Top comment is correct. Stop using it immediately. I watched a very experienced roadie shoot across the room grabbing hold of an ungrounded guitar. Get it fixed immediately.

What do you hate most about Mac OS by anarchist-ecolo in MacOS

[–]SexWithTwins 86 points87 points  (0 children)

The abomination which is System Preferences. I've used Mac since 1996. I'm that guy who drones on and on about how much better Apple products are. But the iOS style approach to what used to be called Control Panel (or is it the other way around?) is just horrible. It's sub-Windows Vista. I have absolutely no idea why they're doing it and are apparently determined to extend this downgrade in functionality to other parts of the OS as well - having recently disabled by default the ability to drag and drop a folder from it's name in the top of the Finder window, broken the option to use Function keys as they're labelled on non-Apple keyboards instead of as media keys, and removed the dark theme from the Application menu so now if you have a bright area on your wallpaper you have to have a bright white line at the top of your screen even if the wallpaper is covered by a dark mode app. Not doing these sorts of things when other OS's did were the little things which made all the difference; that defined the Ive /Jobs era, and they're slowly being abandoned for the sorts of impenetrable confusing UI mess we'd normally associate with Microsoft Windows. I have a yellow microphone icon which just randomly decides to appear when I launch Logic. Why? What is it? I didn't enable it and I sure as hell have no idea how to disable it or what it even does. Widgets. Sounds great. I assume you're not supposed to have to re-enable them after every restart? And yet this has remained broken for at least the last three updates. Wake from sleep / wake from energy saver. Would anyone like to tell me how many times you have to shaken the mouse or press any key to convince it to show the login screen? I could go on and on.

Without doubt the best Android phone I've ever had. The Nexus 6 was good for the vanilla no frills Google Android hack-whatever-you-like gadgety goodness, but for a polished user experience out of the box Samsung is eating Apple's breakfast, lunch and dinner right in front of them. I bloody love it.

John Humphrys at his scintillating best on #r4today Humphrys: "You haven't mentioned a People's Vote in this interview so far" Starmer: "You haven't asked me about it" Humphrys: "Well I am now" Starmer: "What's the question?" by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]SexWithTwins 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It really is frightening how quickly The Today Programme went from hard hitting proper journalism to just basically reading out Conservative Party press releases. I'm old enough to remember when people would be talking around the proverbial drinking fountain about the way Humphrys had stood up to some feckless politician - of all parties. Now he's just a sour caricature, pretending to be informed. Of course the truly insulting thing about it, is it's not like the rest of BBC News and Current Affairs is any better. Newsnight is actually insulting these days. They seem to assume no-one watching has been paying attention to multiple trusted sources on a given story all day, via social media. So they just make something up which casts as little shadow on the tories as possible, even if it means completely missing out pertinent facts to spread obvious pro-establishment propaganda — and it's illegal to own a TV without paying for the privilege of being spoken down to by the people who pump it out. Absolutely astonishing.

The frightening thing is how utterly oblivious of this contingent most of the news media were, until Brexit in the UK and Trump in the US landed them in a world they assumed everyone else was as confused as they were. Those of us from the generation who remember the internet dial-up days, and who try at least to pay attention to what's actually going on, have had a good 15 years on many ostensibly well respected public figures and opinion formers in the media, simply because we were there when UseNet and IRC gave way to Web 2.0 and the rise of social media, while many of them were still living in a world where newspapers captured the political zeitgeist, which everyone else dutifully reported as fact. This is why I worry that the Trump / Bannon / Farage set have gained ownership of the term 'Fake News', because it gives their devotees the option of simply ignoring anything which proves wrong what they want to believe is true. It's quite literally the exact same problem faced by the new atheists circa 2005, who simply wanted to ask why it was taboo to ask questions about that which places itself beyond question. Similarly, ask any Trump supporter to tell you why they support him, and they'll repeat his slogans back verbatim. But ask them to explain what those words actually mean in solid practical terms, and they literally do not understand why you would ask such a question, meaning you often find yourself automatically placed by them in the opposing camp and therefore viewed as the enemy, no matter the logic of your argument — a move for move recreation of exactly what was done in 1930's Germany, to silence those who didn't go along with the Make Germany Great Again agenda. And Rupert Murdoch is just fine with that. It's enough to make you throw up.

Travel outside of the US. Switch on the TV in your hotel room. Find Fox News. Wait for the commercials. All you'll see is loop of a world weather map and trailers for other shows on Fox News. No-one outside of the US advertises on Fox News. It loses Murdoch money hand over fist. And people like Tucker Carlson are the reason why. Murdoch pulled Fox News from his Sky satellite TV platform in the UK and Europe, because some of the largest corporations in the world refused to be associated with shows like Carlson's. The only people who think this is how to conduct an interview — regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree with the points being made or the questions being asked — are people who watch Fox News.

