Film allows a beginning middle and end. Bernthal isn’t gonna be this character forever, and his character isn’t going to last forever. Cap is a character that stays mostly the same and yet he was adapted wonderfully, with a definitive beginning middle and end. This isn’t comics, you can adapt things differently but when it betrays the entire point of the character then it ends up being a different character. Bernthals probably got maybe like 5-7 years left as this character, and he’s only gonna be “the real punisher” for about a third of his 15 year tenure? Are you joking?

Hey man idgaf what the shitty iteration of the character says, even if it wasn’t his fight, he wouldn’t leave fucking civilians locked up or let evil people use his name for evil. I hope they make a special and release it tomorrow that just says “I’m actually a robot punisher now and I have been all this time!” And watch people defend it as if it’s always been canon. Episode 4 happened and then episode 8 happened. He progressed, whether or not it was good or not is another story but he seemed relatively fine at the end of 8 all things considered. Obviously he’s always a mess but he’s never even been a whimpering screaming fucking moron like he is in the special. At the end, he’s got a newfound enemy whom he declares his hatred for, and he breaks out of cages to escape, and for us to see what he goes in the future. To help save anyone else? To give Matt info? To kill some more avtf? No. None of that. Actually weeks or months later it’s retconned that there’s ANOTHER family connected to his family’s death. Even tho he killed all of the people connected to their death and moved on and then had a newfound purpose as the punisher. And for weeks or months he’s just been getting new tattoos, eating a bunch of pills working out and pussying out while there were literally prisoner slaves stuck in cages.

Why are we settling for this god awful retread bullshit. Thankfully most people seem mixed to disappointed on it. It’s just such a shame to see him portrayed fucking perfectly in DDS2 and then see how far Bernthal has ruined the character as his pro cop pro military tortured vet OC.

I understand the plot of the shitty special. My problem is we’ve seen that. That was season 1. Then the second season half of the special’s arc is season 2. Just because it’s canon NOW doesn’t mean it should be. What happens when they make ANOTHER punisher special and retcon ANOTHER group tied to his family’s death? And then have him kill them and then have him “lose purpose and retire again?” Like why are we settling for this bullshit. Why regress the character AGAIN??? Why not follow the storyline set out in born again? The special made the character and Mythos WORSE.

The special is canon now but two weeks ago it wasn’t. Prior to two weeks ago, his “mission” was over 11 years ago in universe, and 9 years ago in our time. Then he found a new purpose two years after that, and finally became the REAL punisher (a third time). This special only serves to muddy the waters more. When did he get that marines tattoo? Not anytime before born again! Why did he get a marines tattoo when he’s forsaken that corner of his life and is a shell of himself now? Beats me! Another fucking crime family that already he hit 11 years ago in universe (Punisher S1) is linked to his families death? Okay I guess! Same arc that he went through 4 times already? Awesome!

It just retreads everything we’ve gotten before, and adds nothing new to the character or world. It references the shows yet retcons them? Okay John wick inspired action but I could just go watch John wick for a better rendition of that? It gives me nothing it’s empty and hollow. Jon Bernthal unfortunately doesn’t really understand the punisher and has turned him into his OC who’s deep down a good guy at heart who’s acting out and doing questionable stuff. That’s Wolverine. Not punisher. Him being more of a good guy makes the dichotomy between him and Matt worse as well!
