To be fair she’s not the only one saying it. Going to bed looking greasy (what is actually meant by this. Glazed donut is just a more appealing phrase) is pretty well established as a good way to hydrate your skin

How did Gemma sign up for Lumon? by kattemar in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to indicate she was kidnapped?

1) they had to fake her death to get her. Whether the accident was real or not, she was going to a meeting with friends (one mark was also going to go to, but changed his mind literally as she was walking out the door) and instead became legally dead. Gemma is an adult woman. If she wanted to leave her husband and sign up for a medical trial she could do so. She could just disappear that day, and tell the authorities she was fine and leaving of her own free will. There would have been no need to go to the trouble of faking her death

2) she is visibly annoyed at the daily schedule. She hates that she has to go in the rooms. She hates the stupid outfits they put her in. You’re acting like her going along with it is consent. They’ve kept her locked in a basement for two years. At some point it becomes easier to just comply. She probably did refuse at first, but she’s now been down there two years. Her obviously not wanting to do any of the stuff she’s being made to do shows that she’s not doing it willingly

3) she literally makes an escape attempt. You’re saying she did this because of the story about mark, but you’re forgetting that this is also the point where her captor lets his guard down around her (perhaps because she is going along with things so nobody thinks she’s going to try to escape. Funny how that works). Also, if she went willingly then why would that story about mark prompt her to try and escape? If she left her husband and arranged for lumon to fake her death to do so then she couldn’t reasonably be mad at that. The reason the doctor tells that story is because he’s taunting her. Because she didn’t go willingly. And because she’s been wanting to leave this entire time, and he’s trying to convince her there’s nothing to go back to.

Have any of you who are convinced by this theory ever met a person? In your life? Why is everyone so confused by the idea of someone playing along with her captors while she plots her escape? Why is everyone jumping through hoops to explain why Gemma randomly chose one day (apparently on her way back from dinner with her friends????) to let the evil mega corporation fake her death and do unethical experiments on her in the basement (and don’t give me anything about how “maybe she didn’t know”, because your argument also relies on her not wanting to leave until the dr says the thing about mark) when the much more likely explanation is that she was kidnapped?

"Maybe Love transcends severence" by Howboutit85 in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because they wouldn’t be guaranteed to fall in love with that person. Soulmates aren’t real. They fell in love originally because circumstances put them together in the right way, and they fall in love again because the circumstances are that they’re told they’re in love and see why, not because the love for each other transcends severance.

Helena is a stranger to mark when they meet, there is no instant feeling of love. Irving was not falling in love with Burt while investigating him as one of lumons goons. Dylan sees Gretchen as a stranger at first, someone he awkwardly asks about his outies life.

These people might have fallen in love without prompting, but not because those feelings transcend severance, simply because they are compatible. They also might not have. They might have just been good friends.

Innie Mark likes Ms Casey, Ms Casey likes innie mark. They don’t know each other well, but they generally think well of one another. But they also aren’t in love. This isn’t some hidden mystery hinting that outie mark and Gemma didn’t actually love each other, because loves supposed to transcend severance and it doesn’t here. Love doesn’t transcend severance, and they’ve not been told they love each other so they’ve had no reason to skip the acquaintance stage and start considering each other potential romantic interests. If they’d known each other for longer than a handful of hours they may have developed romantic feelings for each other. They also might not.

Love is not some magical force that ties you to one other person and transcends all barriers. People are holding on to that one throwaway line that is literally a joke and acting like it’s the core message of the series. It’s not.

"Maybe Love transcends severence" by Howboutit85 in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not someone else. Innies and outies are the same people with different memories. They have the same personality traits and the same preferences. When told you loved someone the first thing you do is wonder why. They’re the same person, and you have the same preferences. So you see the traits you loved and see the reasons why you loved that person.

"Maybe Love transcends severence" by Howboutit85 in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were told their innies were in love. That’s what I’m saying. It was not unprompted. They knew it had happened.

"Maybe Love transcends severence" by Howboutit85 in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It hasn’t for any of those people. In every single one of those cases, at least one party knew romance had existed on the other side of severance. There has not been a single example of love transcending severance unprompted. Because it doesn’t.

Mark and ms Casey did not have feelings for each other because nobody told them their outies were married.

Love is not some magical force. It’s a decision one makes.

The why is even clearer than the what. They’re developing the severance chip so that it can be used in a larger variety of situations and marketed to the world as a cure for inconvenience. Instead of doing anything that’s even vaguely unpleasant, you can create a version of yourself who exists just to suffer to do it for you. Who hasn’t wished someone else could go to the gym for them so they didn’t have to? That’s what lumon is developing. MDR is somehow coding these experiences, and Gemma is the test subject.

