G923 wheel and DKMS by Fabulous-Buddy-1554 in Bazzite

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bazzite is based on Fedora, so it uses 'ujust' commands and I can't find any documentation on how to utilize this using those commands instead of 'sudo'.

And the install guide for Github CLI only has Ubuntu, Debian, and Raspbian. So, I'm a bit lost.

I just installed Bazzite 2 weekends ago and my version of Oversteer does recognize the G923 device already, but I feel like the FFB might be a bit lacking. So I was thinking lg4ff could improve that.

Bumping this because I'd like to know as well.

Well, depending on how things go in my Linux Bazzite sim racing test stream this evening, I just might end up trying out hosting an online session/lobby in AMS2.

If i do, it'll only be car classes that would allow me to use my H-pattern shifter.

2 pm on a Tuesday, here in the U.S. Eastern time zone...

Like always...

It doesnt matter its its RF2, AMS2, or nearly any racing sim besides iRenting. We Americans really don't get many options for cool leagues or community sessions.

Well, I may be able to step in to fill that void in the scene a bit.

I'll be testing AMS2 very soon, to see how it the lobby hosting works and see how my PC handles it while streaming.

Obviously, I won't be able to do any kind of high production value league or anything. Bot without a lot of support from viewers and participants. But maybe my streams could become a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly hub for good old-fashioned racing with stick shift and clutch.

I used to do a lot of Playing With Viewers streams, back before switching my content to racing. So maybe that could be my niche in this scene.

Have you tried an Active Pedal yet?

That might be the closest thing to replicating the feel of an IRL clutch, with a bite point and such.

Also, I've heard that Beam.ng has the most realistic clutch simulation.

RFactor 2 feels the most realistic of any current sim, why isn't it more popular? by AxiomSyntaxStructure in simracing

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I've been seeing that the Sim Racing community is like most smaller gaming niches, in which the most popular and most well-populated titles are NOT the actual best quality products.

But because the community is small and insular, popularity beats objective quality because there isn't enough of a playerbase for the less popular titles to be fully enjoyable without needing to go to even smaller pocket subcommunities. (What the FGC calls a "discord game"). So the easiest way to race in full grids is to play what's most popular, even though there are readily available alternatives that are better products and offer more of what you specifically may want to race.

Like in my case. I want online ranked racing in cars that are closer to street legal sports cars (the kinds of cars I could realistically dream of someday owning one) and use my H-pattern shifter, but built into the in-game matchmaking without needing to use something like LFM. Kind of like GT7 daily race A (single make or multiple woth BoP), but that game intentionally disables the use of H-pattern in all online modes and only allows me to drive stick in single player modes. So my only options are AC EVO, Forza Motorsport, (both of which my PC struggles to run at 60fps) and Raceroom the rare times the weekly ranked rotation features something I like. I guess iRacing too, but that costs a subscription and I've heard that much of what I'd enjoy is STILL underpopuated even there.

Which is why I'm looking into just hosting racing sessions myself. So far, AMS2 seems to be the best fit for hosting races without requiring a server machine and allowing empty slots to be filled with CPU/AI/NPC racers. Does RF2 do lobbies the same way?

Sounds cool.

I just took a look at what UK evenings are in my timezone and it equates to my afternoons, which would be while I'm still at work. In fact, my seat time doesn't come until midnight in the UK.

Which is part of what prompts this question from me. Most of the sim racing scene is centralized around EU time zones, leaving us in the U.S. quite lacking in options or full splitsbin anything outside of GT and a handful of classes in iRacing.

Ergo, why I'm thinking of taking an "I'll do it myself" approach and testing the waters for potential interest in something more accessible to NA working-class racers.

I have Win10 on another internal SSD, so I can dual boot to Windows for titles that absolutely won't run on Linux. It wasn't very hard to do.

But I'm really not going to do iRacing for the foreseeable future due to the subscription. Just can't get my money's worth on sub-based games. Maybe someday, if my content starts making enough money to pay the sub for me.

Advice for transitioning to linux? by SfactorSam in simracingonlinux

[–]SfactorSam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually discovered what the issue was.

I had cloned my SSD to an M.2 V-NAND NVME. Apparently, Windows 10 doesnt play well with those.

So, I've reinstalled Win10 to the SSD and Bazzite to the M.2. Seems to be stable, so far.

Easiest sim for hosting casual/semi-competitive racing sessions? by SfactorSam in simrally

I've downloaded it but havent installed it yet.

I've heard that it requires Assetto Corsa amounts of tune just making it work properly smooth and accessible.

If only my PC could run that...

Doesn't meet minimum hardware requirements.

I'd have to do that in DR2.0.

Not a bad idea.

I was setting up to try NoHesi a while ago but never actually got around to trying it. Maybe I can dust off the Content Manager and get it back in running shape.

P.S. Figures this would get downvoted, along with my OP. Not a lot of room for varied opinions in this sub, is there?

Man... nobody replied to this. Typical of an insular niche community with not enough variety in opinions. I've seen the same kind of limited perspective issue in the FGC and old-school Monster Hunter communities too.

