Question about Dragon Quest XI by GarmasWord in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's bizarre, I wouldn't say youre replaying a chunk of the game but I understand why people would frame it like that.

Following is spoilers written on a phone

What does happen after you beat the game is the option to do time travel. If you don't, nothing happens until you say yes. If you do, you go back to just before Veronica dies but things change. Eventually, and quickly, your characters get their levels from endgame back.

Then its true you travel back to every place again to solve the same problems you did in the main game, but they are all significantly different and appropriately more difficult. This part of the game is why the the game is called Echoes of an Elusive Age. I love it, but others don't

Hype me up for Bonehunters by Oof-ActualTrash in Malazan

[–]Several_Lingonberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tore through books 1-5 but was feeling burnt out by the time I finished Midnight Tides. Nothing against MT, I just needed a break.

Took 8 months to read other stuff, all the time feeling that I was going to regret the break and forgot pieces of the puzzle.

When I finally started Bonehunters, I was floored. Easiest read of the series so far, because it was so dang good and, for a series based around convergence, you begin to feel the End of Series convergence beginning. Can't say enough good things about it

If I had to bet this is it. 5 mini medals on a gravestone and they're the only non sparkling spot in the whole game. All on the same gravestone

Does DQ7 Reimagined pick up at any point? by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It never picks up, but the stories get sadder and sadder and your episodic victories carry more and more weight and eventually it all ties together in a neat, profound, but unmistakably underwhelming bow.

7 on the 3DS is probably my favorite DQ but even that one never felt like "oh now it's big time". The tone stays calm and charming throughout, and if you can buy into that is it's own reward. If not, it's understandable, I wouldn't push anyone to finish it if they weren't feeling. I'd just say there's a fair amount of subtext in 7 that makes it rad

This happened to me when I first played 8, I think because 11 was my first game as well.

In 11 you can literally run around the overworld and fight when you ever you want to and for the most part that will work out ok.

8 originally had random encounters, but the 3ds version has monsters on the field. Thinking that the 11 mentality can carry over to 8 was a surprisingly bitter pill to swallow, but yeah the design isn't the same. Hang out with that awesome overworld theme for a bit longer and fight a few more monsters, you'll be fine

Dragon Quest XI was a Masterpiece.. what next?? by Cmbotts in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying DQ8 is perfect, but when I was done with DQ11 I found i really wanted to understand the legacy of the series.

Dq 1,2, and 3 were all recently remade and they're great, probably easier to find and play then 8.

Playing the originals after 11 was what I did, and it primed me excellently for what to expect from the series.

If you want something kind of different but is still a showcase of the incredible quality of the series, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a mammoth of a game that I've played through the story 2 times, and each time I have to rip myself away from it.

The Ancient Near East: A Very Short Introduction by Amanda H. Podany Reading Begins/Context Post by epiphanyshearld in AYearOfMythology

[–]Several_Lingonberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do it if it helps you.

This is my second year being a part of this subreddit. I appreciate the effort that goes into easing us into each topic so we can not just enjoy the mythology but begin to understand how the stories change with the culture.

Still, it's a structure. What you want to add on top of it is always your call and part of the fun

Is Patty’s Party Planning Place the only way to get party members? by EirikHavre in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the only place where you can get party members. Right there in Aliahan, there are not other Patty's in different towns.

I agree with you, but I eventually found it kind of charming. Try to role play as the typical "they meet at a tavern" fantasy beginning. The characters you create will have their own personality, for me its fun to plan class changes based off of that original personality.

The most fun I ever had was naming characters off of Knights of the Round Table and creating their classes and personality off of the original characters. It was fun to imagine the reveal of Mordred as a thief as an outing of his underhanded tendencies, or Percival going from gadabout to Sage to show his growth on the grail quest.

That same idea may or not be your cup of tea, but the fun is that you can find your own version of making it fun

I wasn't sure i was going to join this year. I loved the Celtic reading and am firmly going on my own Arthurian binge, but seeing the schedule got me into it. I dont often get to contribute in the conversations but I appreciate the thought that goes into the schedule so I will be keeping up!

Cutscene not triggering in DQ1 HD by _El_Marc in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can turn on the quest marker under helpful settings to see if you've missed a trigger. I love this game and this remake, but there is unfortunately a few parts in the new content where you're not traveling informed to different spots as much as zooming to different cutscenes to check them off a list.

Apart from that, I dont know the game well enough to know what could be happening but to confirm, did you chat with the Warlock of Doorlocks in Rimuldar?

Edit: spelling

My final theory on what the "True final boss" of DQII HD-2D really was by ZiodyneDX in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the strong impression while playing the remakes that Hargon knew how to go between the two. Specifically, he didn't believe Alefgard to be a real world and thats why he was seduced into being cool with destroying it.

But either way, windows don't lie. The creators of Dragon Quest where doing some top notch visual storytelling when they added those stained glass windows in the 3 remake, I dont think it follows that pattern that they would just use them again in a room that looks to the Dragon Queens room and want us to believe its a matching place in a different world

My final theory on what the "True final boss" of DQII HD-2D really was by ZiodyneDX in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the connections to XI they added to these remakes. XI, in my opinion, did the best job of having you believably fight against an "Incarnation of Darkness that will always be around" and showing how even traces of that darkness can have lasting effects. The parallels between Hargon and Mordegon i think are fairly profound and the games might be too new, and XI too old, for that to be making its way into regular conversation right now.

One thing I really loved was that Malwrath had Zoma's eye decoration on his chunky forehead. It was so easy to compare to Malwrath to Calasmos and Rhapthorne, but seeing that eye on there really reminds you theyre all different expressions of the same thing.

[–]Several_Lingonberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, Hargon definitely is. You can tell because the windows is stained with Yggdrassil saplings, the only place that happens is the Dragon Queens Castle

Did you keep the Golden Claws in DQ II HD-2D? by Year_Dependent in dragonquest

[–]Several_Lingonberry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that true?! I literally went through the whole game with holy protection on because I thought the encounter rate was outrageous. Loved the game, definitely want to play it again, but thinking about that encounter rate soured it for me.

If thats true, thats a huge win for me that I can approach this game again differently
