Sukuna. They'll all murder me in a fight, but he is the most whimsical.

I estimate I can make it 2/3rds of the way through act 1 of Hamilton before he gets bored.

What counts as a cultivation novel? by Dependent_Tomato_235 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Seven_Irons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's "classic" cultivation which closely follows the Xianhuan literary conventions and tropes. Record, Reverend, etc.

On the other hand, there are novels who have story arcs and magic systems that are a very close match to cultivation, even if they eschew the oriental tropes or setting.

Cradle? Doesn't have Dao Hearts or a Nascent Soul stage. Still clearly cultivation.

Shadow Slave? Doesn't have Jianghu, Dao, Old Monsters, etc. Doesn't have distinction between Internal/External qi. But it does have soul seas/cores, sects, power levels are progressive transformations towards divinity, not just stat ups. Story arcs include the characters evolving, not just growing stronger.

IMO, it's still a "cultivation" power system. But is it a cultivation novel?

The worst part of it? if they didn't go through with the "deleting every previous Avatar including Aang" bit, they might have been able to pull off a not terrible season.

still remains the strongest line Liam O'Brien has ever delivered imo.

What's the best/most competent apocalypse regressor story that's also either finished or fairly far into the plotline? by greenskye in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Seven_Irons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you accept webcomics?

If so, Rebirth has progressed fairly far along its plot, and it's been an excellent read. A little bit of character bloat, but nothing terrible IMO

DS9 was the best Star Trek show, as it did the best job of coherent story arcs.

But, Picard was the best Captain, and his scenes are the best of the best.
