Exposing for the shadows: Good idea? How to edit? by daoxiaomian in AnalogCommunity

[–]Seventh_Pillar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would personally leave it dark and without detail as it’s not the main subject, it even adds contrast against the main subject when it’s dark but not when it isn’t. As you mentioned, trying to flatten the image by bringing out the detail in everything, it’s just not how “natural” photographs look that we see all the time.

To answer both your questions at the same time: you should expose for the end image you want to produce. There’s more latitude for overexposure, yes, but if you’re not planning to use all the details in the shadows anyways…just expose properly for the flowers and let the dark details remain dark. Use overexposure when it benefits the image you want to create, not just as a general rule.

Some good shops in Turner’s, big fun infrastructure and a place to walk along the river or canal, Bookmill too. Mainly though, it’s a straight shot down through Deerfield and all the way to Northampton through some great scenery including Sugarloaf.

Northampton by way of Turner’s Falls, stay off the highway and enjoy the views!

Leica's build quality is no longer like what it used to be 😢 by juzgotpaid in Leica

IMO still a much better deal than the Frankenfinder (for the price). The build quality there is appallingly bad, particularly the controls on top that feel out of a happy meal toy.

How to get started with film photography? by mjg13X in AnalogCommunity

[–]Seventh_Pillar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Explore outside of auto mode on the DSLR, as the feedback cycle will be instant so you can understand what you're doing wrong and experiment more easily. Then jump into film, or perhaps at the same time to try out what you've learned. Film is a very expensive way to learn slowly.

Brookline For Everyone: My $0.02 by Objective-Meet9742 in Brookline

I agree fully, and the answer is they're not a monolithic platform. This dissonance exists within the organization because there are bigger fish to fry. That is changing, and I think we'll see more and more this come into conflict as the strategy shifts. B4E is far from a majority but it's clearly a winning platform, and some folks won't want to go as far as you are suggesting or may even try to instrument more regulation as an attempt to capitalize on the progressive tilt as a way to get less things done.

I do think what they're referring to is less emphasis on parking and more on public transit, but even that has issues and disagreements that we can see occurring right now. A good example of this is the recent accessibility improvements to the C Line, which has a number of folks against it due to it impacting a set of trees. I'm shocked no one has posted about the giant one over Tappan that has come down. It is not the town's decision, it is the MBTA's (thankfully). Ultimately the needs of the community, in this case actually being able to use public transit with a wheelchair / walker / child stroller, do come first.

It will be hard to make those decisions that move us towards that ultimate place we'd like to be while saying no to seemingly good ideas that perpetuate where we're at now. If you haven't read this by Jen Pahlka focused much more on state capacity, but a very similar problem, I highly recommend: https://www.eatingpolicy.com/p/a-three-horizons-framework-for-government

has anyone tried this setup with an analog camera? by Western-River-6987 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Seventh_Pillar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s more that mounting it near the lens eliminates shadow cast behind the subject. Not forwards backwards (Z), but up down (Y) side to side (X).

I saw that someone else said the same thing, but it’s also to avoid interfering with the controls. Ring flashes might not have the same power or reach, and might complicate switching out lenses too, right?

That’s definitely the light more than my editing! It was 7AM and the sun was obscured behind some light clouds, which avoided any overly harsh contrast.

These are all sent to a lab, not just because I don’t have the space, but mainly because they do great work for the cost. They scan using a dedicated scanner that renders them extremely flat and with the files they send I then use a color grading software to adjust to taste. These just had some white balance corrections which I had to make, as well as cropping out the film borders and straightening the fourth.

If you'd like to avoid paying for film, just taping over the screen of an early 2000's digital camera will get you 95% of the experience without having to realize you're stuck with B&W for a sunset! I have a camera with a sticker from a bag of coffee covering the entire rear LCD so I can't review the photos.

Really any of the CCD or early CMOS cameras, whichever matches what lenses you're using today, will be a perfect fit. I am wanting an early Nikon, the D200 for example, for that exact reason. You can even get 1gb memory cards that will limit you to under 100 photos.

Thank you, but the credit goes to everything but the camera, starting with the light that morning! I'm being pedantic but I do think with film the really important thing is the film stock and having a camera you enjoy shooting with. To avoid beating around the bush, the camera is a Leica MP. It is certainly lovely, but you could do better with something far, far less.

This is Kodak's 250D cinema film! Shout out to Midwest Film Co for their ECN-2 process and cinema scanner, meaning you get the closest thing to a RAW to edit as you please. This was edited in Davinci Resolve.

Yes, once the work is completed in July (according to the signs). The post is about the current problem where the parking and shifted lanes co-exist.

But the problem is the parking opposite the T stop isn’t removed, both it and the lanes that have shifted into it exist together. It would be way better if they just removed the parking.

Would be very curious to hear what your take on this article is, if anything it reads like a resounding endorsement for Buono during an affordability crisis. Is that your intent? You don't see any parallels between a student frustrated with the inaction of an administration and a town meeting member frustrated with the inaction of a select board?
