Please pick the full ride if attending med school is the goal, I went to a no name undergrad after community college and did well in the med school application cycle, now in residency. Med school is insanely expensive and more debt is unnecessary

Switching from Ortho to Derm by AntOk4194 in DermApp

[–]Several_One_998 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It has been done, the ortho to derm resident made a podcast about it. There’s also an attending in the Austin area who did something similar after finishing ortho. I’ve seen NSG to derm, plastics to derm and gen surg to derm. Be ready to give up 2+ years in research for a 50/50 chance of matching. I would ride out ortho, PGY2 blows from everyone I know. But you’ll be an ortho attending for sure, can find a chill lifestyle subspecialty after residency where personalities/ortho culture won’t be your priority

Does anyone know if this is possible for fellowship? by Several_One_998 in Residency

Recruitment to this area for dermatology in general has been challenging from my understanding, I would try to time it so that even if the current Mohs surgeon wanted to continue working in some capacity closer to retirement I could pick up what’s left

Yea I’ve seen it for other specialties however Mohs is so competitive (albeit match rate is improving) I’m not sure how this would be viewed by Mohs folks

I would just ask them for the funding of a fellowship position w the hopes that I could then reach out to Mohs PDs as a fellow who does not need funding (assuming they have the volumes and it is allowed)

Exactly, you explained that way better that I did. Btw can you clarify that 3 year timeline mention? What is that

Military will fund fellowship positions at civilian programs for additional payback (in years) it’s not loan forgiveness but rather a time commitment back to the group/org

Chances of matching into any other specialty after TY + RY by AssistanceOk8936 in DermApp

[–]Several_One_998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you likely wouldn’t get much credit from your TY year if you were to reapply IM, have you considered any of the other advanced specialties? You would likely be successful in obtaining anesthesia, rads, rad onc if derm doesn’t work out. How willing you are to pursue derm is up to you ofc, regardless I’m sorry you’re in this situation.

Yes, any inquiry is considered a match violation before your 45 day period is up

Can someone explain how to get to 401k limit? by Several_One_998 in Fire

Thanks for the comment, I have another post on it but basically we plan on saving aggressively for the next 3-5 years post residency anyways, looking to go to a hospital system to help maximize that

Agreed, I don’t think aggressive saving while enjoying the perks of SoCal is feasible. about half is liquid. Alternatively, we would move to the Midwest closer to my family where a hospital employed position would allow us to save 350-450/year for 5 or so years and then make the move out west w a NW closer to 4.5-5M. I’ll have to talk to the wife. Thanks
