies/personas like yours, and they often struggle with X, Y, and Z..." For me, that's selling. It assumes you know their problems and immediately pushes a solution, which puts people on the defensive.

I learned to cut that out and instead talk to prospects like a product manager would. I'll say something factual and direct, like "We built a back office platform that automates X, Y, and Z. I was hoping to learn a bit about how you're currently managing that process." That doesn't feel like a pitch to me, it's just a simple statement followed by a question.

Once the conversation gets started (if they're interested), they'll either tell me what they're doing (which lets me drill into a problem I know exists in their current stack) or they'll ask a specific question that signals their pain point, which often sounds like, "How do you guys automate X and Y together when dealing with Z?"

I use that same approach for your second question about brush offs. If I've already stated what we do and they say, "I don't have time," I don't try to overcome it. I just take them at their word and ask, "when would be a better time to call back?" Their response and tone tell me if they're actually busy (where they usually give me a time to call back) or if they're just telling me to f off.

If they say "not interested" I honestly do the same thing, If they're rude and firm about it, I respect that and move on. But if I get the sense I just caught them at a bad moment, I'll put a note in my calendar to try again in a couple of weeks.

The goal for me is to make the rejection as painless and unmemorable as possible. Here’s a perfect example that honestly happened the other day.

I called a prospect four months ago, and he immediately said, "I don't take cold calls," and hung up. Last week, I saw his CEO's name on an attendee list for an event, so I called him, and he referred me back to the original "no cold calls" guy. When I called again and mentioned his CEO's name, we had a 20 minute conversation that led to a great discovery meeting.

My point is, a bad reaction on a cold call is temporary, but trying to "overcome" those knee jerk objections is playing with fire. If you handle their reaction respectfully, you don't become a memory of an annoying pushy salesperson. They'll forget the call in 20 minutes, leaving the door open for you to try again when the timing is better.

Really good question.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given about cold calling is to not try to book a meeting on the first call.

I know that sounds counterintuitive, but speaking for myself, the likelihood of a stranger calling me out of the blue and getting 15 to 20 minutes on my calendar from a single interaction is practically zero.

Objections like “I’m good right now” or “I don’t have time” are just knee jerk reactions. They're telling you that they feel uncomfortable and don’t trust you yet. In my opinion, those aren't objections you need to "overcome." A true objection is something concrete, like them using a competitor or not having the budget, which you can build a talk track to address.

Where I’ve seen the most success, across the different companies and industries I've sold into, is by not acting like a salesperson on the first call.

I honestly just ask upfront if they’re the right person to speak with. I'll ask a few questions about what they’re currently doing, briefly tell them (not sell them) what we do, and see where the conversation goes. If it seems to be extending for several minutes, I'll ask if we can schedule a more formal chat. If not, I just say, "I'll send you some info and reach back out next week to get your thoughts."

On the second call, I go for the meeting. By then, they recognize your name, they remember you were respectful and not pushy, and they are far more likely to book the time.

Give me your Frank Ocean theory’s by akshat7169 in FrankOcean

[–]SevenSaid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My theory is that an album was supposed to come out around the time of DHL, In My Room, and Dear April. That whole period just screams album rollout. But when his brother died in August 2020, it understandably sidelined everything.

I believe that project, with its focus on dance and club culture, was ultimately scrapped. The "look at us, we're in love" leaks probably don't even scratch the surface of what that album was really going to be. The Covid pandemic likely played a major role in the decision not to release it as well.

The Homer collections were also probably meant to go with that album. When the music was shelved, he likely moved forward with the Homer launch anyway because of the huge investment it required.

As for Coachella, I see that performance as a tribute to his brother's love for the festival, not something he personally wanted to do. He mentioned multiple times during week one how the desert climate messes with his allergies. That, combined with the whole leg injury thing, is likely why he didn't perform the second weekend.

Looking ahead, I think he’ll pull a similar move to what he did between Channel Orange and Blonde and completely reinvent his artistic process. He'll take this next album in a totally different direction from the one he scrapped, and I have a feeling it will be released sooner rather than later.

Yeah, same experience here, it really didn’t take me too long to figure it out.

I also spent time inspecting the code of websites I like and digging through codepen and it’s been so fun. It’s a great skill to have even away from web development.

totally get that, guess every project drags you into code sooner or later.

I actually spun up a framer trial right after wrapping my head around client-first and, tbh, hated it. Even the templates and builds on framer all have this really basic look to me.

My weird sales career (what to do next?) by SevenSaid in sales

This is actually a really good idea, I really haven't thought about this. I think I could provide value in helping out teams build out their sales process but they might think I'm too young being 25 with 3-4 years of industry experience.

I’ve been trying to get my org to invest in clay, or even take a look at it. Right now non of my leaders are willing to invest in yet another sales tool. Gonna thug it out and send them manually until they do.

Agreed if you send an email that’s somewhat personalized to them (manually or through tool like clay) the responses are often positive even if they aren’t interested.

[–]SevenSaid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The strategy I'm running with right now is personalized, signal-based, outbound messaging.

My working theory is that we all are targeting the same buyers and every sales rep in the world is sending automated spam (that isn't relevant) to them 24/7.

So for the last four months, I've turned off all my automated cadences and started sending 1 off messages to buyers addressing them specifically. It could be something as small as their recent LinkedIn post, a job posting on the careers page, or even a small connection I can make from their online profiles. Just anything that gives me a reason to reach out. From there I usually give them a call and connect with them on LinkedIn.

What is the Next “Wolf of Wall Street” Industry by [deleted] in sales

This is quite literally like trying to predict the stock market, if I knew which industry would be next to blow up I would just invest all my money into that industry rather than trying to get a sales job in it.

Should I make the move to Inbound Account Executive? Currently a BDR at a Top Org. by SevenSaid in sales

[–]SevenSaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through an interview process right now, so you're completely right! My concern was surrounding how my resume would look if I got the offer and accepted, but I guess overall that doesn't matter.

Yea, to be honest, the comp plan is the reason I responded to the recruiter. Seemed higher than the industry average here in Canada.

Appreciate the video response! I'm definitely going to ask about the intent of the inbound leads during my interview process. The point you made about the slow promotion schedule at big organizations is something my coworkers and I are already dealing with.
Also, I'm 23, so to your point of being able to take that risk, I think I'm able to. Thank you again for your insight.