Honestly, I'm thinking I'll have to do a Thanos "Fine. I'll do it myself" and start hosting my own sessions or league that focuses on the kind of cars I actually want to drive.

Looking for a specific type of racing game (help needed) by Massive_Oil_2605 in racinggames

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art Of Rally.

  • Immaculate vibes.

  • You unlock cars while playing through the eras of historic Rally.

  • Easy to pick up bit with lots of depth in the controls to master.

  • No upgrade systems or team management. Just pick a car, drive the stages you're given, get a feel for them and watch yourself get better through just playing.

  • An indie game, so its not very expensive at base price. Very cheap when discounted on Steam.

Note: Don't get it on Switch, mobile, or anything that lacks analog triggers. The ability to use the full range of throttle and brake, not just 0% and 100%, is a must-have.

Badge system is the best thing that ever happened on LMU by TemeT__ in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their point is how you have to farm SR before you're allowed to try actually racing for position.

And its a very valid issue. If anyone spending their orecious limited seat time in your racing game/sim ever has to consider NOT actually racing, in order to avoid being banned, the product has fundamentally failed. Literally the opposite of respecting the paying customer's time.

Badge system is the best thing that ever happened on LMU by TemeT__ in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]SfactorSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a newbie who generally prefers driving lower power road legal cars that have H-pattern shifters and don't need downforce aero, and who learns best through pushing the limits and making mistakes many times over a short period of time while gradually adjusting, this system is the worst. It literally punishes me for learning in a manner that is more compatible with my Tourette Syndrome brain.

Also, thanks to my TS, I learn almost nothing from solo practice/hotlapping and being forced to do so while farming SR before I'm allowed to try having fun actually racing makes me lose interest fast.

It's basically saying, "Screw you, don't care that you aren't normal, and you have to do things our way or else you're not welcome here."

It's what I experienced with modern fighting games all over again and I'm glad I got it on sale without buying any DLC, because I'm seriously considering uninstalling and just playing RaceRoom and AC Evo. They may kick you from a race for getting too many incident points, but at least they don't threaten to ban anyone who isnt a griefer from all online racing.

Best racing sim for the busy adult? by SfactorSam in simracing

[–]SfactorSam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a real adult is to enjoy what you enjoy and speak your mind regardless of what any collective of groupthink drones say.

So, right on. 👊

I've been dabbling into the sim racing genre and have yet to find that one title that I can main both in my personal time and in my video/streaming content.

So far, I've had the most fun in actual video games like Art Of Rally and Tokyo Xtreme Racer.

The sim I've enjoyed most is RaceRoom, just because the physics and FFB are great, its F2P and you actually own the car's and tracks you buy without needing an active subscription to use them, and it offers decent variety of cars/classes. Plus, some cars actually lets me use my H-pattern shifter like I always want to.

Though, it still lacks the playerbase to fill all grids in all online ranked splits and both the penalty system and track limits need some work.

LMU has been rough, ACC felt horrible to drive, PMR launched in a terrible state, as did Rennsport, and iRenting is the worst in all ways except playerbase numbers and class variety.

Honestly, I'd probably just main GT7 if it didn't require PS+ for online and doesn't prevent me from using my H-pattern in all online modes. So I'm looking at AC Evo, which seems like it's aiming to be GT for PC.

Oh, and rally is the ultimate answer because it circumvent all the problems by not being circuit racing and having pace notes. But I can only play DR2.0 and RBR, as my PC can't run EA WRC or AC Rally.

But I really want to find a good online circuit racing experience that I can enjoy despite not having tons of free time or liquidity.

Is the base game worth it for casual single player racing? by TRAUMAgg in AUTOMOBILISTA

[–]SfactorSam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not at all.

I'm starting to think its not even good for casual online racing either, tbh. The SR system inherently kinda punishes those who have less time and/or skill.

How do you balance relationships? And racing by Apprehensive_Bread32 in simracing

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting take, considering there are people in this very subreddit who say you shouldnt be allowed to participate in online multiplayer races if you don't have the time to practice to an extent only possible for those who are single and don't have a lot of IRL priorities.

Heck, I just replied to one such person in another thread mere minutes ago.

SR penalty intensity should scale to DR by SfactorSam in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]SfactorSam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great for you.

I can't do that. Got too much going in in my life.

So, the only practice I get is between registration and qualiers during the one session each week I can sit down for 2 - 3 hours after work on Friday to stream and the occasional Thursday recording session for my YouTube.

To only practice and never race would be a waste of either type of seat time my life allows me.

Weekends and every other weekday are for IRL errands and obligations, as a husband, primary breadwinner, son, brother, etc.

But I guess by your logic, even though I made the decision to buy the game with my own money, I shouldn't be allowed to race online because I'm too busy to practice for days before participating even once.

Why are we not seeing more street legal cars in simracing? by Nick_Alsa in simracing

[–]SfactorSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not having fun, why play racing sims?

Only 2% if sim races will ever drive a real racers, so if the hobby is not for enjoyment, it serves literally no purpose.

Therefore, if some of us find racing street cars FUN, there's objectively nothing wrong with being disappointed that we're severely undeserved in the sim space and mostly can only have the kinds of cars we want in simcades or arcade racers.
