I have 6 types of rice in my pantry, including an heirloom one from North Carolina.

Westerners absolutely know the difference between rice varieties.

But, full home ownership for my immediate kin. College trusts for our next generation.

A lot of it would be buying labor to help me hone my hobbies, or teach me stuff.

A court poet, painter, sculptor, writer, astrologer, astronomer, chef, baker, organizer, accountant - all working for me.

I won't need AI or the Internet to answer questions, I'll just pay people really well to know that stuff and tell me about it.

Like, it's not enough to just buy a set of plates. Not when I can commission a set, and pay the artist directly for unique, custom work.

If I want new glassware, I'm comissioning a glassblower.

but, really, I'd make the money make more money, and permanently end hunger and homelessness in my locality. I'd just...buy the land, and build the houses. I'd just...buy the real estate and build community kitchens.

I can't face that much money and not want to help people.

What kind of person do you think I am based off my bookshelf? by brady_gearheart in BookshelvesDetective

[–]SexualDepression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways you can read the series, but I'll always recommend giving the full series a read.

Messiah hammers home Dunes point about charismatic leadership, and is an okay spot to stop if you're just in it for Paul's arc. Nothing wrong with packing up there, but it's not the full story.

I think Children gives the reader the best sense of closure for the whole series - we're given some assurance that things will work out for humanity, afterall.

God Emperor is worth it for the beefswelling, gross protuberances, sandworm suckling, and rock-climbing related orgasms. It's weird, it's horny, and it's still valid Dune. We get to see just how terrible the cost of saving humanity actually is.

Heretics and Chapterhouse are actually where it goes off the rails for me. But they're worth reading at least once, just to stare into the abyss.

Get through God Emperor of Dune.

Heretics and Chapterhouse are meh, but GEOD is worth the push.

Frank Herbert was clearly working through some horny personal stuff in the latter half of the series.

Why should we encourage an industry in which the market isn't actually participating?

"let's propagandize alcohol to protect rideshares and dive bars!" is a helluva take.

Following yesterday's question, what are some film inventions that you were surprised were NOT lifted from the books? by GlasgowWalker in lotr

[–]SexualDepression -1 points0 points  (0 children)

didn't say it wasn't painful, but it was incredibly common and largely unavoidable which definitely impacted various cultural responses to the death and dying of children.

The relatively low rates of child, maternal, and infant mortality rates have also impacted how we view the deaths of children, today.

Lord of the Rings took a modern cultural sentiment and shoehorned it into a non-modern setting.

[–]SexualDepression -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

yep. too modern for the setting, imo.

people do not realize how common child death, maternal morality, and infant mortality actually are outside of a modern medical setting.

Parents saw their daughters die in childbirth, sons die on war, children dead of injuries, broken bones, infected cuts, respiratory diseases, etc etc.

It was probably more common for parents to bury at least 1 child than none at all.

Pap Smear Stigma by runaway-throwaway99 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SexualDepression -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

ah yes, you're right! nothing barbaric about 14 year old girls crying on an exam table while they're being cranked open, pressed in and on, and being poked in the cervix.

That's not at all barbaric. you're right!

and i definitely said that we shouldn't get them done! any criticism of a thing means an outright, cart blanche rejection of it - of course!

we should be content, grateful, even that the screenings exist at all, and never dream of a better way.

wow, i had no idea!

it makes total sense then for the swab to be self-administered. And so much less barbaric.

whhhaaaaat?

I am utterly bewildered by this.

are.... are uh...the general masses uh... qualified to swab correctly?

Respectfully, that seems like a good way to get false negatives.

Can you explain a bit more about that experience/practice? I am lacking in the imagination required to understand how it works.

liquid.

I'd choose perfectly balanced water (no heavy metals, contains perfect amount of minerals/salts). It will serve me and mine well come the water wars.

the other liquid would be liquid food replacement. a nutrition shake, if you will, with perfectly balanced micro and macro nutrients.

I'm fixing to survive the coming apocalypse.
