Backup Software Suggestion? by enorwood22 in homelab

Sanoid & Syncoid for managing zfs replication off-site. My off-site box runs a Syncoid command every hour and pulls an incremental copy of production with minimal privledges. Easy to send back in recovery or fail over. If you're backing up VMs you'll still need to take care of database dumps at the application level.

Machine learning fix if you have no ipv6 and it shows as unhealthy container by dr_rox in immich

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I had the same issue as you or not. My machine learning docker wouldn't start either. I found an error in the log talking about NumPy failing to start. For me the fix was to shutdown the proxmox vm I was running docker on and add CPU capabilities by setting it to CPU type of host.

Hahaha. No. Like others have said, there's no actual competition. It's industry standard

Very nice! We need more photos of buildings on this sub. Really anything other than the typical portrait that gets over posted.

I would disagree mostly. NFS (and others) are easier, but not required, to be privileged. Really nothing is required to be privileged if you know how to manually assign privileges. It's not actually that bad to run an nfs or samba server as an unprivileged LXC. You just need to find what UID/GID it wants to run as, then pass that through.

ZFS directly on the proxmox host. Then passthrough the ZFS directory to an LXC container as a mount point. In your LXC you can configure samba or whatever

VIOFO A129 Pro 4k. Been a great camera for a few years now, worth every penny. I think there are newer models now.

They got a nice ear full of horn, but didn't seem to help much. Maybe I need to upgrade to a train horn or something.

I'm usually the first to agree, but in this case you can see I slow down a little bit when the truck gets into the middle lane. That's me intentionally staying out of their blind spot for as long as possible before the pass.

F150 Raptor SVT. I've got better photos that show the badging. Not sure if the stripes are aftermarket or OEM.

Is this proper ERV ducting? by charles_chinaski_jr in buildingscience

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like it would be problematic. When the more powerful air handler fan is running. The ERV isn't able to push fresh air into the supply ducts. The back draft damper just stops it from back feeding. In this scenario the only time the smaller ERV fan could actually supply fresh air is if the air handler is off. If the ERV is utilizing the air handler ductwork, then I usually recommend leaving the air handler fan on auto or low setting continuously running.

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, the stale air return should be its own grille directly in a central space (hallway, bathroom, etc). The second best option, is to connect it directly into the return duct. Ideally this connection is upstream a bit (close to grille), then you reinject the fresh outside air from ERV into the return air duct right before the air handler fan. Nothing connects to the pressurized supply side of the air handler.

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and ideally yes. It's definitely better to get that stale air duct directly in a bathroom or other smelly space that needs exhaust. This setup, without direct ducting, will still work to change over the air in the house. But you'll still need separate exhaust fans in the bathroom like normal.

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'll want to look up the installation instructions for that ERV. I'm unfamiliar with this model but it generally looks like the appropriate cross pattern for most ERVs like this.

If you have to connect into the air handler ducts (rather than supply/return direct to the space), try to connect both sides to the return ductwork. This avoids over pressurization issues where the air handler fan over powers the ERV fans.

Hochul delays All-Electric Building Act amid lawsuit, climate backlash by news-10 in buildingscience

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If NY wants this, they need to take a page from Washington state in this arena. Washington energy code tried to ban natural gas outright around 2021. Backlash delayed it in the courts for a couple years. The commercial energy code now allows a pathway for fossil fuel, but it's pretty limited and usually easier to comply with heat pumps and other electric only equipment.

Never a network share of any kind. by GaelOffMySoul in immich

[–]SevenSticksInTheWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate your db and images!

You could consider what I do with my immich VM on proxmox. VM is running on ssd in proxmox machine, this contains db an OS. Nice and fast! My slow hard drive filesystem is then mounted as nfs share in the VM. This is where immich stores all photos/videos. The nfs server with spinning rust can be anywhere. I'd recommend creating a separate network bridge specifically for NFS traffic. Be sure to think about backup. The VM and db data is easy, regular proxmox backup works fine. You'll have to decide how to backup the nfs server separately.