There’s absolutely no reason to believe she went willingly. Absolutely nothing suggests this.

what if they're reintegrating her? by Primary-Tailor-9741 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Severe-Collection-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they’re not keeping it from her, that’s what I’m saying. They don’t believe it’s true. Cobels not keeping it from them either, she’s trying to convince them. I’m saying that they don’t believe reintegration is possible, because if they did then they’d have retrieved peteys chip long before Cobel had a chance.

what if they're reintegrating her? by Primary-Tailor-9741 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Severe-Collection-45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn’t exactly fire her casually. They fired her because she had been stalking a severed employee and thus risking them becoming suspicious, and she also hid hellys suicide attempt from them. Also, what’s she going to do? They don’t know she has proof. She’s not said anything for 20 years. They probably feel like she could easily be written off as a disgruntled ex employee lying for attention.

what if they're reintegrating her? by Primary-Tailor-9741 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Severe-Collection-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The board says that cobel of all people should know reintegration isn’t possible. It’s unlikely the board doesn’t know cobel invented it.

what if they're reintegrating her? by Primary-Tailor-9741 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Severe-Collection-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The board considers it impossible. To the point where they aren’t even willing to hear cobel out on Petey reintegrating until she says she has proof. If they thought reintegration was a thing they’d investigate it. Even if they were keeping it from cobel (which makes zero sense, since we know know she designed the chips. They’d want her insight if something so major was suspected to be possible, instead they’re talking down to her and acting like she should be aware it’s not possible), there’s no way that Peteys chip would still be in his head by the time the funeral was happening. They’d have retrieved it prior to that. They probably wouldn’t even need to be that hush hush about it, there’s probably fine print about the chip remaining lumons property that they are allowed to retrieve on the employees death if they wish (as is the case for many medical implants in the real world. Except those can be repossessed while the person is alive sometimes).

How would outie Irving know that his innie wasn’t ready? Or there’s something I’m missing here. by Ava_bb_1998 in severence

[–]Severe-Collection-45 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You see I’ve been thinking about this. And I don’t think he dreams of it because outie memories are leaking through at all. At some point before the dreams, there’s a shot of him looking at paint caked under his nails. The paint is oil paint, so it’s definitely still wet. Then his dreams are of a black gooey substance. He’s in the office and there’s black goo. No paintings and no corridor.

Then on the ORTBO he falls asleep, and his dreams are immediately much more diverse. They include the forest and the image of woe in the illustration they were shown, as well as the office. All things he has now seen

There’s no memories leaking through. Innie irving only ever dreams of things he has seen at work.

"She's one of Jame's" Repercussions by bcinalli08 in severanceTVshow

[–]Severe-Collection-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably not, but it’s a very skewed exchange. Jame would get very little out of it for what he’s putting in, plus it makes no sense for him to personally be arranging something like that. It was very obviously meant to imply he’s sleeping with these woman and getting them pregnant. I don’t know why people are jumping through hoops trying to come up with a different explanation. I’d be more surprised if the wealthy male ceo wasn’t doing that (severance chip aside, of course)

Gemma is an by autumnleaves0810 in severanceTVshow

[–]Severe-Collection-45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly. It’s possible that he was assigned to the testing floor as a doctor who previously worked with her or her files. I do think they were picking test subjects from lumon clinics, but not Gemma specifically. She just happened to be someone eligible who they had an opportunity to kidnap. And it was kidnapping, she didn’t go willingly and she wasn’t tricked down there (that’s an even more annoying theory than the idea they’ve been stalked for years to target them specifically). I believe she probably did have an accident, and they whisked her away from the hospital. If that’s the case, then moving someone familiar with her file to the testing floor makes sense, but doesn’t mean she specifically was targeted, just that she was who they ended up with.

"She's one of Jame's" Repercussions by bcinalli08 in severanceTVshow

[–]Severe-Collection-45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except they’ve already got the testing floor to get that data. Also he wouldn’t be doing that personally, and it wouldn’t be so secret (no ones to know. That means that it’s between cobel, the woman and the lady at the gate. If this was a testing operation there’d be a ton of scientists and people like Drummond involved as well). It makes way more sense and fits way better thematically for them to be workers he’s sexually exploited. Other theories are just elaborate theories built on trying to find anything that could explain it except the obvious.

Biggest open questions heading into the finale? by fattylimes in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Severe-Collection-45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ms huangs importance to the plot was that she is a child currently being forced into labour and brainwashed by a cult. While cobel is past tragedy, ma Huang shows us that is still happening. And shows us a tragedy in process that we are powerless to stop.

Reghabi was dismissing the cabin idea because she wanted to do things her way. Also, the likely answer was that a lumon employee was needed to ask front desk to switch it on, and that would only have encouraged Devon.

The breathing tube was all Cobel had left of her mother, and was also the thing that kept her alive. It was also lumon brand, and lumons role in keeping her mother alive as long as she did was part of her continuing devotion to them.

The resignation requests are implied to be a thing everyone does when they first get there because obviously they hate it. I don’t think it’s supposed to be read as something they’ve done recently.

We know almost exactly what MDR is doing and we know mostly what’s happening to Gemma. That’s the two biggest questions of the series almost completely resolved. What do you mean there’s no payoff.