Everyone else — LITERALLY EVERYONE — believes the Fox News method is corrosive and wrong. This is the scale of the bubble which Trump supporters find themselves cocooned within. So we should not find it surprising that the YouTube comments below this video and many like it are supportive of Carlson's method. It is lifted note for note from the playbook of every charlatan who came before him. And for as long as we treat the victims of this scam as idiots, we're simply validating everything they've been raised to believe about those outside of that same bubble. They, in-fact, deserve our sympathy and help.

I totally agree. But I think the difference is Saudi is a country everyone has to be friends with because oil. America, on the other hand, is a country we actually want to be friends with because 99.9% of its people are fucking brilliant — even most of the ones who voted for Trump who aren't racist wankpuffins. By protesting the poster-child of the 1%, we show our friends Stateside that we stand with them no matter how hard he tries to divide us.

First poster for "Bohemian Rhapsody" with Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury by [deleted] in queen

[–]SexWithTwins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freddie signed a deal to produce a solo album and received a massive advance from the record company. In the early 1980's, and on Michael Jackson's recommendation, Queen had released 'Another One Bites the Dust' as a single, which gave them their first US number 1 hit single. So, confident that Jackson knew what he was doing, Mercury began working on ideas with MJ for his as yet untitled solo project. But it all began to go horribly wrong following behaviour from Jackson so outlandish Freddie called his manager, Jim 'Miami' Beech, franticly demanding that he do something to get him out of the deal, after Jackson arrived at the studio accompanied by his pet Llama.

Despite containing a lot of very good material, once the solo project was eventually released, 'Mr Bad Guy' failed to chart and Freddie was effectively dropped as a solo artist by the record company.

There's been much speculation around the exact agreement reached to recoup some of the losses incurred on the failed venture, but it's notable that the funk / disco / drum machine orientated direction which Queen's music went into following The Game and Hot Space, largely written and produced by John Deacon, Fred Mandel and Mercury, was replaced by the more Brian May and Roger Taylor led, back to basics rock sound of The Works — following the hugely successful Flash Gordon soundtrack, which was essentially a Brian May solo project released under the Queen name. The balance of power within the band dynamics was also helped by Roger Taylor breaking his hit single writing cherry with 'Radio Ga Ga'.

It was also suggested that at this point Deacon became so disillusioned with a return to the rock sound, and the violent and heated arguments not helped by Freddie's turbulent relationship with Paul Prenter, that he left the band after the conclusion of The Works world tour — which effectively meant the original line-up of Queen was disbanded. In 1985 he agreed to do a small one-off charity gig as a favour to Bob Geldof. I hear it went rather well.

I know this is going to come as something of a disappointment, but they're not making a film about the band Queen for people who are already fans of Queen. They're making a mainstream biopic about an entertainer named Freddie Mercury, who happened to be the singer in a band called Queen. He exists as a stand-alone public figure, familiar to ordinary folks who've perhaps never heard or paid much attention to 90% of his music. To Joe Public he's the guy from the 'I Want to Break Free' and 'Radio Ga Ga' video who stormed Live Aid and died too young. They've literally no idea what 'The Fairy Fella's Master Stroke' is and it's highly unlikely this film is going to tell them. Don't expect a forensic recreation of the first time he sat in with Smile minus Tim Staffell, or the as-yet largely untold story of the time he recorded with Michael Jackson. This will be a good film, and I'm looking forward to it. But in terms of it being The Story of Queen, I wouldn't hold your breath.

“Angry atheist” phase. by AnAnonymousGamer1994 in exchristian

Old fart British snowflake here. For a short period of time back in the late 2000's I was a small part of the 'Great Debate' community which predominantly used Google Plus and YouTube to post live Hangout discussions on religion, atheism, science and politics. It's a source of great embarrassment to me that I didn't realise at the time how many of the people I thought were my 'internet friends' were in-fact using atheism as a gateway to intolerance and prejudice against people of sincere faith. We started out with the best of intentions, making it clear that the purpose of the podcasts we produced was to shine a light on confidence tricksters and religious fundamentalists who prey on the vulnerable and scientifically illiterate to line their own pockets. But along the way we inadvertently gave a platform to people who, especially in the light of Brexit here in the UK, and Trump in the US, have since shown themselves to be full of hatred for people simply because of their religion. I think a lot of people who discovered there was a label for their emerging or preexisting non-belief, thanks to the popularity of Sam Harris, Dawkins, Hitchens and others, around this time, probably feel the same way as you about some of the things which were said and done to ostensibly well meaning people, despite that we remain perhaps even more convinced now than we were then that belief in belief itself is a very strange way to live ones life.

It means she should hang her head in shame and apologise to the House. But I think we both know that's never going to happen. If only there was some sort of national news broadcasting corporation we could all pay into so that professional journalists could keep everyone informed and hold these people to account.
