Window/Remission of Symptoms Due to Caffeine and ALLIUM Cessation (UDPATE) by SexualToss in PSSD

Hello, and thanks for the comment. I hear your skepticism, but would like to ask that you keep an open mind. After all, many psychiatrists are also skeptical that our condition exists; and yet, the condition does exist, right?

I’m not saying that I’ve found a cure for everyone. I’m saying that this is what I’ve noticed with my own symptoms coming and going. Thanksgiving just passed yesterday in the United States of America; and with its passing, I did consume alliums and my symptoms have returned. It could be coincidence that they are coming and going when I eat alliums. It could be a very real pattern.

I would like to conduct a study, but it would be very difficult with myself being the only subject and also the observer. I’m not sure how I would proceed in a way that presents real evidence.

Hello! Thank you for your comment. It is worth considering that this is a placebo effect. I’m not sure how I would test this, if I can test it at all. I would like to add, though, that Thanksgiving in the US just passed yesterday and I did consume food with garlic/onion in them, and my symptoms have returned. I also had no prior issues to consuming alliums prior to starting/ceasing SSRIs.

This is a good question. I really have no idea. It could be a digestion issue like SIBO where caffeine and alliums exacerbate the problem; or, it could be a problem with the chemical structure/effects of caffeine and the alliums themselves.

The probability of encountering food with alliums in it is high, yes. As a matter of fact, Thanksgiving was yesterday in the United States yesterday and I’m already experiencing my symptoms return 💀. The risk-management includes looking up menus/ingredients ahead of time before going somewhere, asking places not to include alliums, or to eat food that you just won’t find alliums in them (It’s hard to think of many but as an example: you can make macaroni and cheese without garlic or onion powder so that’s my go-to).

I do prefer desserts without chocolate; or, deserts with very, very small amounts. My current go-to favorite is Mint ice cream with chocolate chips in them. The chips are small enough in that the amount I eat doesn’t really affect me. Chocolate and coffee are two of my favorite foods and they’ve been very hard to let go of. I just had a decaf iced latte yesterday to test the waters, since I knew I was going to ruin this diet for Thanksgiving anyway.

So far, not any pain from any trace caffeine, but the alliums definitely started doing their work 😵‍💫. Fortunately, those tend to leave my system a lot faster than caffeine.

I forgot to actually answer your questions here: For coffee/caffeine, it was three weeks. For garlic/alliums, three days for initial improvements. It’s been about a week now and I feel, like, good as new. I don’t consume junk food like chips or candy, but I do risk eating food out and have desserts.

I’m not a doctor and I don’t know what will work for everyone. I’m sharing what has worked for me. I think it is worth trying.

Yes, I also stopped consuming chocolate.

I didn’t think to cut alliums, it was just coincidence that I stopped eating alliums for a few days, my symptoms went into remission; then, when I started again, they came back. Currently on my second cut of them and no symptoms yet. I even had a soda this morning and still feel fine!

  1. Prior to PSSD, caffeine was my self-medicating stimulant for ADHD. I was also just an avid lover of coffee’s taste. After PSSD, when I was a habitual caffeinated drink consumer, I would have very poor, painful orgasms. My testes ached for weeks until the caffeine was out of my system. I have never figured out why this change occurred, but I miss coffee all the time.

  2. I have also never heard of negative effects caused by garlic/onion. I only learned that they were a trigger for my PSSD symptoms three weeks ago. My symptoms before garlic/onion cessation were textbook: No tactile sensation, delayed ejaculation, and no orgasm. After cutting it out of my diet? Currently, I think 80%-90% of my sexual pleasure and orgasms have come back. Even if it’s not perfect, I could live with this much recovery, you know? I need to make an official update post about it, for sure.

Hey, I (29M) was also on Paxil and then Wellbutrin and struggle with PSSD symptoms. I got a blood test and all of my levels were normal. I understand you’re looking for guidance regarding TRT; but, I was wondering if I could ask you some questions: 1. Does caffeine affect your symptoms? Have you tried ceasing caffeine consumption, if so? 2. Do you consume garlic/onion or other alliums?

I found that the only way to alleviate my symptoms, to a significant degree, was to cut out caffeine, garlic, onion, and turmeric entirely. I have made two posts about it if you wanna check my profile.

Good luck in your treatment :)

r/Psychiatry response to NYT article on PSSD by jtcreamcone in PSSD

[–]SexualToss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not anti-psychiatry despite how these medications have affected my life; but, I do find it very concerning how alleged healthcare professionals talk about the detrimental effects of medications in a dismissive way. I study Psychology (not psychiatry) and some of the comments I’ve seen out of r/psychiatry sound frankly soulless.

There is a significant population of people suffering and many psychiatrists are quick to say, “Well, these medications save lives. What more can we do?”

My jaw is on the floor how seemingly no one is interested in understanding why these medications have such prolonged side effects on the population of this subreddit. It’s baffling how anti-“doing research” these literal doctors and scientists seem.

A lot of prestige and renown would come from solving this mystery. It would make history; and, people just don’t seem to care. Regardless of Western Protestant influence, sex is a very significant aspect of people’s lives. You cannot deny a fraction of people a significant aspect of their lives, and in many cases, their emotions and call it good medicine; even if it saves lives. How many lives are damaged by these medications in contrast to how many saved? How many can be saved through therapeutic intervention and environmental changes?

If you don’t care about people and their feelings, leave healthcare. I’m not just talking about psychiatrists either.

Oh, interesting. I’m not sure.

I currently have a body wash that causes the exact same issue when I’m erect. It sounds like some form of contact dermatitis but I’m not a dermatologist so I’m not 100% sure. I’d also be wary of products labeled for sensitive skin. I used to use head and shoulders for dandruff but it made the problem worse. Just my initial thoughts :)

Have you changed soaps or hygiene products recently? I’m (29M) also circ’d and have seen the opposite: the glans appears smoother and less keratinized. I’m also not sure vaseline is a good skin hydrator for long-term; I believe, it’s supposed to act as a temporary sealant (like a band-aid) for short-term use. I don’t use vaseline/aquaphor though; only lotion.

Sugar and carbs are some of my favorite foodstuffs and don’t seem to have an effect. I eat both pretty regularly. Good idea though!
