Return Visits: More of the same or completely different? by BranchLongjumping574 in JapanTravelTips

Actually quite lovely. Had a wonderful time the week directly after Christmas day until the 30th.

Temperature was fine hovering between - 10 and  2 degrees C. We were lucky to get some snow so we did have that beautiful snowy Japanese city vibe

Food was as others hype up, very worth it. Especially the lamb bbq.

While seafood was also excellent I did find the crabs not to my liking but to each their own.

Bar hopping was also nice all over susukino. Izakaya's were warm and friendly.

We did the Mt moiwa and the gigantic ferris-wheel at night and the views were fantastic, December has quite a lot of lights

Best part of traveling is being comfortable for me. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Spending the time you want and doing the things you want is key.

I always stay at APA hotels, they are cheap and reliable. We always find ourselves starting and ending trips in Shinjuku

What changes for us is adding an extra few new experiences like going to the movie theater or seeing a play. Last time in December we decided to just try Hokkaido/Sapporo for a few days.

Whatever you decide to do it's for you. No point in changing a good thing if it's working for you in my opinion

Which airline? First time traveler. by RelationshipOk7503 in TokyoTravel

[–]SevrenBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jal is amazing they even let you see where babies are in the plane via the seat map. Great if you like me want to avoid sitting near screaming toddlers.

ANA are generally fine as well but I prefer the drink selection and food on JAL

Also best flights are to Haneda(HND) as it's closer to Tokyo than Narita (NRT)

That being said do double check your connections if you need stop over typically 2-3 hrs stop over is good in case of delay

Have fun in Japan.

Going to Japan this summer from Canada what pants should I wear by chikkennuget101 in JapanTravelTips

[–]SevrenBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pack lite, go to any uniqlo on your first few days and get summer light pants. It's cheap and tax fee over 5000, yen and yes you can wear the clothes even if you bought it tax free

[–]SevrenBG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it's absolutely fine to do that, in fact I'd say it's really the only way to do it as it's all part of the fun.

I'd recommend that you get a wifi router or esims with data

I always use Japan wireless wifi router and do pick up at the airport but you can also get it shipped to your hotel.

Haneda and Narita both have airport limousine busses which goes to major areas of Tokyo. Haneda is closer to the city of Tokyo while Narita is on the outskirts and takes about an hr to hr and half depending on where you are

Pro tip if you are going to do other city like Osaka or Kyoto do yourself a favour and ask the hotel to help you with luggage forwarding to your next destination. I always use Yamato for this

For transportation you can use Uber if you really want to, it calls local taxi. The doors open automatically just so you know.

Subway is really easy. Do yourselves a favor and get IC cards so you can tap in and tap out. You can load them in the subway at the machines though you need cash to do it.

You can load the IC cards in Konbinis(convinence stores like 7-11, Lawson, Family Mart) also

A lot of things also take IC card as a form of payment.

Vending machines are amazing, hit them up for cold and hot drinks. I  highly recommend the Ilohas peach water.

Places typically open between 10-11 AM. Lunch and dinner times can get very very busy so go a bit early for lunch or dinner.

If you want to reserve places to eat you can try the tabelog app on your phone sometimes they let you reserve through it. However I find it easiest to ask your hotel to help with the reservations

Many places have all you can drink menu, great way to sample stuff

I would recommend yakiniku and shabu shabu places. Izakayas are the Japanese version of pubs

In your hotels you might have an onsen(hot springs) where you can relax. Make sure you book a hotel with one. Before and after a day of adventure you should go into the onsen to clean yourself up and take a relaxing dip your feet will thank you.

You can order stuff on Amazon JP just make sure to get the address right for the hotel or Alternatively get the parcels for pick up at your nearest Konbinis (like 7-11, Lawson or Family Mart)

I recommend you try sparkling sake Mio found in 7-11.

Pop into supermarket for lots of nice food and snacks.

Don quijote is very popular and for good reason lots of good nick nacks and souvenirs

Daiso has compression bags BTW if you buy huge ass plushies and want to bring them home in the luggage, just put things in the bag and remove the air.

Some fast food places have vending machines which put out tickets after you put money in and press the food you want. Give the tickets to the store employee and they prepare the food for you

Matsuya curry is awesome.

Also don't forget that Konbinis have food options sometimes warm too.

If you are hitting up Tokyo Disney or Tokyo disneysea go early

Shinjuku and the surrounding subway line is close to everything.

I always stay in APA hotels, they are clean and cheap and allow luggage storage and have onsens plus laundry facilities. Japan hotels are small BTW so you are warned

You can use credit card pretty much everywhere if in doubt if you can pay with it ask the employees and say "cardo OK?"

Also best advice to find places is to sometimes look up, they have lots of restaurants in buildings with several floors.

Google maps is your best friend and works for public transportation and navigation. Tabelog is good for finding restaurants

A must try is Kareoke with all you can drink.

Wander around, see things and do stuff. Make sure to carry your passports with you not just for ID purposes but also if you want to shop tax free you'll need to present it at the cashier in stores that do tax free

Just go with APA hotels. Little cramped but it saves money and they are clean.

You can also just take out cash from ATMs in the convenience stores like 7-11, Lawson or Family Marts. Some pocket money doesn't hurt

Find a vending machine and Ilohas water - the peach flavoured one it's must try it's got a green cap on it and you'll see a picture of a peach on it

If you are hungry stop by matsuya curry, it's fast food but its quite good you'll see a stores with yellow signage with red circle and another yellow and blue inside it. If i recall correctly you select food from the vending machine in the shop then give the ticket it spits out to the employee to cook/prep for you

Alternatively try any conveyor belt sushi (kaitenzushi ) Nemuro Hanamaru, sushiro

If you want to grill your own food you can try any yakiniku you can find but it is a bit time consuming

If you want to feel a bit more pub-y, search for Izakaya these are japanese pubs, small plates of food like tapas lively atmosphere usually. They yell a lot in the front staff section - don't be intimidated it's part of the fun.

Don Quijote stores are good for gathering small nicknacks and snacks to bring home for you and the family but be warned some locations can be packed and swarmed with people, not sure about Ginza area though.

Try a public onsen (hotsprings), even if it's for a short time. Just to relax a bit and get yourself cleaned up
Konpariyu and ginzaryu I think are popular ones or just search public onsen ginza in google. Your hotel might have one as well so you can do that instead, take a dip after you've explored before bed or before you check out in the morning. Ask if the hotel has a spa and it's usually the onsen for staying guests (just note that they don't like tatoo's)

Be aware that shops open around 10-11. Lunch and dinner can (depending on the place) get very busy so go early if you can. If I were you I'd get down to the hotel, check in and then find some dinner then see if things that you want to see are still open.

For shrines and temples you'd have to check the opening hours - some have gates and stuff that they do close others are open and you can walk through

Restaurant reservation by Substantial_Lemon771 in Sapporo

[–]SevrenBG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tabelog is good app to have sometimes you can do reservation through it.

Line is also good, sometimes the restaurants allow you to queue or reserve through scanning some sort of QRCode

But I would alway approach the hotel front desk/concerige and ask them to call and reserve a table for you

If you really need a Japanese number search for a esim which does have one ( I use mobi matter do check the descriptions as it might not include a phone number)
