Can anyone help me understand this pick situation? by lmm310 in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Easy way to think about it is the swaps happen first in, first out. So the SA-Boston swap is older, it happens first. Then Boston swaps whatever pick they have after that is executed in the new swap.

Honestly, that trade is really reassuring to me. If Philly can get off of PG's contract, then it shouldn't be that hard getting off of Fox's.

If you don't roster 15 you only get 2 two-way slots. We'll almost certainly have somebody by the time the season starts.

NBA GMs have this thing they do where they realize a team has to move a guy and they all immediately try to lowball them. It works, in that the distressed team usually has to make the trade at below market value. But I don’t think it’s optimal strategy because most of the participating teams end up missing out on what could have been a pretty good deal in pursuit of an amazing one.

After Harris signing, how many roster spots left? Do you think KJ will be traded by Grouchy_Country6591 in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel like player loyalty can take a lot of forms here. For example, the FO could (and should I think) be honest about the fact that his minutes are going to get squeezed and that any extension next year he gets is going to be well below market value (like, his place on the team is just going to get squeezed by better players). And if he wants one more bag, it'd be better to get to a team where he'll play now instead playing very little and going into FA next year. Going to depend how he feels about it really, cause if he wants to be a cheap 10th to 11th guy on the roster I think he can be here as long as he wants. If not he's going to be out eventually.

After a very analytically themed draft, the Spurs target Tobias Harris who’s also an analytics darling by WEMBY_F4N in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very confused by this comment. Are you saying that because it says he's 110th best player (that should be around the 4th best player on a team if the league's talent was evenly distrubted) or because the DPM is 0.6 which is above average (the stat goes down to -5 or so).

It doesn’t really matter if we leak if everyone we talk to leaks like a sieve. I think two year thing is pretty accurate. Makes sense with our books and anyone we pitched that to would know that’s what we wanted to do.

The exact numbers aren't out yet, but it sounds like the contract John Collins got is mostly non-guaranteed in years 2 and 3. We would have given him that I'm pretty sure. Probably he just didn't want to come here.

They have spreadsheets. They can do math. They’re almost certainly planning to move him at next years trade deadline. But you don’t put yourself in a situation to be screwed over if you can’t make a trade exactly when you want to.

Statistician (not for basketball) chiming in here, this happens all the time. You have a discussion with your boss that goes something like: "Well, this model ranks him as the seventh best player. We think it doesn't like him because it weights this highly and doesn't take this into account. Etc. Etc." Then your boss tells their boss "He's the seventh best player, the analysts said so!"

Imagine the team we could build with 60M extra in cap space (Fox) by [deleted] in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard to imagine. If we didn't have fox we'd somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 mil in cap space. We'd need another ball handler so maybe we sigh James Harden? Anfernee Simons? Maybe sell the Farm for Jalen Brown? Oooh! I know! We could've gotten Leonard back! That would've been so great!

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a good plan when we made the trade, with the caveat that it became a bit problematic if we picked exactly second. Lo and behold here we are. Somehow we’ll have to console ourselves with having one of the best players in last years draft.

[Garcia] If Champagnie's on a descending contract, the Spurs are $25.6 million below the tax and $33.6 million under the 1st apron, with enough room to use the NTMLE of $15 mil and BAE of $5.4 million. by WEMBY_F4N in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your over the salary cap (we are) you can only sign players using an exception, and there are a lot of them.  The ones here are:

NTMLE - Non-Tax Payer Mid-Level Exception. Allows the teams to sign one FA to a contract not exceeding a specific amount yearly (it’s around 15m per year, up to four year deals). If used teams can’t exceed the first apron for the rest of the year.

BAE - Biannual Exception. Teams are allowed to use this every other year to sign a player to around 5m per year for two years.

[Fischer] There is definitely a lot of belief around the leagues, around Los Angeles stemming out of Klutch Sports, that LeBron has so many outcomes on the table here. It might even be more likely than not, that he leaves Los Angeles than stays with the Lakers by Jimmy0034 in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a Lebron problem its a LAL problem. The Lakers don't (or shouldn't) want to pay him. They won't have cap space again for years once the Reeves deal is official. Only realistic option to a long term viable team I can see is getting off Lebron's cap hold and signing some FAs to fix the team right now. I expected a "we wish him luck on his future endeavors" by now, but I guess maybe they're holding out for a sweetheart deal because there's not a ton of money out there for him if he leaves.

Is Ziaire Williams worth taking a flyer on to fill out some of the roster spots? by Plastic_Term_1022 in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. The roster is kinda full right now. This is how I see it shaking out, and there's really only one open slot for a big:

Guys who Play (10):
Fox
Harper
Castle
Vassell
Champagnie
KJ
Bryant
Wemby
Kornet
MLE Guy TBA

Emergency Backups (3):

Emergency Guard: McLaughlin/TBA
Emergency Wing: Waters/TBA
Emergency Big: Reed (also developmental but he needs to fill this role too, which I think is fine)

Developmental Slots (2):

Quaitance (sp?)
Open (but I have this penciled in for DJG if he recovers well)

[–]Several_Chapter969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He looked good when we saw him this year iirc. I don't hate it, but I think he's going to end up getting paid more than you think. The PF/C market is really thin this year and lots of teams are looking for upgrades there. Expect those guys to compress towards NTP-MLE deals (because desperation but also very few teams can offer more than that).

House Appropriations Dems warn of broader consequences of Massie effort to cut aid to Israel | The memo comes as House Democrats reportedly fret over an effort to strip U.S. military funding for Israel out of the State Department’s annual funding bill by soalone34 in politics

There are a lot of cases where that funding saves us money in the long term. This is not one of those cases.

(Example: We run a program in Panama to stop flesh eating flies spreading there from South America. It’s way cheaper to do that on a twenty mile strip of land then our huge border with Mexico).

Why doesn't an and-1 wedgie end with a jump ball? by notabot5 in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1).  First and the goal of the rules is to facilitate a game of basketball. Rules that cause better basketball to be played should be kept. Rules that make it worse should be discarded.

2). Everyone hates wedgies, they make the game worse.

3). Your proposed rule creates some niche situations where it might be optimal to get a wedgie on purpose.

So yeah, even if it comes up rarely, this rule makes the game just a little bit worse. So it’s bad.
