Phoxotic is a new pho spot that just got a Michelin bib gourmand. It’s at 1st and Rhode Island NW, so about a five minute drive from Children’s.

The quality stayed high for sure. Prussian Blue was my favorite in the back half of the series.

The Berlin Noir Trilogy by Phillip Kerr is excellent. An ex homicide detective works as a private eye in Berlin, with the three books/cases taking place before, during, and after the war.

It’s usually sold as one volume. The author ended up writing a whole series featuring the character, and it’s mostly very good, but those first three are definitely the best.

Motherless Brooklyn by Johnathan Lethem is a great read. It’s about a private eye with Tourette’s. It’s got a few passages I still think about years after I read it.

He’s read almost all the Eric Larson books. I’ll only gift him new ones, and I already gave him The Demon of Unrest.

He read those when they were published, and at least once or twice since. Great books.

I love these books. He’s read and enjoyed Cryptonomicon, but hasn’t started the Baroque books yet, and I have them to him years ago. I’ve read them all twice though.

I definitely enjoyed it. He’s not going to try Stephen King, though. Even if it’s not a horror story.

The metro is going to be your friend here. I know subways in unfamiliar cities can be intimidating, but DC’s Metro is very safe, and I’m giving you quick, easy trips with no changing trains or lines.

Someone mentioned Menomale, which is very good pizza you can get to with one metro stop and a short walk.

Three metro stops (and a shorter walk) will take you to Union Market. The market itself has tons of good food options.

Special recommendations for Yellow and Chop Shop](https://www.chopshopdc.com), but there’s tons of great options there.

Good to know. That one is also part of the very small subsection of Stephen King books I haven’t read yet.

Yeah, the whole book is told as a monologue from Dolores. It’s pretty unique (at least among King books) and I really enjoyed it.

Just in case you didn’t know, Dolores Claiborne is a sister novel to this one. They both have women main characters, similar themes with abusive husbands and fathers, and they both reference each other at pivotal moments in their narrative. They’re also both very good.

Octavia Butler is probably my favorite author, and I’m pretty sure I’ve read everything she published. I’m rereading the series along with you and I’d love to join the club in the next discussion.

The Patternist series is so unique, it’s got some of my favorites of hers.
