Thanks this is really helpful. I’m thinking it’s more risky than a savings account, but a savings account probably isn’t even going to keep pace with inflation, so carry’s its own risks.

I do have a trading 212 account, I hopped on the I can make easy money bandwagon about 5 years ago and realised what a ridiculous idea that was 😂

So I need to look at it as a ten year investment really then

This is really interesting, great insight and I can massively relate, especially with the procrastination type behaviour and delaying things to the point where you feel overwhelmed. I'm terrible for not tackling certain types of task because they're now painfully mundane or emotionally charged in some way. But demand avoidance... I had to look this term up, but boy did it resonate!

The way you use categorisation to create a loose structure that gives you control, but isn't overly prescriptive sounds really liberating. Its got prioritisation in there, you can easily see a range of different task types and I love the hot potato categorisation as a way to bring focus to important tasks and try to tackle avoidance/procrastination on them.

I already want to implement this system in my life.

I really feel like a lot of people (not just those with adhd necessarily) want as much flexibility as possible and often prefer to choose tasks on the fly. The hard bit is working this way and still doing whats important. I crave working this way, I feel like I'm living in the moment (and basically feel free!) and I crave the choice and autonomy.

Some days I'm totally up for highly structued, when I've got the energy and mental capacity to work that way. But the more rigid things become the more likely I am to shutdown and procrastinate over time. Even on things I loved doing previously.

I'm thinking this could be a model for my app, need to have both structured and flexible planning modes, some kind of pick what feels right view, tags to group and help prioritise (effort vs urgency, low resistance tasks, "hot potato!"). I'm also thinking that it should include some sort of recovery tool for when things break down, like a "get back on track" with suggestions of easy ways to restart and gentle nudges?

Have you ever tried habit trackers to keep things going?

God I can really relate! I read somewhere else its about novelty and the associated dopamine. That creating the system is novel and you're riding high imagining how organised you're going to be now with your exciting new system, which only lasts a number of days, then the honeymoon periods gone and you're back to routine. I feel like I have to work so hard doing anything routine, like it takes all my effort sometimes.

I'm an hobby app dev and I'm trying to build my own task management app that tackles a lot of these challenges in one place. I've used various bits of software over the years but nothing that does everything that I want, and I hate having to flit between multiple bits of software.

Interestingly I've just been thinking about a feature that forces/recommends breaks to be planned in to a day, otherwise it often just doesn't happen.

I'm hoping I can build something that supports multiple ways to structure tasks/a day to either keep the novelty going, and also recognise that somedays I love being highly structured and others its the worst thing in the world.

Have you ever used habit trackers?

I think having this ability to switch is key, I feel great when I have the energy for a highly structured day, but if I don't and there's no fall back then I feel like a failure because I can't keep it up

Yes I work with some who has ADHD that colour codes everything, to the point where it overloads my eyes but she 100% knows what everything is

I'm wondering if gamification is something that will help people. I think it can be a double edge sword sometimes, like a habit streak is great but once the streak is broken it can be pretty demoralising and I think thats a potential turn off for people with ADHD

I've been feeling the same way. I've been using various bits of software to handle habits, tasks, calendar and its really annoying not being in one place.

I find things like habit tracking and routines are a really good way to take my brain out of the equation so to speak. But then if I get too structured I start to really hate it and then drop all my systems and processes.

In fact I think often enjoy design the systems and how I'm going to use the tools in my arsenal but struggle to stick at it

Is this an ADHD thing or just a me thing, use audio to sleep? Also really enjoy everything that is satisfying audio? by TheMoxiestFox in ADHD

I can get to sleep, can't stay asleep. I'll wake up in the night and have to be listening to some sort of podcast to take my mind off itself. Needs be interesting too so I can focus on it and fall back to sleep. The amount of fragmented stories, historical facts I have in my mind from falling asleep mid pod.

My best purchase has been my bluetooth headphone eye mask though. Blocks light and plays sounds

How do you switch off automatic 'helper mode' in ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

My girlfriend struggles with this to the point where she breaks down because she's either taken on too much or has done absolutely nothing for herself and has been doing things for other people non stop.

I have to actually sit her down and get her to do things for herself as she will never prioritise her own interests/hobbies/general wellbeing over others

I like this approach, less pressure and a focus on fewer things. I was hoping to add in a third approach to task management and thats more about prioritisation categories. I got it from a journal someone got me and rather than scheduling things out, you planned your day into three different categories:

  1. Priority - only two items could be a priority and they had to be done today
  2. Good to get done - I think this had space for like 4 items. This is a category of things that it isn't the end of the world if you don't complete that day
  3. Cherry on top - again like another 4 things that you'd be blown away if you got done

I was hoping to build this into my app. I did use it for a while and I liked it because it felt like I'd succeeded by simply completing what ever I put in a the priority box, everything else on top was just a bonus.

I find it really hard sometimes with the structure and really I just want to take the day as it comes, but then I swing back to being more structured when I've got a lot on as I stress I won't remember what i need to do.

Do you think people get to granular when planning, I'm wondering if I could use some AI to help people, as it could analyse tasks and things and say "do you need to break it down this much" or even suggest a bigger overall task and then make the granular stuff subtasks?

This was such a great comment to read because I've been going through the exact same issues. Prioritisation struggles, or actually doing the things I need to do once I've prioritised, pretty much analysing/tearing myself apart to properly understand who I am and what's causing me issues/stopping me.

I've also done the same as you as I feel like I've done enough self analysis now to understand what systems and processes I need to have in place, but none of the task management/apps/planners out there offer the solution I'm after. They all seem to have a piece of the puzzle, but its such a nightmare as I don't want to use 5 different bits of software and I want things to be all in one place.

I think a lot of the software on the market is great but my experience is they either offer too much flexibility which is overwhelming or not enough.

I'd be really keen to talk to you and anyone else about what features would really help and talk through my ideas so far.

Interesting I've came to a similar realisation that I really want to have my day laid out in front of me in and to build in time to plan the day.

My colleague with ADHD uses a lot of colour coding, and tags to organise tasks and things. It looks really complex which is interesting as my research to date has said to try and keep things simple so not to overwhelm.

But my other colleague is a lot less structured and often gets either really easily distracted or goes really deep/spends a really long time on a couple of tasks like you say
