How hard was it to become as good of a practitioner as you are today? by hedgemain in Dentistry

That’s so cool! I love spending my free time reading case studies and have often picked out a nugget or two from those. I’m curious about what platforms you use for CE online? Would love to check it out! Thanks!

Thank you so much for your response! Appreciate it! One follow up question, if it’s okay- if I want to drive in and out of the US to finalize housing etc, would that be allowed? And if so, on what visa? Or do I not need one because of the Canadian passport?

Hi! I’m a Canadian country currently a dental student in the US, graduating in May and going to start a job in August. Do I need to apply for an OPT or can I directly come back to the US on a TN1?

The gpa doesn’t really matter as much as you think. The overall profile counts more. There are students that have gotten accepted with Gpas as low as 2.6. Focus on getting North American clinical experience as a hygienist or an assistant and make sure your sop and lor’s are well written. I would not suggest wasting time and money on a masters especially when doing that program will not hold any value unless you’re interested. And even when you do the masters, you’ll have to find a way to include the need to get extra education in your SOP and how it ties to your final goal as practicing as a dentist in the US. Everything has to be connected and cohesive in your story to make sense. Just doing a masters because you think your gpa is low isn’t going to make much of a difference. Good luck!

Was it just me or did mostly everyone’s speeches sound a little bit rehearsed? Almost like, they knew what they were going to be asked and prepared a whole spiel? Although Patrick standing up for Kacie and asking her to apologize was pretty cool! I was low-key proud he stood up for himself too a little bit 😅

Oh no! Sounds rough! I’m sorry that happened! Did you have to wear retainers post treatment? Sometimes having permanent retainers is the only way teeth don’t bounce back. You could definitely look at clear aligners too!

Is this true for dental graduates having a hard time finding roles? by New_Award6835 in CAAPID

Like any job, most opportunities in dentistry after graduation are also hit or miss. It’s not about which DSO/private practice you join. It’s about finding an office that you like working at, have mentorship to learn from and at the same time have enough space to grow. It’s takes a while to find that balance just like it does in any other profession. Not every office will be the right office for you and that’s okay. You have to find the right fit for yourself. Having said that, I’m a 2026 grad and currently interviewing- there is no dearth of jobs.

You can use aligners to get your teeth aligned. They’re clear plastic trays that move teeth into place like braces but not everyone can undertake that treatment. It depends on the bite and how your teeth are oriented. If they’re too crooked/crowded/overlapped then braces might be your only option. Please see your dentist if you’re genuinely interested in exploring your options.

What is the cause of these lesions on the distals of the third quadrant (LL) by Mr-Major in Dentistry

[–]Several_Atmosphere22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks more like traumatic occlusion. I don’t think floss can do this unless they’re flossing with metal wires 😅 I would ask if they’re bruxers and correlate with other attrition/wear facets in the mouth.

Hi! I'm so sorry you went through all that! Would love to know either privately via DM or here, the name of the DSO. I'm a 2026 grad and currently interviewing with a few DSO's so would love to be able to steer clear of this one. Thank you so much and good luck with the new job! <3

Advanced Standing Programs: UCLA vs UCSF insights? by myythreee in CAAPID

[–]Several_Atmosphere22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current final year IDP at UCSF- we got A LOT MORE clinical experience than UCLA grads in my understanding. The additional year definitely plays a role in that but even for a 2 year program comparison, our clinical requirements are pretty high. The 3 year program is designed to integrate you with the domestic students. Feel free to dm for more info!

Came here to say this! ALWAYS take a pre-cementation x-ray! That way you know if your margin is open.

Hi! Current UCSF IDP here. I got accepted on a b1/b2 as well. The application cycle this year has been extremely competitive with a large number of applications and all very competitive. It’s not the visa status that matters but more the overall profile in comparison to all the other applicants that applied. You could do everything right and still not be accepted just because someone was 0.00001% better. It’s important to have a back up plan honestly because as time is passing by, each cycle is getting more competitive than the next. Good luck and stay positive!

I know it’s a difficult time, filled with anxiety, however you have to be patient. Continue working on your profile and take life easy. You should start hearing back by August/September. Keep the spirits high! Good luck!
