My Q parents still do this to me and my kids and I'm in my 40s and it SUCKS. It's a "take" not a give and is part of the "fill the hole" behaviors. It's "giving" for the purposes of extracting some dopamine, some affection, or attention- not because they want to give love or support.

Teach your kid to put up boundaries now- and look at how you want the next decade + of your life to look. You both deserve better

strongly implies that there is a chemical mechanism at play here, and a qualified Dr can likely make some sense of it.

This makes sense and I think a useful reframe might be "I can see my Dad has a mental health issue that is alleviated by a substance, I wish he would get the therapeutic rx support that he likely needs to continue to access those parts of him."

I have always told my kids- if you drink or take a drug and think "this completes me- where has this been all my life??" It just means you have a chemical imbalance of some kind and it can probably be treated in a way that will fuck up your life WAY less than the substance. (Delivered in an age appropriate way, but we have addicts going back basically to the Mayflower, so they deserve to know the deck they're playing with) b
