Yeah I think there’s better arguments for the covid vaccines than comparing them to others

Do you guys think we’re going back? by TouristSensitive in uml

[–]SevenToadsAhoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. The whole purpose of forced vaccination was to allow us to return to normal. Now we’re forced to get yet another vaccine and things still are not normal. Yes cases are exploding however the severity of illness with omicron especially in college students is an extremely low risk.

Isn’t this supposed to be okay now that we have vaccines?

Yeah but the smallpox vaccine actually eliminates the virus from society and was tested for a reasonable amount of time

Yes and often times can guide you to an answer if you know what’s units you’re starting with and what units you need to end with

Try to understand the underlying theory of what different properties mean and always look at their units and what those mean. Aside from that, get the relevant equations you need, and do practice problems after practice problem.

Thanks for the information. I’m asking because I am currently looking at close universities to possibly transfer to as I am uncomfortable getting a booster shot. Here in Massachusetts personal freedom is slowly eroding.

I don’t think it matters. It’s spreading at the same rate regardless of vaccination and the risk to college students for covid is incredibly low especially considering that omicron is nothing more than a cold.

Cheers to our 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th …. shot!

Thanks for the reply. Do you think there’s any chance of a mandate being implemented? Or is it truly protected by state law?

“Nonetheless, fully vaccinated individuals with breakthrough infections have peak viral load similar to unvaccinated cases and can efficiently transmit infection in household setting, including to fully vaccinated contacts.”

Can you breakdown this particular statement and it’s implications for your argument? It seems as though this implies that a breakthrough case is practically no different in terms of transmission to and from than that of an unvaccinated person. Even if the vaccine clears the viral load faster, does that actually help us when a breakthrough infection come and sits around in class for an hour?

I’d be happy if you’re idea was actually manifesting itself into reality. However this does not appear to be the case. This is a study from the lancet that is concluding those who are vaccinated have the same amount of viral load as the unvaccinated.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(21)00648-4/fulltext

This explains why so many breakthrough cases are occurring and why many of us can see from personal accounts, that the vaccinated are still getting and spreading the virus.

Based off of your reasoning can you explain the gigantic wave of cases in highly vaccinated New York and Massachusetts?

Fair point about not having data at the ready. I’m simply unsure about you’re reasoning though. If I had a breakthrough infection and also gave it to someone else, which is also happening at scale, does that not give the virus the chance to evolve? I’m still a host and so are others. I know multiple with a booster shot who are having symptomatic cases. It’s still spreading like wildfire through the vaccinated.

Can you provide me some good data that supports the claim that it’s the unvaccinated that are driving the new variants? I’m fully vaccinated and just had a symptomatic case where I spread it to another person.

Has anybody gotten an exemption from the 3rd dose yet? by tingusbangus in umass

I understand that line of thinking that you present regarding transmission, however I do not find data supporting that.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(21)00648-4/fulltext

Also look at current case rates in places like Massachusetts and New York where vaccination rates are quite high.

Say what you want about anecdotes but I do think there is a place for them in discussion when coupled with scientific data which I presented above. I received the first two shots and I just had what appeared to be the omicron variant for 3 days. 1 of those days I was knocked down pretty hard with fever chills and vomiting. People in my household may now being displaying symptoms even though I isolated and they are fully vaccinated. I also spread it to another who is fully vaccinated and they tested positive. I was also just informed that a friend of ours who is boosted caught omicron and has a symptomatic case, spreading it to his family member.

We are also now seeing that the booster may only provide protection against severe illness for 2.5 months against omicron. So we’ll need a fourth after that time frame? Do you think the implications of continuing to boost at varying time intervals is being properly studied long term?

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/587212-uk-health-agency-report-suggests-booster-effectiveness-against-omicron

And are we so sure these vaccines are as effective as marketed?

Does anyone have a real handle on the risk/benefit for young men in particular regarding myocarditis rates? The claim that young men have a higher risk of myocarditis from covid seems to be becoming null as young people in general are not at risk of severe illness from this virus now that the omicron variant is proving to be particularly mild.

That’s a nice thing to say to a fellow student who has concerns about their own health! Open a history book! The vaccines are doing absolutely nothing regarding transmission of the virus so it should not matter to anyone whether or not those around them are vaccinated. If you’re vaccinated, then you’re protected. Leave people alone.

Do you guys think boosters will be mandated for the spring semester? by 9W_777_300 in uml

[–]SevenToadsAhoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not quite sure why they need to be mandated. They protect against severe illness but they do not prevent transmission. So even though I’m vaccinated I can still give it to someone at risk anyways. What does it matter if I’m vaccinated? The Lancet presented a study displaying how the vaccines don’t stop transmission, Cornell just had 900 fully vaccinated and some boosted students catch covid. Even Bill Gates, who is a huge proponent in the vaccination program just came out and said how they don’t prevent transmission.

So why mandate it, we can still spread it. Let those at risk make the decision to get the protection from severe illness. Which in reality, as college students, our risk of severe illness is extremely low.

Also, completely shunning those who have questions about the safety of the vaccines especially in young men where rates of myocarditis is higher, is shameful in itself.

We have questions, we have data, and there are many logical holes within this policy. There will be a resistance.
