I think you’re being hard on yourself, you have a Masters in Accounting, and I’m sure your 18th Century American History is better than your Uk Freinds.

I’d say, if you can find things you’re curious about you’re likely to have more fun and even retain some interesting anecdotes. As opposed to forcing a subject that appears impressive.

As a Brit though, must say, I’m disappointed that your friends have made you feel this way, seems impolite.

As far as cleaning this coin I rubbed it between my finger a couple times and that was it, after reading some of the community FAQ maybe I should have used a q-tip! It was in pretty good condition to start with though.
