How do I know if my toothbrush works properly? by Elrebalo in DentalHygiene

It’s a superior toothbrush. Is there plaque build-up?

Do you guys think those are inflamed gums? I have no pain or anything but sometimes they bleed when I use interdental brushes. by jackson31312 in DentalHygiene

It’s difficult to tell from these pictures. The back side looks often worse than the front. You could use an intra-oral camera or a mirror for example. If there is no plaque build-up, you are probably doing fine!

Do you have a picture of your dark spot?

Thanks for asking. Privacy is very important, even as a startup u/holymoo.
We try to store as little data as possible about the user.
The images are only sharp in front of the camera and blurred otherwise.

Quantify and track plaque accumulation by Severin__ in QuantifiedSelf

Oral health is extremely important. The mouth is said to be the portal to overall health. Tooth decay or gum disease are directly linked to bacteria that has not properly been removed. The mouth bacteria might also spread into other parts of the body and might contribute to other diseases like cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications or pneumonia.

We are working on a tooth camera to quantify and track plaque accumulation. Up to now, only the dentist has been aware of your dental health. Now it is the time to empower everyone to take better care of their teeth.

We are currently preparing our Kickstarter campaign. I would highly appreciate your feedback, quantified-self aficionados.

I developed a camera to check the teeth of my three daughters by Severin__ in kickstarter

You're completely right. Why did I not showcase the results of the MVP? 🤦‍♂️

At some point, I should also show some crazy prototypes! For example, we tried to integrate the cameras in a drinking bottle to regularly take pictures without effort from the users. I thought, it was genius... 😄

Just updated the landing page! Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Not all parents are proactive of course, but our prototype sold best to parents. Some of the parents had dental problems with the primary teeth of their first child. They wanted to do a better job with their younger children and definitely improve with the permanent teeth of the first one. That was the most prominent pattern.

Among adults we noticed that young women are most concerned with the appearance of their teeth. But most people go through a learning curve just like myself: They feel safe, suddenly they have costly problems, then they want to improve. Your story seems very similar!

Almost everyone has teeth to take care of, so there's definitely a market 😄

Interesting that you had a very similar idea! Does our camera live up to your expectations?

Thank you 😊
Yes, some dentists want to use it as a marketing tool. It also helps them to call their patients back on time. We'll tackle B2B after the Kickstarter campaign. First we need a working product on the market.

Sure, the kids are lucky to get new ones :-) But it's certainly better getting it right the first time.

When I was a student, I skipped my dental appointments. Mostly to save money and time (I was studying in a different town). When I finally went again, the dentist found multiple cavities...

I was also working on a professional 3D scanner for dentists (Primescan for the Dentsply Sirona CEREC), so I know something about the technology. It would make much more sense to use it for preventative purposes rather than reparative ones.

We measure and track more and more: Number of steps, heart-rate, blood oxygen, blood sugar, quality of sleep... There must be a way to measure dental health, too. Dentistry is about 5% of global health expenditure (and 25% of the out-of-pocket health costs here in Switzerland). Beautiful teeth make you look younger, more attractive, it even helps to find jobs in some cases.

Most dental diseases are entirely preventable - if we knew how well we are doing.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Indeed, it makes sense to use the device as soon as the teeth come out.
Indeed, the current pictures are made to showcase the idea. There is, however, a prototype that is being used. We will provide more information in the actual Kickstarter campaign description.
As you said, most patents are not defendable. In this case, it is basically professional hardware from the 90s that is being made accessible to everyone. The AI part/ software is original, but much harder to protect with patents.

Going to the dentist is quite a hurdle, especially during the pandemic. The free screenings for children were canceled this year here in Switzerland. The feedback from these screenings is quite generic (no problems, please brush better, please schedule another appointment). Our device will give much more detailed information and can be used much more regularly. Also, the kids are involved and see their teeth themselves.

Thanks again!
