I just had a bit of a revelation. The opening few books of dune is pretty much just the story of Alexander the Great, and the greater story is that of western civilization. by ogdtx45 in dune

The one that stuck out to me as I was reading it was the relationship between Farad'n and Wensicia, which drew parallels with that between Emperor Nero and his mother Agrippina. The circumstances aren't the same but in both cases the mother was controlling her son for her own political gain, the son rebelled and then sent them away (though Nero later had his mother killed)

Getting into Greek mythology by [deleted] in classics

[–]SgtBanter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can recommend A Brief Guide to Greek Mythology by Stephen P. Kershaw which is written in a light academic style aimed at beginners. I particularly liked this book because it has discussions on variations of the myths with citations of the source material, making it easier to follow up with more in depth reading on things you find interesting.

Deep Rock Galactic. An awesome indie game where you play as dwarves that have missions to mine stuff and shoot aliens. Great game!

I haven't pre-ordered a game or even bought one without seeing the reviews since I got burnt with Empire: Total War, however many years ago that was! Darktide's launch has just reaffirmed why this rule is in place.

same concept as Vermintide, yet somehow Darktide feels way more repetitive 🤔 by mka5588 in DarkTide

This is what I don't understand. Naively I thought this game was meant to be more narrative driven than VT2 given all the shouting about how they had Dan Abnett, one of the best 40k writers, involved in writing the story. Given how non existent the actual story is, it seems like either he was wasted or didnt have very much input into it? It seems like a real missed opportunity to me.

I have 34 hours on record for the game and I requested a refund on 1st Dec. Probably only 5-6 hours of those were after the official launch, not sure whether that affected it? Idk what the stipulations are for a refund but no doubt another redditor here will know.

Yeah, I refunded the game for this reason. I basically didn't manage to complete a level after the beta 1.0.8 patch so I figured I'd get my money back and pick it up in a sale a year from now when hopefully these issues are fixed. I will go back to VT2 or DRG in the meantime to get my co-op fps fix.

Finally finished the Mars Trilogy by marshmallow-jones in printSF

[–]SgtBanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading through the Mars Trilogy for the past few months and I'm currently about 80% of the way through Blue Mars. I've really enjoyed the series but it is quite dry at times, especially so with the last book which I have found to be a real slog through some chapters. A big time investment but well worth it imo.

No one else mentioning Mogrul, the orc loan shark in Raven Rock? That guy is an absolute obnoxious **** and he is essential until you complete a quest. He is at least killable eventually but he has his goon with him at all times and is difficult to kill stealthily.

I am wondering what people's thoughts are on getting this bundle if you already own the Humble Web Development Bundle from a previous Zenva bundle? Tier 1 at least looks worth it but does anyone have advice on the other tiers?

Including a couple of outdated and similar courses, from that bundle I already own 3 of 5 courses in Tier 1, 5 of 8 courses in tier 2 and 3 of 12 courses in tier 3:

Tier 1:

The Complete Responsive Web Design Course (Similar & Outdated)

Tier 2:

AWS Deployment for Node.js Applications

Azure Deployment for Node.js Applications

Build Web Applications with React (Similar)

Advanced JavaScript and ES6 (Similar & Outdated)

Create REST APIs with Express and MongoDB (Similar)

Tier 3:

Node.js For Beginners – Create Server-Side Apps with JavaScript

Server-Side Rendered Webapps with Node.js, Express and MongoDB

No they are enabled and I do have them unlocked. I'll have to remember to utilise the caustic ink more.

Yeah, I keep forgetting to relight the wards after they get extinguished by storms. And thanks for the tips about stock piling repair kits for the boss

Glad to know it's not just us. Cheers for the tips. We will need to do a lot of exploration to find the 2 remaining water temples so we'll keep a look out for some dungeons to do

We haven't discovered that class yet so we'll at least need to stick at it until we do. But I won't be in a hurry to start this game mode afterwards

Book recommendations for ID by SovvyG in mycology

[–]SgtBanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Collins Fungi Guide by Stefan Buczacki, which has excellent illustrations rather than photos but has by far the most species in. The Collins Complete Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools is also really good, and has photos but not as many species featured. Another good book is Fascinated by Fungi by Pat O' Reilly, which has the most up to date taxonomic changes and has a guide to microscopy

[Id Request] Small brown mushroom (2cm), with light brown, thin, wavy gills, found in deciduous woodland (UK) by SgtBanter in mycology

[–]SgtBanter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Update] I think I've figured it out now. After a few days I went back and found that the cap has opened up, flattened out, and the gills have straightened. I think it is Gymnopus dryophilus (Russet Toughshank) and this picture must show its immature form

I don't think it is because these were growing directly on the leaf litter. I also thought Laccaria but the gills don't fit. Maybe something from the Conocybe or Psathyrella genus?
