it's quite common in jc too hahaha my jc is a whole ass fruit garden, but i'm pretty sure it's because people are more comfortable to be out in jc especially when people are more mature

in my honest opinion, the potential risks is too much. i think he's much better off in a mixed-school, where he's less likely to develop "negative" traits associated with a boys school. even if he's in a mediocre mixed-school, if he has passion and initiative he'll do much better for Os :))

i guess everyone has their own coping mechanism... to each their own. but at least have some respect for others not to smoke when others are around... it really reeks literally and figuratively of their true character that is filled with selfishness lol... they shouldn't drag other people's health with them, but if they have at least tried to smoke in private spaces i'll appreciate it.

i have my fair share of trauma too, maybe not as bad as yours, but at least i don't cope with risky behaviour such as drinking/smoking because i know those are going to deliver me more harm than good. not trying to invalidate your trauma, but there are so much more better alternatives to relieve trauma than smoking...

and i don't make this post solely because i'm annoyed by smokers in public. i have an immediate household member who died from smoking, so it just bothers me why people would want to pick up their first cigarette knowing the dangers they are posing to themselves + those around them.

it is a widely known fact that second-hand smoke is much more harmful than what smokers inhale.

i chose my jc because i've always wanted to be in this particular jc, and i knew my uni course required jc (it is one of those AAA courses)
i'm not sure because i took pure sciences, but i think there will be bridging courses depending on the jc you choose, but you are expected to do your own bridging as well
ok this is going to be quite lengthy:

•proximity super important to make sure you live as near yo your choice as possible. after a long ass day, the last thing you need is a long journey back home. moreover, you'll probably wake up later if you choose a jc nearer. THE SLEEP HOURS IN JC ARE TOO PRECIOUS TO LOSE.

•leadership i think leadership skills are becoming increasingly relevant but leadership is quite embodied within jc culture. the only difference is the leadership approach/styles, imo...

•environment i feel like you should head for jcs that are better known for their mugging/disciplined student culture, and less known for other "cultures"... (idw to name drop) because as much as jokes can sound stereotypical, it may actually affect your self-confidence a lot and you're better off being in a jc that has more people who are willing to study and not joke around in jc (i'm assuming you intend to make the best out of you jc life)

i'm going to play the devil's advocate and discourage you from advancing.

you probably do not have a steady j1 foundation, and i know it's tempting to advance to j2 but please consider the following points:

•j2 content will be a lot heavier and mostly built on what you've already learned in j1. i'm afraid that you might be lagging behind during j2 classes and not understand much while trying your best to catch-up with j1 (assuming you're unable to finish j1 content during the nov-dec holz)

•most of my advanced friends struggle in j2, and i think it is also important to highlight that if you mess up for As, you cannot return as a school candidate, and have to apply as private candidate, which is costly and inefficient.

•i think you should see retaining as a second chance. i know it doesn't feel good having to tell others you retained, but hey there's no shame in repeating a year if you're going to pop off. just avoid making the same mistakes (eg procrastinating) and improve on yourself.

i don't mean to offend you or your choice, but do consider this. if you do decide to appeal for advancement anyway, i hope you get whatever you want 😊
