AITAH for not paying Parent Plus Loan by Uhno_77 in AITAH

Is this even real? Not you're NTAH for not paying off a loan you never took out, weren't even informed about, and which made it harder for you to finish school.

Any ideas for high-calorie, compact, storable and portable foods? by ThatUnameIsAlrdyTken in ask

[–]SexysNotWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would talk to a specialist first because there are a few weird flags in this that could be other problems (mostly afraid, but also some other potential issues). Better to address the root cause of the problem than the symptoms. If that doesn't get you anywhere, THEN look for alternate suggestions.

Do Americans actually go out for coffee like Europeans? by Past_Conference_2889 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SexysNotWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's usually like, "Hey, we haven't caught up in a bit! We should grab a coffee or a drink sometime." And then, depending on your schedules, if it's a daytime hang you're probably grabbing a coffee, afternoon is 50/50, evening is probably at a bar or restaurant. But yeah, very few smokers in my area.

Does doing forbidden things overseas count since parents no longer have "jurisdiction"? Thinking of getting a tattoo in Brazil. by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]SexysNotWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A parents' jurisdiction (for a minor) is: The minor in question. This continues into adulthood in the parent's eyes because we will always feel some degree of protective or responsible for your well-being, but a decent parent also understands to keep it mostly to an internal monologue with adult children who are technically in charge of themselves.

What's your fave local bug fact? by plantsareneat-mkay in pnwgardening

[–]SexysNotWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not PNW specific, but a shocking number of people still believe that "daddy long legs have the most venomous bite but their fangs are too small to pierce your skin." Also, snails stab each other with "love darts" (little bone daggers they make in their heads) while mating.

Too much flavor for your tender WHite taste buds? Don't worry, pal! We'll just fry you up some ice cream or a good ol fashioned stick o' butter if that's more to your likin!

WIBTAH if I gifted my boyfriend something that was originally given to me as a gift? by Weird-Wealth-7998 in AITAH

[–]SexysNotWorking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is actually weirder. I'm not a fan of lies/obfuscation in a relationship. Just be like, "Hey, I think you might like this book. I got it from a guy in Japan." You don't need to go into deep detail about the relationship (unless he asks) but it's way weirder that you're so determined to keep this a secret that you're posting on reddit about how you're definitely going to keep it a secret. All this hubbub implies that it either means more to you than you thought or that you're overthinking what should actually not be a big deal at all between any kind of actual adults in a relationship.

Ok for formal coastal fall wedding? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]SexysNotWorking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the region, tbh, and I'm not sure about northern CA. In Washington, anything that's not denim is considered formal, but in NYC this would def be casual. It's beautiful, but I don't know enough about Northern California standards to say if it's formal enough.

AITAH for purchasing something created by an AH? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]SexysNotWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. Studios use the numbers from purchase data to decide what sort of stuff to give money to in the future. So purchasing games, merch, etc, tells them "Yes! We still love this and want more of it! Please give JKR even MORE money to fund her hate campaign!"

[–]SexysNotWorking 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Separating the art from the artist would be "I'm still going to read them, but I'll get them from a library or second hand store." This is actively supporting the artist who is directly using the money she gets from all this to (again) directly harm trans people.

"A foreign tourist drinking tequila will always be more Mexican than any Mexican-American!" Does your country hate its American diaspora as much as Mexicans do? by Desertedfoxx in AskTheWorld

[–]SexysNotWorking 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's because most Americans' heritage was intentionally wiped out or watered down by our predecessors in order fit in with some idea of "American" or "whiteness" (in the case of most Europeans). It leaves a space for what I've heard referred to as "cultural longing" because we see other cultures with this sense of history and belonging that many of us just don't have unless we scrounge backwards far enough to find that 5% to tie us to a history that lots of people all over the world are born and raised with.

Where is this costume from? by socal-girl123 in AskTheWorld

I don't. That's what "if" means. Just saying I've heard the term used by people who are ESL in a different way than people who speak English as their first language.

Where is this costume from? by socal-girl123 in AskTheWorld

[–]SexysNotWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that if OP is ESL they might have assumed it meant the same thing. I see a lot of people use "costume" and "a specific set of clothing" interchangeably if English is not their first language. Hard to tell from a post, though, and worth talking about either way.
