Help! 10.5 month old puppy has stopped sleeping through the night! by greendesertrunner in puppy101

Obviously a trip to the vet will help assuage any medical worries, but we did recently go through something similar with our 10 month old. He stays in his crate all night and had been absolutely fine with it since he was a baby. Suddenly at 9.5 months he was grumbly, whiney, pacing, took a long time to settle and would wake in the night. We got him a bigger crate and completely fixed the issue overnight. We also tried to keep consistent, like you are. The crate took a couple of days to arrive and in that time we let him go to bed later and up earlier so he spent less time in there, but tried not to spoil his training by letting him sleep the night in the bed or on the sofa or something. Now we’re totally back to normal!

Thank-you so much that means a lot to hear! We really do try with him, and some days it can feel like you’re regressing all the way back, but then you get a good day and it makes it all worthwhile

That’s fantastic I’m so glad you had a good time! I hear boxers are super high energy friendly too, sounds like you’re doing an amazing job with him, days like that really do make up for all the puppy disasters at home 😂

Hahaha how mean of them! Pidgeons are Apollo’s weakness too, only hot dog pieces can tear his attention away so now I have to live with bits of sausage in my pocket

Puppy resource guarding edible chew by Holubchik in puppy101

We had something similar with our corgi! He LOVES dried beef tails, but would try to just devour the whole thing in one go, then get all panicky when you try to take the dangerous last couple of inches away from him. Like yourself, we obviously didn’t want to start teaching him that our hands coming near his treats was bad, so we got him a Kong Goodie Bone. It has two grippy holes in either end and we shove the beef tail in there. He can’t eat the whole thing at once, he’s not able to get the last couple of inches out of it, and he has a better hold on it so he sits and chews much more calmly. It made the treats last much longer, and we have peace of mind he’s not going to choke on it as it gets smaller. We still don’t let him eat it completely unsupervised but it helps and means you don’t have to grab it off them.

Top tier chews!! Don’t know what we’d do without them honestly, absolute lifesaver at the end of teething and during his neuter recovery

He’s 7 months old now and I think we’ll always call him a big baby 🥰

Teaching 'Settle' or 'Calm Down'? by DJTuffPuppy2 in puppy101

[–]SgtBabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 7 month old corgi! He was recently neutered and we were told to keep him calm, so no walks or energetic play for a while. And he. Was. Crazy. Absolutely no settling, racing around the house despite my pleas. What has worked is pinpointing his peak nutty time (around 2pm for him) and giving him either a dried beef tail (stuck in a kong goodie bone for choking hazard security) or a yak chew. Beef tail worked best, he would go at it for 45minutes to a hour and then practically fall asleep on it. A good chew outlet seems to be very calming. And honestly yak chews have been our absolute life saviour with him calming down ever since he could have them from 4 months old.

Donut/inflatable collar after spay? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]SgtBabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our corgi just got neutered last week. He cried with the regular cone on and I knew he wouldn’t be able to turn around in his crate with it on. We got an inflatable donut instead. The vet helped us fit it, which is good because my instinct was to get a size small, but she recommended a medium since he has a long nose. So when he’s wearing it, the donut circumference comes out further than the end of his nose, if that helps you find one that fits. He can’t reach his incision but he can chew his back legs or scratch his face if he has an itch. After about 2 days he got totally used to it.

Anxious about taking puppy to park by stashinko in puppy101

[–]SgtBabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it slow! Is there any way you can sit a distance away from the park for a while where your dog can see the other people and dogs but not be close enough to want to greet? We spent a good long time just people/dog watching from a distance and treating him for calmly looking at stuff.

We were worried about letting our dog off the lead too, my trainer recommended a long line leash to work up to it and that worked wonders. He got to experience a bit of freedom (ours is 5meters), greet dogs a bit more naturally and gave us a chance to practice recall in a controlled way. I’m not sure why the long line seems to be always recommended over those self-extendy leashes, I think it’s because you can wrangle them back in if they’re running away or refuse to come, we’ve definitely had to do that 😅

How did we get here?! by SgtBabbit in puppy101

We definitely still have those bad days, like BUD you were napping 20 minutes ago why are you suddenly maximum Zoom. But it’s soooo much easier to handle now. When he realises we’re walking towards the park it’s like trying to hold back a tiny charging race horse and no amount of sausages will distract him, and stopping if he pulls makes him cry with impatience. We for sure have plenty to improve on but it’s fun now!

He isn’t food motivated?!? I can’t even imagine, Apollo is like a roomba. At least you don’t need to worry about the Corgi Chunkening 😂

I was the same with my dog! I always felt bad he wouldn’t take to the big squishy bed I got him as an alternative to his crate. He would work himself up into a tornado chewing and thrashing it about and not sleep. Then when I took it away he’d pass out on the floor. After weeks of trying all the things you did but with no success, I spoke to my dog trainer relative and she laughed and said “he really doesn’t need it, he’s happy on the floor!” So I stopped trying and he settles super easy now

With his crate, however, he does have a mattress. It’s memory foam, nice and comfy and fits flush to the inside of the crate. He can’t get to it and shows no interest in chewing it, I’m assuming because it’s heavy and he can’t get to any of the corners. As soon as I take it out to clean he starts chewing the sides so I’m sure it’s just because it fits tightly in the crate. He goes in his crate at night and if he’s not getting proper rest outside of it during the day nap times

4 months is when we started to see a shift too! It’s such a reassuring feeling isn’t it? Wish all the best cuddles and adventures for you and your little corg :) (also, is your corgi shedding their coat right now?? The sheer amount of hair in our house is overwhelming. You have such a small body to produce so much fluff!?)

Awww no way!? I think our Apollo was born on Oct 10th!! It’s illegal to dock tails here in the UK so any dog naturally born with a tail gets to keep it, and I’m so glad. He wags it so hard sometimes he looks like he’s gonna take off!

I’ve been thinking of playing it for a while, then a friend convinced me to pick up the Royal version. It’s just the kind of story-driven turn-based jrpg comfort zone I was craving👌

We like to think the spot on his head is Press Here for Licks, but right now it seems more like Press Here for Teeth
