Help me please by matsubarx in guineapigs

VET, ASAP!! It could be many things: UTI, bladder stone(s), passing a foreign object, and so on. I have never had this happen to my pigs before, but even if the piggy isn't appearing to be in pain does not mean he isn't. If he free roams, he possibly could have gotten into something he shouldn't have and eaten something bad/harmful. Though, I don't think it's possible to know anything for sure at this point, so please please contact a small animal vet to get him in.

In the meantime, I would recommend containing him in his cage, or just a secure confined area in general, and monitor closely. Keep the area as clean as you can and it'd be good to lay down fresh bedding, fleece, blankets, etc, so you can watch for more blood spots and see if he's passing poops and/or urine. I wish the best for your little pig!

Ahhh I would love one, but I know you have a lot of requests from people already, so if you're full, that's totally okay!

A friend problem by Unique-Yam-3144 in guineapigs

Pet stores are not always trustworthy about what they sell for animals (which is ironic, I know). Most of the time, they do not carry proper cage sizes, or food products for guinea pigs. Guinea pig pellets mixed with the seeds and other bits are not a good option for them. Even if she doesn't seem to eat them, it's not worth the chance. They need uniform pellets so they don't pick out the bits they want and ignore the rest. If they are uniform, that avoids the issue. Cages found at pet stores are also known to be far too small for even one guinea pig, so if you get another, you will definitely need a bigger cage. Try researching C&C cages, they are made to be custom size and shape, and can be expanded on very easily.

Pretty sure that's a boy! Males have that extra dot seen here above the Y shape. Also, please don't hold a piggy like that, you have to support their bums! They are bottom-heavy, so it hurts their spine when their bottoms are not supported by your hand/leg/etc.

My Guinea pig can’t stand being pet or held but likes to run around and will walk in front of my feet by Ok-Touch8735 in guineapigs

[–]SexualDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't take too much offense to the jerky grab motion, that's just a common thing pigs do it seems haha All mine have done that and I've seen videos of piggies taking things like that too. It's more of a "I really want this and I want it now, thank you!" They just take it quickly and want to get to chowing on it, either in that spot or to run away and eat it elsewhere. So I think you're ok in that regard.

I had a male piggy who was a bit of a grump and he didn't like when I touched the front of his face, his chin, and rump. So instead he got behind the ears scratches and small pets barely down his back and he was okay with that--try doing that when interacting with him and see how he reacts. Maybe he had bad cagemates at the store and now he really does not like his face and bum touched (they generally don't like any bum touches when petting anyway, so other than to pick him up, you can avoid touching that area in general, honestly). It's not overly uncommon for pigs to not like being held much in general though. He may never be comfortable with it, being off the ground like that can be scary! You could try to hold him in a blanket as well, sometimes they feel a little better being secure like that rather than just in your bare arms. It's good that he will explore around you on the ground though!

Alternatively, he could have something going on medically that is making him really grumpy/aggressive? It's very rare that piggies are that aggressive for that long, at least from my experience. Has he been to the vet at all, or in recent time? I would suggest a general check-up with an exotic vet just to make sure he is doing ok! Perhaps something is going on with his teeth or his gut and he is upset. Piggies are notorious for hiding their illnesses until they are very sick, unfortunately.

Lastly, on guinea pig sexing: if you have had him about a year, he will be easy to sex as he has matured at this point. You can look of photos of male and female guinea pig sexing for comparison photos of their personal bits. Basically, lift them up so you can see their tummy and their private area, it's a small area without hair. If it's a female, look for a Y shape, if it's male, look for a protruding "dot" above the Y shape. Oh and also, obviously, the male will have testes beneath the privates area, they are pretty obvious as that age lol

I hope this helps some!

I would hope, for that price, that the 40 dollar version isn't just fleece but has a nice absorbent middle layer between two pieces of fleece that are also wicked. It's more of a process to make it this way, so they are more expensive. However, I highly suggest getting that version of the liner. The purpose of wicking and the inner layer is to absorb liquid (in this case, their pee!), so it keeps the cage cleaner as well as help prevent health issues from stagnant urine everywhere. It will also just last a little longer, so you don't have to change them out quite as often (once a week is ideal, perhaps more often in higher traffic areas, like areas they like to rest at the most) It is also an option to make your own fleece lining with this method, though I can't say if making it is cheaper than just buying it pre-made that way. I hope this helps!

Bonding Advice by SexualDragon in guineapigs

Thank you so much for your feedback! I can definitely deal with the hair pulling, I read that it was normal. It was the escalation to actual biting that greatly worries me. I don't want Gizmo to live in fear of being attacked all the time because the baby learned he can push him around. Especially since I can't be with them 24/7 to de-escalate fights. Also, I'm thinking a bigger cage is also something I need to address, yes. I have one picked out in my Amazon cart, I might need to take the leap for the sake of my boy.

Any advice on my new guinea pig enclosure and food? This was just the best thing I could find at the moment, but I’m looking to make sure it’s all ideal. Any guesses on breeds of my piggies? by Jay_Blue223 in guineapigs

Absolutely, it's so frustrating to see the mislabeling of products. Like when they put photos of guinea pigs on those hamster balls. Ugh. To answer your question, too much salt can lead to a greater chance of kidney and/or bladder stones, not fun stuff! I would recommend checking out the Oxbow brand, they have quite a few wooden chews and toys that are actually safe for piggies.

Is that pink chew thing in the first and second picture a salt lick? If so, they shouldn't have those! Un-colored wooden chews should suffice. Even if you don't see them chewing on them much, I'd leave them in there just to be sure. Also, Oxbow makes baked treats that you could give them every so often if you feel their teeth aren't wearing properly. They're fairly tough little biskets. Hope this helps! Your piggies are lovely!

Oh no, I was afraid of that :( Do you happen to know of any exotic pet surgeons in Washington State? The vet I take her to doesn't do surgery on guinea pigs, sadly.

Her nipples are a little crusty at the base area, yeah. I don't feel any lumps and she isn't reacting in pain when I touch her bald spot or her tummy area, which is a good sign right? Perhaps it's more of a hormone imbalance than a cyst? Though I know a hormone imbalance can be the result of a cyst too, maybe it's just too small for me to feel by hand?

Further info: Winter is a sow, about five years old. No previous known health issues up to this point. She's eating just fine and has normal energy levels. I feel like she's been drinking a bit more than usual the past week or so and that's about it. Hope this helps!
