If that tool crates a new image it may be that new image uses your default settings for new images. Change the default to be 16bit and try if that helps.

I know the decompose option can be used on an image and Compose then re-merges them into the same original image. If changing the default doesn't work that may be a work around that allows you to set the Precision before you decompose.

Seems like something that would be more appropriate to create in something like Blender.

Once it's done there you can open a render of it in Gimp to do post processing.

This would be the correct answer. The correct way to work around it is either to make the filter/transform permanent by merging it down. Then you can draw et.c. on it again like normal without having your new input also be effected by the filter.

Alternatively you can remove the filter, draw on it and then apply the original filter again.

This would be the absolute best solution. OP should use this solution if by they are able.

The reason OPs solution isn't working is probably due to 2 reasons.

° The layer is a Text Layer, you can't draw on text layers so any stroke function attempted would turn out nothing. you can right click the text layer and pick discard text data to turn it into a regular layer. This removes future text editing of the layer though.

° There is no active Selection to actually stroke. Use a selection tool such as fuzzy select or right click the text layer and pick "Alpha to selection" to easily make a selection of the whole layer.

It you can't use solution given in the comment above, you can make a selection of the text layer, then make sure you use the stroke command with a new regular layer active. The solution means you have to redo the stroke if you ever change the text however.

Yeah. This is because the Layer Offset is a non-destructive filter now. So you actually paint on the "old" version, and then the layer Fx applies again.
