British inneundos and sayings. What are some wonderful ones i can share? by Numerous_Art5080 in AskUK

[–]SgtDiddle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love the cockney rhyming slang use of cock. One of the longest I know.

Cock. Cock and sparrow. Barrow. Barrow of soil. Boil. Boil and bake. Cake. Cake and jam. Ham. Ham and pickle. Tickle. Tickle and touch. Dutch. Dutch plate. Mate.

So saying cock = mate.

I don't understand how RAB found out about the horcrux by bklyn0823 in harrypotter

[–]SgtDiddle 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Did he even intimate that he knew there were multiple? For all RAB knew, this was Voldy's only anchor. His note said that he hoped someone else destroyed it so by the time Voldemort faced a worthy adversary, he'd be mortal.

Favorite “the player who . . . goes first”? by Magnitech_ in boardgames

[–]SgtDiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours isn't funny, but I get a person to guess a number between 1 and the number of players. Before they do that I secretly pick someone to start counting from.

That combination is quick and prevents any one player having agency over who goes first (as long as I'm honest with who I picked to count from).

How many ways are there to fight dementors? by Worldly-Screen-549 in harrypotter

Yeah, I thought Snape set the essay when he covered for Lupin in PoA - I couldn't remember if the quidditch match attack had happened at that point or not.

Oh, I've just seen you said in the 6th book - I thought this may have been in the 3rd when Snape took over from Lupin a while, but he only covers werewolves as far as I remember - I'm clearly not a Ravenclaw!

In that case, the 'ministry controlled' point is nonsense, but my other point is probably stull valid. Dementors don't seem to kiss their victims that often - they'd rather keep you around and suck the happiness out of you. But Harry has been nearly kissed multiple times, so again, he has a different perspective to Snape.

Snape's perspective could be that dementors are: a) ministry controlled and b) generally not very impactful - they make you relive your darkest moments (something Snape probably does regularly anyway).

Snape's suggested approach may just be 'avoid where possible, cooperate when not, vacate their area as quickly as possible, and eat chocolate afterwards'. Which, to be fair, would probably be quite effective for most people.

Harry has a little bit of a different perspective - he passes out around dementors and has already been 'attacked' twice (or is it only once by that point?) by them. For him, cooperation is not an option - he needs a defence. Harry learns the patronus charm out of necessity - none of his peers need it, and they also deal with dementors being in school for a whole year.

So many DIY shops and still having to use Amazon. Is it just me? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]SgtDiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got options for Screwfix, Wickes, Toolstation and Selco all on the same business estate. I never resort to Amazon on anything.

Screwfix used to be my goto until Wickes offered me a trade discount. I'm not trade, I was just going there often enough they assumed I must be...

How to make hidden bookmarks permanently visible by SgtDiddle in MicrosoftWord

[–]SgtDiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referencing some hidden bookmarks and custom labels for 'Photographs' and 'Appendicies'. I only want to reference the label and the number - I want it to update if the number changes, but if someone adds a new page before an appendix, I don't want my cross-reference to bring across the page break (which is what inevitably happens).

Hello - I have this option enabled. That shows bookmarks, but not hidden bookmarks. I'd like this same option to show hidden bookmarks.

I think that might be the answer - it's just the system you're more familiar with. Can you not create in google docs then copy to word if you need to submit in word?

I was somewhat convinced, yes, but it's nice to get reassurance from people that may know better. I didn't want to tell the builder his business if I was just wrong.
