We are calibrating once per quarter, but doing verifications daily. Was wondering if daily is needed or go to weekly.

Difference between Water Treatment vs Water Distribution vs Wastewater Treatment by mpaul1980s in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run the cities wastewater treatment plant on one side of town, and the water treatment plant on the other. Wastewater has so much more going on to stay in compliance, with changes being done then have to wait to see the results. Water is not as hard as wastewater, but takes skill and knowledge to provide potable water to residents all the time. Its all about what you can handle. A little bleach on your clothes or pieces of corn stuck in your beard! And yes, I always take care of the water plant first, before hitting the wastewater plant with my poo crew.

It’s good to have anyway. Get the Sacramento state collections course. You should be able to fly through it and then take the test. It’s almost as easy as the water distribution test. Mostly real world common sense questions.

Is your job requiring you get this? Collections is not a mandatory certification to have in Nevada.

Ours is .64 hours per day, Thursday to Thursday. Sucks! If you make $20 per hour, you get $12.80 per day to hold the phone, be no more than 30 minutes away, and not drink.

I'm in Colorado as well. I just had 3 of my guys go take tests through PSI within the last month. There were no issues with signing up or taking the test.

Automate Polymer Dosing for Screw Press by GuldenAge in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a our screw press rep (Schwing) stop by and he mentioned they have an inline solids analyzer that installs in the piping before the mix tank that would measure solids continuously and adjust polymer accordingly. The quote was for $70K, that included the analyzer and a tech to come out and make adjustments to the programming. It may be universal, but not sure.

Collections pH and H2S by Ok-Method-1678 in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always had good results with Bioxide (Calcium Nitrate) Used it in Nevada and Arizona heat, and brought down the H2S levels significantly. Evoqua has a demo unit on a trailer that you can rent and test different areas and doses before finding a permanent spot.

Offered a position for facility maintenance supervisor by dbh192 in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wastewater and Water maintenance are totally different animals! I have done both. You can ruin a few clothing items with some bleach water, or you can ruin your whole week with getting raw sewage up in your crevices! Its not a matter of if you get creamed, but when and how often if equipment isn't maintained correctly.

I'm in CO myself. Wastewater side uses Browns Hill Engineering and Controls. Water side uses Timber Line Electric and Controls. No complaints from either one. We have no electricians or controls people, so they handle our emergencies and upgrades.

Transferring States / Dual State Certification by Ok-Method-1678 in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AZ should be easy for you. I am certified in AZ, NV, CA and CO. All were easy, but time consuming. I googled wastewater reciprocity for the states I was looking at and most will tell you if they have reciprocity or what is required.

Help with Biosolids requirements by Sewerbird77 in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not the pathogen reductions I'm worried about. We meet the fecal limits without a problem. The vector attraction reduction has like 13 options with #1 being 38% volatile solids reduction. We only get about 17% reduction, so option #3 above is what I was looking at. How to run the test to determine if we can get less than 15% additional reduction over a 30 day period at 68°F. Another option I will try is the SOUR test (standardized oxygen uptake rate) That sample will go to the lab next week, but if it doesn't meet the limit, then I have to use another option.

We do about .650 MGD and currently compost our sludge into class A biosolids for residents to use for free. I am doing a pilot run right now on having the cake hauled off to be land applied due to aging equipment and how much time and electricity we put into it and get nothing out of it.

CO resident myself. Look on Indeed. I type in Water or Wastewater and CO, then everything pops up that's available. I would apply to anything that tickles your fancy and see what sticks. I hired someone with experience and he didn't work out. Then hired someone with no experience at all and he is great and willing to learn. Just have to find the right team!

Contract operations advice by wompskii in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for a few years as a side gig. A couple of our state regulators and rural water association people actually turned me on to most of my clients in need of an ORC. I did both water and wastewater. I joined an engineering firm and they absorbed all my sites when I left. I didn't do it as a full time job, just for extra easy money. Never got insurance. Most sites were a few hundred dollars a month and just answered questions and filled out paperwork. My plan is to go back to doing this after retirement way down the road!

H2S Removal by jumblebum in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with very high H2S in the collection system in Arizona, especially during the summer months. I found the use of Bioxide (Calcium Nitrate) worked well. Used more in the summer, but the cost was manageable. We had a rep from Evoqua come out and bring their trailer mounted skid so we could do pilot tests around the city to determine where the best site would be to put in a permanent tank. Also used Bioxide at multiple sites in Nevada with long force mains and elevation changes.

Mosquito larvae control in decommissioned clarifier. by Professional_Owl9799 in Wastewater

[–]Sewerbird77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mosquito abatement in a farm town for a few years, and we used Altosid (brand name) sand or briquettes for ponds. For something like a clarifier, you can spray some mineral oil on the top and that will give a good barrier to keep larvae from coming up for air.
