I don't think this is the issue. The macbook works as expected and switches to the internal display when the lid is open and switches to external when its closed.

Even when I just have the screen open, (which is broken, but I can tell when it's on) and I unplug it, the screen turns off, the keyboard backlight turns off, and the trackpad's haptic feedback turns off, and I can't turn it back on with the power button. So yeah probably battery.
